Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway outperformed the S&P 500 over the past decade primarily because of a concentrated 50% investment in Apple stock, which grew approximately 1,200% since Q1 2016, demonstrating that a few exceptional investment decisions can significantly outperform diversified market investments.

Apple Saved Warren BuffettAdded:
On this episode of responding to your YouTube comments, OBS 4744 says, "If it wasn't for his Apple position, Warren Buffett would have massively underperformed compared to the S&P 500."
Uh yeah, I know, this is absolutely [ __ ] true. Since he bought Apple stock back in Q1 of 2016, I believe, the stock's up about 8,000, 1,200%, something in that ballpark. The second best-performing stock that he has is American Express, which I just checked, is up 470%. That is total return, so that's dividends plus the actual stock returns. But, other than that, Warren Buffett hasn't had any sort of high-profile uh investments in the literally the past decade. And so, the reason why Berkshire has outperformed the S&P 500 over the past decade is that they put 50% of the portfolio in Apple.
They made a really massive bet on Apple, and it absolutely paid off. And perhaps that's kind of the brilliance of Warren Buffett is that he often talks about making a handful of really good decisions across your entire career. The fact that he only needed to buy Apple to outperform kind of speaks volumes in of itself.
