Rick Rule recommends allocating 10% of a portfolio to gold and silver as a hedge against inflation, explaining that if the US dollar's purchasing power declines by 75%, gold's nominal price would triple, transforming a 10% allocation into 30% and helping offset losses from inflation-eroded bonds and savings.

How Much Gold Should I Own? | Rick RuleAdded:
Uh, I would prefer to see people having, say, 10% of their portfolio in gold and silver.
For some people, more. Let's assume I was wrong. Let's assume, just for a for giggles, that the gold price fell by half. That suggests that over 10 years, you'd be 5% less wealthy. But, let's assume that I was right instead. If I'm right, if the purchasing power of US dollar declines by 75%, it's not illogical that the nominal price of gold, the US dollar price of gold tripled. And that way, 10% of your portfolio becomes 30% of your portfolio. And that 30% of your portfolio might help you overcome the losses that you suffered on your long bonds, because inflation will decimate your long bonds. I want people not to go 100% all in on gold and silver. I want people to consider owning gold and silver as an antidote to the almost certain decline in the purchasing power of their US dollar-based pensions and savings.
