Obesity medications can achieve over 20% weight loss, comparable to bariatric surgery, but results vary significantly among individuals, with approximately 15% showing no benefit and some losing over 100 pounds; the effectiveness cannot be predicted in advance, making trial-and-error the only approach to determine individual response.

| 60-Second Lecture | Lawrence CheskinAdded:
They are remarkably effective, and some people even would say that this is a revolution in our treatment of obesity, because they, on average, we're talking about over 20 percent weight loss—and that’s a magnitude of weight loss that in the past you could only achieve by having your stomach rerouted, your intestines, with bariatric surgery.
There’s not a guaranteed weight loss, nor weight maintenance.
And there's something like 15 percent of people that get essentially no benefit from the medicines.
And it's hard to predict. There may be some genetic markers, but that's in a state of evolution.
There are people who get some slight benefit, and there are other people losing 100 pounds plus that I have cared for.
So you don't know until you try is kind of the bottom line on how effective it's going to be.
