Is This Store Empty? Finding Profit in a Struggling Game Shop

[00:00:00]So, we're in Milwaukee, and I figured we go check out this Mega Media Exchange.

[00:00:03]We've been to a couple of their locations in the past, and we've had pretty good luck. So, we're going to go see if we can find anything to flip [music] in here.

[00:00:14]So, basically right now, I'm just kind of like looking through to see what kind of games they have, see if there's things that are kind of like on our buy list, cuz we pay pretty well for a lot of stuff, and we can we tend to be able to find games at stores that either [music] are underpriced or are within our price range, basically. So, it just kind of depends on like where you're looking. I know this one is a RJC exclusive buy list, so if you ever had this game, RJC needs it.

[00:00:40]This place is great, cuz they have some Honestly, they have some like [music] pretty solid prices on stuff.

[00:00:47]But, they also look kind of cleared out.

[00:00:51]Yeah, when they have Biggest Loser faced out, and they have two versions of it, it's not a good sign.

[00:00:58]This store is rough.

[00:01:02]They are Their space is empty.

[00:01:07]Yeah, condition's too rough on this.

[00:01:09]But, they have a lot of titles in here.

[00:01:12]First one I saw is Hunter: Call of the Wild. It's like a really random, expensive hunting game.

[00:01:18]And we'll find out in a second, but I think that one's worth picking up. And honestly, maybe even the Harry Potter, just cuz it's rare. The Harry Potter the Sorcerer's Stone. That game got made like by like six different publishers, but that's the that's the good one.

[00:01:33]That's the one that you actually want.

[00:01:35]That's the expensive one, basically.

[00:01:37]It's not quite with it where we want to be on that. So, I probably won't get it, but there's still some decent titles in here. They're probably like worth looking up. So, another thing that I look for is when they have duplicates. So, when it comes to us listing games on Amazon, these are going to be easier, because it's just you're just typing quantity. I did notice that that's peggy on the front and then one of them definitely has either sun fading or maybe it's a re-printed artwork, but there's several in there so that are within our price range. All right, well I'm going to keep searching for diamonds in the rough.

[00:02:23]We found a stack of these Battlefield games. Interesting thing is that some of them are priced at $5.99 and others are priced at $2.99. Do we have any other prices in there as I can There's actually another one that was I think $6.99.

[00:02:36]So that ones they probably had for the longest and then they dropped it to $5.99 and some of these they'd probably add No.

[00:02:44]They have skew numbers.

[00:02:46]Oh. So it's just like our store. These are actually pretty identical. So the skew on that's 9,800.

[00:02:53]So those are the oldest ones. They've been in the inventory a lot longer so they probably made the price go down. Interesting.

[00:03:02]Which is so I guess it's so interesting.

[00:03:05]So this one I also had for a really long time, but that is also the biggest discrepancy. So I'm not really sure.

[00:03:11]Right. It's interesting.

[00:03:15]Hey, that one's going to be worth picking up a few? Uh I think at the $2.99 mark so I think we're going to snag these. Uh it's not crazy, but it's actually kind of surprising. It's I think like 15 on Amazon so we'll pick these up and see the margin. Yeah. Yeah, that's kind of what we look for. This That's actually a little bit better than what we look for so definitely solid.

[00:03:36]I know Xbox games aren't usually quite as high of a price point, but are you seeing anything good over here so far?

[00:03:41]Uh I found a couple games. Um Percy Jackson's, [music] King Kong on PS2 it's not that good, but on the original Xbox it's a little bit better and then Burnout Revenge.

[00:03:51]>> [music] >> Um some of the Burnouts are decent, some of the Need for Speeds are decent, so that's why I'm looking at this one. A Burnout Revenge is actually a pretty fun title.

[00:03:58]>> Yeah, I actually don't know if I played Revenge. I know I played Paradise.

[00:04:03]>> Like the original one.

[00:04:05]Not quite where we want to be, so we'll put that back and we'll just keep looking.

