This Salon Had No Standards Left | Tabatha Takes OverAdded:
Thank you for calling Salon Deco. This is Kim. Can I help you? Kim, this is Tabitha. Get your keys. Come and meet me outside. And please don't tell your staff that I'm here. Oh my god. I've had cameras in Kim Cron salon all day. And now I'm going to show her what I've seen.
>> Why do you look scared all of a sudden?
>> I don't know. I'm just so shocked to see you here.
>> Well, I'm here and you're backing away from me. So, do you need my help or >> Yes, I do need your help.
>> I have something to show you. So, why don't you come with me? You ready?
>> Yeah, I'm ready.
>> Come on.
>> Tell me what's going on. My business is really, really slow. And I don't know why. When I opened up the salon, I was in it 100%. I was there 5 days a week, open to close. It was fun. And I know it's kind of crazy, but that's why I open up a business. I wanted to have fun at work, and I want everybody else around me to have fun.
>> Okay. So, you opened a business because you wanted to have fun?
>> Yes. Now, it's a struggle because I have two little ones at home. Mom's 5 years old and Devon just 3 years. I don't have a set schedule.
>> How often are you in your business?
>> Um, 3 days a week.
>> And how much of the day do you spend there those 3 days?
>> Wherever I can find the babysitter or however I can figure out my clients. On average, 3 to four hours. There are a lot of women out there that juggle being a business owner and having a family and doing both really, really well.
>> If I could be there 5 days a week, I would be. So, tell me about the finances in your salon. How have you been keeping your salon a float?
>> We borrowed against my husband's 401k and we live off credit cards. And how much have you borrowed against your husband's 401k?
>> About 80 grand.
>> That's a lot. And it has to be really stressful.
>> Yeah, we're forclosing on our house.
That's astonishing to me. And that has to be really hard. But you kind of say it like it's no big deal. Like it's a throwaway.
>> Because I've just already gotten past that point where it's not a big deal.
>> How do you get past foreclosing on your house? I mean, you have a family. You've got two little kids. We bought the house when we were doing really well in the salon. Bottom line. And I just can't afford to keep it all. That sounds like you chose your salon over your house.
>> Yes.
>> Yes, I did.
>> How does your husband feel about it?
>> I mean, he's very supportive of me. Of course, he is. Obviously, he wouldn't be doing this, >> and that's great. But I mean, he's losing his house. And let's face it, it sounds like you've kind of let your business just go to hell in a hand basket.
>> Anyways, >> do you have any idea what happens in your salon when you're not there?
>> Mm- Do you even care? Of course I care.
Well, it doesn't sound like you care. I know cuz it's my misperception that I tend to give out a lot. This is my personality. I mean, this is just how I am. It's like, if your personality is to not care, then you don't care.
Okay. So, let's take a look at what happened in your business today when you weren't there.
>> Look at it. It's empty.
All of it.
>> Please tell me there's one towel in there.
>> No, ma'am.
>> Great. Clients were already coming in and there was literally one towel in the cupboard.
>> I don't know why that's happening.
>> Obviously, it's because you're not there to make sure that it doesn't happen.
Okay. Well, let's take a look at this.
There were like four messages, but they're all from like Friday. Did anyone listen to those?
>> No, don't worry about it. If she doesn't, don't worry about it.
>> That's bad. Clients think I need my head and I'll go somewhere else because no one's calling me back. That's money out of your pocket. It's embarrassing. Seems like many things are embarrassing in your sense.
>> I know, right?
>> I know, right?
>> Let's take a look at this. Do you have somebody coming in right now?
>> Why? Cuz I was going to see if you could shampoo my client up front and just throw a conditioning treat on her.
>> I can't. Sorry.
