Using Sunlight to Turn Plastic Into Fuel. #shortsAdded:
Place plastic waste in contact with a light-activated catalyst.
Expose the system to sunlight. The catalyst absorbs light energy and begins breaking chemical bonds inside the plastic.
Carbon and hydrogen compounds are released during the reaction.
Hydrogen gas forms as one of the products. Other outputs can include industrial chemicals and fuel range compounds.
This process is called photo reforming.
Unlike traditional hydrogen production, the reaction operates at relatively low temperatures. Some systems have continued operating for more than 100 hours under stable conditions.
Further processing is still needed to separate and purify the final products.
This is how sunlight can be used to convert plastic waste into fuel and hydrogen.