[00:04:11]>> So, you got a few titles that are kind of within the range you want?

[00:04:14]>> Yep. Uh, MLB The Show 17. [music] This falls like pretty much right in the parameters that we want and we're okay not being [music] right in line with these. It's just kind of like a a benchmark. Uh, if it's outside of these, we just use our discretion. [music] MLB 14 also kind of falls within those, so it looks like there's multiple copies here.

[00:04:38]I'm just going to look over at this real quick cuz if we need to change the case and all that, then it does kind of eat into it a little bit, not a ton, but that case is pretty rough.

[00:04:52]>> Is there anything else that you look for that kind of helps determine what's going to [music] be a good title to maybe grab versus like ones where you're just looking for quantity?

[00:05:00]>> Sometimes, not always, but sometimes we kind of look for games if we just have ever seen them before. If they're ones we've never seen before, then it peaks our curiosity and then we're like, "Okay, this has a potential."

[00:05:12]But also with that, like on Amazon, the rank might be terrible because it's just such a niche and obscure game that people aren't really buying it, they don't know about it.

[00:05:20]>> Does that make sense?

[00:05:21]>> That's one thing to [music] that we're a little worried about when we're looking for kind of weird stuff, but also, I actually just saw this.

[00:05:29]Anniversary editions and like different editions, deluxe, stuff like that. Those can also do really well, [music] so I'm actually going to have camera this one.

[00:05:36]I didn't see it till now.

[00:05:39]>> I have a random insert.

[00:05:41]So, I don't know if you know this. This is actually kind of a disappointing one.

[00:05:45]So, this game is like $17. Do you know the PS5 one's like $65?

[00:05:52]>> Look for short order.

[00:05:53]>> Yeah.

[00:05:54]>> Um >> Yeah, cuz I saw it and I was like, oh, this one's expensive for some reason, but wrong system. So, alas.

[00:06:03]>> So, something that kind of makes this store special is I guess special, then maybe not special, is they tend to do a lot of dupes.

[00:06:11]So, all of these are $1.99 and I think we paid two or $3 each on these. Uh so, we're going to pick them up and then sometimes these are ultimate editions.

[00:06:21]>> Also, can fetch a premium.

[00:06:23]>> Well, that's what I was just going to say is that sometimes the different editions, like anniversary or stuff like that, can be, you know, maybe worth a little bit more.

[00:06:29]>> Yeah, yeah, yeah, I don't know why. It's I guess they have added bonus on the disc, so we pick those up.

[00:06:35]>> Kind of like PlayStation greatest hits, you know.

[00:06:37]>> Exactly. So, we're going to pick those up and then something else I spotted.

[00:06:41]Um We're We need to look at what all's included, but this Persona 4 Golden.

[00:06:47]Um >> [music] >> we actually just had one of these and we sold it literally last weekend for 250.

[00:06:56]So, >> So, that's >> if everything is included, we're going to pick that up as well.

[00:07:00]But yeah, so recently it seems like FIFA's been doing really well for us. It may be because the World Cup's coming up in the US and in Kansas City. So, we've been finding a lot of FIFAs cuz they've been doing really well for us.

[00:07:15]>> This one I don't think is going to be a buy.

[00:07:19]Um probably not, but >> worth checking.

[00:07:23]>> Worth checking and I can look this one up and I think both these Forzas are probably worth looking up as well. This is definitely the better one, but at 25, it's probably not something we want. So, I think both those are a pass, but then we can look up both of these as well. We'll see. Oh, and I guess they have some more over here, too.

[00:07:43]>> Yeah, they >> have a lot of FIFAs.

[00:07:45]>> So, sometimes lesson to learn is if you don't recognize the title, it might actually be worth looking up.

[00:07:50]How much is that one again?

[00:07:51]>> Uh I think that sells for like 30 on Amazon.

[00:07:53]>> Perfect.

[00:07:54]>> know why. I've never seen that cover, so that's the only thing I can think of. Um I would say he's been in the news recently, so uh maybe that bumped up the price. I don't know. I was like, "Hmm."