>> Who was that? Julie. Okay. Julie refused to help one of the stylists when they needed a shampoo because they were running late while she was sitting on her ass in the break room on her cell phone. The staff, they just need to be a more team player. What does that mean? I just want everyone to be adultlike to come in looking good and do your job. It sounds like your philosophy is just let people come do whatever they want to do and it's okay. That's what I'm saying to you. And I when I say it out loud, I know it sounds horrible, but that's just me. I'm very laidback. It's just a really lazy, complacent attitude. I mean, it's ridiculous. I get it. Do you really get it, though? Because you're telling me that this is how you run your business. Um, what do I want to say?
Take a look at this.
So, who was that?
>> That's Brooke.
>> Yeah. Little Well, >> Brooke was flashing her breasts. Do you think that's appropriate?
>> No, that's definitely not appropriate.
>> So, why do you let her get away with it?
>> Take a look at this. Well, I'm trying to tell her what the is going on since she's hadn't been here and she's late and she's like, I just don't have time for this. Whatever. I'm not going to worry about her if she doesn't worry about us. Brooke gave that client an earful, >> right? That's not good >> about how you're never there and you don't care, so why should they care?
>> Anyways, I mean, why do you do that all the time? You just blow it off and you're like, anyways, like, you know, the problems magically disappear. They vaporize.
You say them and then you just >> don't want to deal with them, right?
>> Yeah. You stick your head up your ass.
>> There you go.
>> Let's take a look at this.
>> Where's our boss? Where's Kim? Her client's here.
>> Your client was sitting up front waiting for you.
>> Sometimes I run a little behind.
>> Wow, what a surprise.
>> I know. Obviously, >> you barely work in the salon and now you're telling me that you run a little behind sometimes. It sounds like you're actually not doing anything for your salon at all. Well, that's not true. I mean, I do a little bit of stuff. I just have two kids holding me back. When you say that, you're actually using your kids as an excuse to not to not want to be in there >> and not be in your business.
>> I get it. You've gotten into this position because you haven't stepped up and run your business.
>> I'm just busy all the time.
>> You're too busy for your own business.
>> I don't know how to explain it.
>> It's so mindblowing to me. Okay.
>> You have been foreclosed on. Your husband is blowing through his retirement fund, >> right?
>> You're going to be out on the street with your kids.
>> Anyways, >> I mean, I hope by the end of this week I can try and make you care. So, give me a keys.
I'm taking over.
Come on.
Hello, everyone.
Gather around.
Don't run away from me, Kim.
>> She's here.
>> When Tabitha came in, I I couldn't believe it. I was like in shock.
>> I'm excited that you're here.
>> She's real.
>> I'm Tabitha and I'm taking over. I have canceled all your appointments for the week. And in that week, everything is going to change because you're going to play by my rules. And at the end of the week, some of you may be working here and some of you may not.
But right now, I would like to uh get a tour of this place. Whose station's this?
>> This is Brooks.
>> So, pull out.
>> Yeah, we don't pull out this. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah.
You look like you're scared of hair all of a sudden. I mean, honestly, do you have any idea how dirty is back there?
>> Yeah, you're right. I can see the attitude go through of I don't care.
There you go. You've got cockroaches in the water cooler. Fabulous. See him?
Look here. Who wants a cockroach? Yeah.
>> Well, if you want me to dispose of it, I'll take it.
>> Is it not disgusting to you that >> Yes. At least you put your hand out.
Kim, you're just looking at me. Stand next to me. You have to stop running away from me. It doesn't work for me.
>> Sorry, I'm not running away.
>> Yeah, I think you are running away actually, but I think you might have run away a lot from your business. So, it's time to maybe take a look at it.
>> Kim knows that there's problems in the salon and Kim is unwilling to do anything about it. And these are your business cards, obviously. Salon Deco, the bestkept secret. Why would you want to keep your business a secret? Because people don't really know that we're here.
>> Exactly. That's a really effective marketing campaign. Salon Deco. Sh.
You're the best kept secret. And there could be a reason for that after what I saw today. So, tell me what you guys think is going on in the salon and what's going on with Kim.
