The Dogon PeopleAdded:
In the central plateau region of Mali, the Dogon people have preserved an ancient culture that is as fascinating as it is mysterious.
The Dogon population numbers between 400,000 and 800,000, and they speak the Dogon languages, which are considered to constitute an independent branch of the Niger-Congo language family.
Their principal area is bisected by the Bandiagara Escarpment, a sandstone cliff of up to 500 m high, stretching about 150 km, and is home to unique wooden sculpture and architecture.
The Dogon are also known for their vibrant religious traditions and mask dances, which are an integral part of their culture.
Historically, Dogon villages were established in the Bandiagara area 1,000 years ago because the people collectively refused to convert to Islam. And today, significant changes have occurred in their social organization and material culture due to tourism.