[00:08:06]>> [laughter] >> Now, one thing interesting that I did notice is that um unlike at our store, um I do see a lot of titles where they've left on like other stickers on the fronts of the of the games where you've got [music] like uh GameStop stickers. Yeah, yeah. So, it's like, "Ooh, hey, that's a little bit confusing." even though it's super faded and you know that that's not actually what the title is or like this one that was like we tried to sell at a garage sale probably and then decided, you know, not to. So, that's interesting, you know.

[00:08:32]>> Yeah, we kind of try to >> We take a lot of pride in the way we sell our games, and so we make sure to clean every game.

[00:08:37]>> Yeah.

[00:08:38]>> Um [music] and that's why we've also buy original cases, as well. So, it's Not everyone does it, but it's something that we really try to take care of.

[00:08:48]>> And that I think makes a big difference.

[00:08:49]>> Yeah, [music] I think it gives a better customer experience. I think literally a con that we were at last weekend, people were complimenting our games for just being so clean.

[00:08:57]>> That's great.

[00:08:58]>> We resurface and replace the case. Uh we try to save the case if we can. We don't want to We don't need more plastic waste, but yeah.

[00:09:05]>> [music] >> Uh sometimes they're just too far gone.

[00:09:08]>> Yeah, yeah.

[00:09:09]>> Like this one. This should not even This should not even be on the shelf. I stick that's all up. So, [music] we do we do our best, and other stores have different ways to do it.

[00:09:20]>> Yeah.

[00:09:20]>> I know. There's another example we've got, you know, it's it's $6.99, but then you got the uh sticker on the top there from GameStop for $8.99. [music] Reduced to $4.49 if you're a Pro member.

[00:09:31]>> So, I think I know the answer on this, but I'm curious to get your take on this. With uh the Xbox Kinect, How popular is that? [music] >> Not at all.

[00:09:42]>> Uh, >> I kind of had a feeling cuz I saw these >> [music] >> and went, "Hey, 99 cents." And you know, you can identify them immediately by the purple casing, of course.

[00:09:50]>> Yeah, so some of the games do decent.

[00:09:53]Uh, season two >> [music] >> does decent for us.

[00:09:57]Um, >> Season two, okay, yeah.

[00:09:59]>> Yeah, so we will probably pick up at least one of those.

[00:10:04]Um, at least two.

[00:10:06]>> Let's go for online anything.

[00:10:07]>> Definitely online.

[00:10:08]>> Online, yeah, cuz that's where your margin is. That's where you make it.

[00:10:10]>> People do not People are not coming into our store looking for Kinect Sports Season 2.

[00:10:16]>> [music] >> Uh, this is definitely like an online type title.

[00:10:18]>> Sure.

[00:10:19]>> So, yeah, Kinects [music] are rough. The cameras themselves, they do sell online pretty much. Like, that's also like >> I don't think we've ever been asked for it in the store. So, and we've been open for over a year, so >> Yeah.

[00:10:32]>> I think that's pretty telling that that's kind of just an online >> online type [music] thing.

[00:10:36]>> All right, so we're finally starting to wind things down here. What do you think we're going to be going home with today?

[00:10:39]>> Uh, let's see. We got four games.

[00:10:43]>> Yeah.

[00:10:45]>> Yeah, that's probably the best one I've found so far.

[00:10:47]>> Nice.

[00:10:48]Well, looks like we've done about all the damage we can here. Time to head to the checkout and call it a day. Let's hear it, Michael. How'd we do?

[00:10:53]>> Okay, so I would say that was definitely successful.

[00:10:57]Uh, I don't know. This is probably 80, 100 games. Uh, and a big [music] thing that we picked up, this is kind of cool, we picked up the Persona 3, 4, Persona 4 Golden uh, special edition.

[00:11:12]Crazy enough, we actually just sold that last weekend. Uh, so we're going to see if we can sell another one again at the con this weekend, [music] but uh, I appreciate you guys for watching. See you later.