>> She doesn't seem to care to. That's the way it comes off. I'm a person who I think attitude reflects leadership and there isn't any leadership. Sometimes I feel like we care about the salon more than Kim does.
>> Do you all feel that way that Kim doesn't care about what the salon you guys?
>> All of the above in my opinion.
>> She wants to not have to run the salon.
I should be able to have my salon and they should make money for me and I should not have to do a damn thing.
>> Wow.
>> Kim told me yesterday that she's not in the salon a lot. Is that correct?
>> Correct.
And she only comes in if she has a client.
>> Yes. Sometimes.
>> What does that mean? Sometimes >> if she only has one client that day and she has a couple the next day, just move them to the next day and I'll just take this day off.
>> Like she don't care. No big deal. Like she's like a little duck.
>> What do you mean a duck?
>> Like the water just roll Like the water just rolls off her back. She's so like she shakes it off, you know.
>> I have to tell you, Brooke, >> you're a little kooky.
>> Kim isn't the only problem in the salon.
Tell me how the teamwork is in this salon.
>> I think it can improve with the team being here all together.
>> I just met Phyllis the other day.
>> Phyllis, how long have you been working here?
>> 3 months.
>> 3 months. That's crazy. If you're never here together, how do you become a team?
>> I think we're just in the mentality of fend for yourself because that's what the leader is wanting us to do.
>> So, it's every man out for himself, >> right?
>> Right.
>> Yes. You're pretty much on your own.
There can be people sitting in the back smoking, eating their lunch, you know, and they'll be hair from the damn shampoo bowls all the way up here.
Nobody wants to do anything about it.
>> Tell me about education in this place.
Do you have any classes?
>> No.
>> That's insane. I mean, Phyllis, you're new to the salon. How do you feel about education?
>> Well, I go to hair shows and I actually teach. So, >> so you're an educator?
>> Yes.
>> Do you think it's crazy Kim isn't providing any education >> or she's not encouraging them to go to hair shows?
>> That's a problem for me because we all need education. We all need to keep going. So, I'm going to bring in some models and I'm going to assess your work.
>> Let's see. I kind of want to measure it to see if you have 8 in. Would you be That doesn't look like 8 in. We're close. Just a little bit close. Do you like the length of her hair? Did you want to go just a tad bit shorter or I'm really confused. Why did you want to measure if your client had 8 in of hair?
>> Because if anybody cuts off their hair, I think they should definitely donate it.
>> Okay. But you need to follow the thought through to your client because it was like you having a conversation inside your head that was actually coming outside.
>> Tabitha's picking on me because I'm the owner. She has to. But I'm not going to think like, "Oh my god, I'm the worst person in the world cuz Tapa said I suck." I don't really care.
I see we're wanting to go brunette today.
>> Drastic, you know, something different.
>> You want to see and walk out of here new and fresh. Okay, we'll get it as close as possible.
>> Thank you.
>> Eat me up.
>> I'm going to beat you up. Can I get you to take your hair band out for me?
Certainly. Thank you very much. So that I can actually see what's going on with the hair.
>> I was always taught not to do that. That you look like you're looking for bugs.
>> There is not a hairdresser on God's green earth that would say you're looking for bugs. I know where I can find the bugs in this salon and it's not in my client's head.
>> My consultations sucked. I'm a bad consultator.
>> You need to become good at doing consultations. It's important.
>> I'm sorry, Tabitha, but I don't like to consultate.
>> Okay.
>> All right.
>> So, tell me what appeals to you about Jennifer's hair.
>> I love the volume, the curls, just everything about that haircut.
>> Well, there's layers, but >> but it doesn't see how it just like >> doesn't move, right? It's like it's here and it's here.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. So, you need a blend between the two. So, there's a flow to your hair, >> right?
>> Okay. I get that. How long have you been hairdressing?
>> Years and years and years and years >> and it shows. You obviously know what you're doing. It was a good consultation.
