Diving into the problem of rural hunger

[00:00:00]Transportation, distance, and an aging population are creating a crisis hiding in plain sight all across our state of Georgia. Streaming this morning on 11 Alive, Dan Kennedy spoke with Feeding Georgia about rural hunger. In case you missed it this morning on 11 Alive, rural hunger can be hard to spot, but it is a growing problem in Georgia. We dug into the why and what's being done about it with the executive director of Feeding Georgia.

[00:00:25]>> Uh food is very expensive right now at the grocery store. Housing costs are up.

[00:00:30]All of that is pressing down on all of our neighbors. Um, and especially in rural areas, that could be more pronounced. If you think about folks living in rural areas, transportation can be an issue. You have the phenomenon of food deserts, meaning it's harder to find a grocery store near where you live. It may be expensive to get to the grocery store. So, we have that convergence of factors that's going on right now. That's hard enough for us, even harder for those sometimes that are living in rural areas.
