Certain foods can trigger or worsen specific skin conditions: dairy (especially low-fat milk) may cause acne through insulin-like growth factor 1 activation; spicy foods containing capsaicin can worsen rosacea by dilating blood vessels; alcohol can exacerbate both rosacea and psoriasis; and GLP-1 medications like Ozempic may cause hair loss due to their catabolic effects on the body.

What to Eat to Keep Your Skin Healthy | The SocialAdded:
So, here to walk us through some of the most common skin conditions and what foods can impact them is dermatologist Renee. Dr. Renee A. Beachch. Welcome back to the show.
>> Uh, okay. Dr. Renee, uh, here's a big question. How important is food to our skin?
>> Yeah, I get asked this all the time by patients. Whenever their skin is reacting, they automatically think, how did I trigger this? What did I eat? And in some cases, we put way too much importance on consumption. And in other cases, you know, the answers are going to surprise you.
>> Okay.
>> Okay. Okay, we ready to put this to the test.
>> So, we're going to go through some scenarios with you. Doctor, audience is also going to help out. We all have paddles and we're going to try to vote whether we think food is having an impact on certain conditions. So, is that fact or I don't know, maybe a little fishy. Okay, so here's our first scenario, everybody. Your coworker swears that his clear skin is thanks to his daily gallon of water and complete elimination of all dairy products. You can't bring yourself to eat cheese-free pizza or skip the ice cream. So fact or fishy dairy, is it a trigger for blemishes and pimples?
>> Oh god, please be fishy. Please be fishy.
>> So it's fact. Sin's got this. It's fact.
Unfortunately, I wish it weren't. So it's even controversial among dermatologists, but people who drink a lot of milk, particularly lowfat or skim milk, are at risk. And the reason why is because there's this thing called insulin like growth factor 1 which gets higher and then it activates another thing called mtorque one which activates androgens. Androgens then make SIBO more oil which unfortunately leads to acne.
So particularly for milk less so for cheese and yogurt.
>> Interesting guys.
>> That's good. That's good. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Okay. So here's the the next scenario. Your son has eczema. It's a skill, itchy condition that affects his arms and legs and can even impact his sleep. He swears it's worse whenever he eats broccoli or any other vegetable from the cabbage family. Fact or fishy?
>> Sounds fishy.
>> Got to be fishy.
>> Okay. Unanimously fishy. Your son can eat his vegetables. We can all eat our vegetables.
>> With this particular condition, there are a lot of concerns, always concerns that food is activating or causing eczema. And I want to say with un unequivocally unless you have actual skin testing with an allergist that indicates that you are to avoid a particular food you can you do not need to have dietary restrictions for eczema.
Yes, people with eczema may have a food um intolerance or they might even get residues of food like a citrus fruit around the mouth that can cause irritation but it is not due to a food allergy.
>> So interesting. Okay, so here's a good one. Let's say this person has you have rosacea and from time to time you have a spicy meal. You like to have a spicy meal and you notice that your redness starts to flare up an hour later.
Clearly spicy food is making your rosacea worse. Is this fact or fishy?
>> I don't know. I don't know.
>> You guys are pretty split. But this is UNFORTUNATELY FACT TOO.
>> WOW.
>> YEAH. So rosacea is a condition where we get flushing and blushing, redness, sometimes bumps that look like pimples too. And spicy food has capsain in it.
Capsain is a chili pepper extract. And so when the body intakes capsain, what does the body do? It tries to cool the skin down. And it does this by widening blood vessels so people look more red.
>> Oh yeah. So it is it is fact.
>> So it is fact. So what about cal caffeine or alcohol? Are they do they impact rosacea?
>> Okay. So caffeine's a tossup. There are people who say with their morning coffee their rosacea gets worse. Now, was that because the coffee is hot? Again, trying to cool the skin down, dilating those blood vessels. We know that caffeine is in skinincare. It's in skin care to constrict those blood vessels so that you don't have redness. Alcohol on the other hand is true. So, alcohol can make rosacea worse, particularly for people who have a type of rosacea where the nose gets bigger um or more bulbous thous.
>> Oh, good to know. Okay, next one. Your best friend recently gave up alcohol and won't even indulge in an occasional glass of wine with you after work. She says she has to be ruthless because it's a trigger for her psoriasis.
Fact or fishy?
>> Oh, >> I just hope everything's fishy.
>> This is fact. This is fact. And you know, a perfect example of this is actually Kim K. So Kim Kardashian does not drink alcohol because she says that it worsens her psoriasis. And the theory behind that is that it could increase these proteins called interlucans. And that they then go on to cascade and make psoriasis worse, especially for men, especially for those who drink more than three glasses a day.
>> OH WOW.
>> IT'S DANDRUFF.
>> OH, I didn't know what psoriasis was.
It's dandruff. You guys can be on the body, right? It can be on the body. It can be on the body also. Yes, it can be on the body.
>> Okay, so uh here's another one. Your aunt went vegan several months ago. She keeps complaining that her shower drain is getting clogged with hair. You feel that it's clearly due to her new diet.
Fact or fiction?
>> This goes to >> It's fact.
>> Fact.
>> You guys are good.
>> So, so the reason why this is fact is because most likely, especially in a North American diet, it's much more difficult to get your sources of protein without, you know, your traditional animal protein. And so she'd have to make a very concerted effort coupled with the fact that she's likely losing blood, which means she's losing iron during her monthly menes. Um, these together can create a scenario where she's better off either upping the dietary iron or taking a daily supplement. So correct.
>> I learned that from you.
>> Is it true that hair loss can be a symptom of taking GPL1s like OMI?
>> Yeah. So GLP-1s, these revolutionary medications that have been so life-changing, Ozmp, WGO, and so on, it puts the body into a catabolic state. So everything's shedding. You're shedding pounds. You're also having less desire to intake food, less nutrients. So what does your body do? Your body says, "Well, we don't need hair anyways. Hair is social. So let's just shed it while we shed our pounds and our weight and OUR FAT."
>> WOW.
>> BUT SO MODIFIABLE.
OKAY. Last one here. While we're talking about skin conditions, there's one that can appear on your neck that you say can be a sign of diabetes. Can you tell us about that?
>> Yes. So this is very important especially for those pre-teen or tween that may be watching or their their parents are watching. It's called aanthosis nigricans and it looks like a dirty neck. So you have a child or pre-teen who comes in and they have this neck change and really what it is is thickening of the skin and why this happens is it's the body's sign of saying that they're no longer as sensitive to insulin. Insulin is a protein that brings our blood sugar down. If our insulin is becoming resistant or our body is becoming resistant, it can be a marker for diabetes and it's really important to get into the doctor, get checked, make the exercise and dietary changes.
>> Wow, Dr. Renee, this was so interesting.
Thank you so much.
>> Wow. Helpful, helpful information. We really appreciate it.