>> Okay. The reason I'm still in this industry after this many years is because I continue education. This team as stylist, they're not growing and Kim's unwilling to bring in education.
>> So, you want an all over kind of more solid rich color. Are you wanting it to kind of be all one length or you wanting still wanting some movement in there?
>> I still want some movement. I don't want my layers too short.
>> You're asking the right questions.
>> Okay, you can get started.
>> Okay, thank you.
>> Oh, Brooke, were you drinking this roach water?
>> I'm so thirsty. I just >> Yeah. If thating roach water has not killed me yet, my little 8 oz glass is not going to kill me today. T I'm so thirsty.
>> Brooke is almost like a cartoon character. I swear I can almost see the bird circling her head.
>> She sounds so thirsty.
>> Please, ladies, don't serve that water to your clients today.
>> I won't. Okay, >> thank you.
I've noticed several stylists, including Kim, use foil boards to do their highlights. Professional stylists shouldn't be using a foiling board as a crutch, and they certainly shouldn't be getting their clients to pass foils to them. Today, you're not going to use a board.
>> Okay.
>> Okay.
>> So, you're going to get rid of the board >> because grown-up hairdressers don't need to use a board.
>> Okay. I'm bananas.
>> You are. Clients don't have to work.
>> You don't need to use a board.
>> Okay. Well, I'm just saying that's the way I know how to do my highlights.
>> I will teach you how to do highlights without a board.
>> Okay.
>> Okay.
>> So, I'm going to show you. Okay. Okay.
>> And Kim's gone.
>> Do you use a board or no? Cuz she's taking it away from us. Kim, why'd you walk away from me?
>> Oh, I'm sorry. I thought we were done.
>> No.
>> Okay. I'm going to show you how to do a foil without a board. All right. That's what I just told you. And then you just walked away.
>> Okay.
>> Tabitha is the biggest I've ever met.
>> I'll take those from you.
>> I don't think handing foils to a stylist is work.
>> It's tension. So once I have enough tension, it's under.
>> I was only taught how to do foils with a board. So I appreciated the tap that was willing to help.
>> It's just as neat as using a board. Mhm.
>> It's just as close, but there's not that >> client having to work for it.
>> Client having to work for it. It doesn't look professional.
>> It doesn't.
>> Thank you.
>> Did you cross check it?
>> Yes, you did.
It's just been a while since anybody, you know, used crazy terms like cross-checking in the salon. I'm like, "Oh, for real? Oh my god." Yeah, I cross checked.
You need to cross check your work every time. You are slightly longer on this side.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah.
>> Yes.
>> Look, that is not blending through.
>> Right. Right. I want to see what she's doing. I want to learn from her cuz I know I'm a stale ass hairdresser right now.
>> I think the color looks nice.
>> Thank you.
>> Yeah. Do you like it?
>> I love it.
How you feeling right now?
>> It feels much better. Yeah. From the conditioning treatment.
>> I told her I think this is the best haircut I've ever had.
>> I love it.
>> She did a great job.
>> Nice job. I'm glad you like it.
>> I love it.
>> Thank you.
>> See, this isn't layered at all because look, that's not blended. See that point?
>> Mhm.
>> That's why this is falling so heavy.
Maybe my work isn't as good as it used to be cuz I'm in La La Land all the time, but it is what it is. Your haircuts definitely need some work.
>> Yes.
Some of you have really just become lazy and complacent. The problem is that clients see it because clients can tell when it's wow and when it's mediocre.
And wow keeps them coming back.
>> How are you all? Good. Let's go take a look. You ready?
>> Yeah.
>> All right, let's go.
>> I'm super excited.
>> Come on in.
>> Beautiful.
>> Oh, it looks so >> Oh my god, the salon looks amazing. It's just exactly what I was looking for. I love that.
>> So pretty.
>> You will notice over the desk you have a new chandelier and light fixture, which is so great when you first walk in. And behind the desk, you have a brand new booking system by Millennium.
>> I love it. Did we get new business cards?
