The US government shut down Anthropic's Claude 3.5 (Fable 5) AI model just three days after its public launch on June 9th, marking the first time a government has intervened to remove an AI model from the public market; the government cited concerns about preventing foreign nationals from accessing the model, though the video notes the technical difficulty of verifying user nationality without implementing identification systems, suggesting this may be the beginning of increased government involvement in AI regulation.

the us government just shut down claude's most powerful ai model. three days after it launched
Added:I don't think you realize how big of a deal it is that Claude's latest model just got shut down by the United States government. Just on June 9th, they released their Mythos model, which they called Fable 5, and everyone saw it in their Claude account. This model was very advanced. They had talked about the security concerns before, but they released it to the public thinking that it was ready for wider use. They actually have this Mythos model creating 90% of the code that makes Claude over at Anthropic. But then 3 days later, Anthropic got a call from the United States government giving them 90 minutes to shut this thing off for everybody.
This is the first time the government has intervened on these AI releases and actually yanked something from the public market. Rumor has it Amazon actually escalated their security concerns to the White House, which caused some of this, which is kind of odd because Amazon's actually invested in Anthropic, and because the security concerns they outlaid could actually apply to previous models as well. The reality is there's no clear playbook for this. The government told Anthropic that they couldn't allow Mythos into the hands of any foreign national, but there's no way to tell who's using Claude if they are aren't a foreign national unless they added some sort of identification as a part of you onboarding onto these AI platforms, which seems complicated. We have no idea when Mythos is coming back or what security preventions are going to be rolled out next. We also don't know how the US government is going to get involved with these AI releases in the future. My gut tells me this is just the first of many interventions.
