This Florida metro is now more expensive than NYC, new data shows

[00:00:00]All right, I know we've talked about this time and time again, but Florida's cost of living is through the roof. You know that if you live here. As more and more people move to the Sunshine State, it's the most popular place. I I get it. That's why we're here.

[00:00:13]>> Yeah, you should want to live here. I understand that, but it seems like housing is more expensive, gas is through the roof. You go to the grocery store, it's really expensive. But the question is, I think when we live here, we think of ourselves in isolation. But how do we compare to the rest of the country? In fact, maybe some of our big cities, could they be as expensive as the biggest cities in the world? That's what our social media guru DJ is exploring today with your comment.

[00:00:42]>> When you think of cost of living, expensive places to live, where do you think of? For a lot of people all over the country, their mind probably jumps to New York City. Now, according to a new report, a major Florida metro is actually now more expensive than New York City. This latest regional price parity report from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, and it found the Miami metro area just surpassed the New York metro area, putting it among the most expensive places to live in the entire country. So, of course, we posted about this on the News 6 Facebook page.

[00:01:13]And we got a lot of interesting comments. Like this one from Beth, who says, "They New Yorked our Florida."

[00:01:18]Ashton says, "It's expensive now to live in the woods of North Florida. I can imagine what it costs to live in a city by the ocean." Jean says, "Too bad the pay has not matched anywhere near it."

[00:01:26]And Eric had a lot to say, but my favorite part is here at the end. "The good news, we can still enjoy the sunsets. They haven't figured out how to put those behind a subscription." [00:02:02]>> Right. I signed up for it and I'm paying the Disney tax. That's what I'm It's I mean, well worth it.

[00:02:08]>> They've always said in certain businesses, you get paid in sunshine in Florida and Orlando, as we see written about a lot in the Orlando Sentinel by Scott Maxwell, one of the lowest paid areas in the country and that happens to be >> They pay a lot of sunshine.

[00:02:27]>> Did you hear that on a couple of interviews when you were interviewing here at first? I I did on on one. I was like, oh, I was warned about this line.

[00:02:34]>> Well, you get paid in sunshine.

[00:02:36]>> Yeah, that sunshine does not buy groceries and that's the reality of it.

[00:02:40]>> businesses try to say that, but uh >> And normally you move here from a smaller place and I I didn't I lived in really small places. I My college town is Columbia, South Carolina. I lived in a place called Casey and I remember my rent was $295 and I had trouble paying that. I was still in college at the time. And then you move here and you think an efficiency is like $2,500 depending on where you're looking. It's crazy.

[00:03:07]>> Yeah, it is hard to find a place it seems for under $2,000 a month, uh no matter what you're renting or or if you're trying to buy a place, it's all >> But I would love those South Carolina prices again for the back of the day.

[00:03:17]>> [laughter] >> Yeah, you're not getting those around here anytime soon.