>> Yes.
>> And it has the new slogan, Dream Team Deco.
>> Because to me, that is much better than the best kept secret.
>> Yes.
>> What I did is the artwork that's on the wall over here that really just gives a pop.
>> Yeah.
>> I've put the artwork on your business card as well. So now you have a motif.
Oh my god.
in here. The color was so drab. What I wanted to do is paint the walls and just make it look lighter. Oh, wow.
>> Sorry. New mirrors with your new mats.
>> Oh, nice.
>> Nice.
>> Oh my god.
>> And a new water cooler.
>> Yay.
>> This one is roach free.
>> Love it.
>> Can I hug you?
>> I don't do hugs. You can't hug me.
>> I freaking love this renovation. The salon looks awesome.
I want you all to be professional today and make sure that you do great hairdressing.
>> Yes, ma'am.
>> And Kim, you need to lead your team. And the way you lead a team is you set the example and you follow it.
>> Clients are on their way in.
>> Thank you.
>> Hi, how are you?
>> Hi.
>> Susan F. Susan for Brooke Shorts.
>> I love the salon. Thank you.
>> You're very welcome. I'm glad you like the changes.
>> I do. I hope it does change.
>> I hope it does change, too. Do you think Kim can change?
>> I hope she can. I would hope that this would make her change. I've seen some changes in Kim. I have. And if Kim actually steps up, I want her to know that like we got her back and we will be there.
>> Let's hope.
>> I know. How are you?
>> Good. How are you?
>> They are out here. And you're here to see >> Julie.
>> Julie. Okay, I'll let them know that you're here. It's a new day. I feel good. And my staff, they're going to be surprised.
I can definitely change.
>> Can I get you anything to drink while you're waiting?
>> Alex, your client's here.
>> Thank you, >> Phyllis. Thanks for doing the laundry.
And if you need me, just grab me. Okay.
>> Okay, I will. Thanks.
>> Thanks.
>> Kim struggles with being a leader. It doesn't come naturally to her, but I can see that she's really trying.
>> Hey girl, I'm just letting you know that if you need anything, just let me know if you could help out with the teamwork.
>> Oh, I'll totally step in when she's processing and things. I don't mind.
>> Right. I know you do.
>> Thank you. My team right now is so motivated and so excited that Tabitha came that I got to keep going with this flow. They're motivated. We got to keep going.
>> Do we have any smokes?
I saw Kim today showing more leadership than I've seen her show in 4 and 1/2 years.
>> Do you want me to check them out?
>> Yeah, if you don't mind. Not at all.
>> I think we got a chance with Kim changing. I really do.
>> Hello.
>> How are we?
>> We're good. You want to >> Don't run away.
>> Okay. I was just backing up.
>> So, would you like me to check it for you?
>> Absolutely. I'd love for you to.
>> There's a little bit, but it's much better.
>> Thank you. Holy, >> Tabitha liked my haircut. That was freaking awesome for me.
I was excited. So, what school district are you guys in? Are you in Cobb County or >> Kim is clearly struggling to balance work and home. So, I decided to bring in a working mom that balances the two every day. Kim. Yes. Mara is a local DJ here in Atlanta and has found the balance of how to be a successful DJ and also raising a family. And it's not easy.
>> But at the end of the day, I think the biggest thing is is that I love what I do so much. So, I think when my son sees that I'm happy, >> it translate into him.
>> I agree. I need to have a balance. I feel like I'm just all over the place and no one's getting 100% of me in a happy me. I'm just like, I got to go do this. I got to take care of the kids. I got to go do this and that and then and I think when you follow your passion, it's going to make you great at everything else.
>> Thank you.
>> I'm going to roll it up, put it on your cart. So, >> great. Thanks, >> teamwork today in the salon.
>> Thank you.
>> You're welcome. People went above and beyond to make sure that every one of us had what we needed.
>> Thank you, sweetheart.
>> That there wasn't hair under someone's station, that every client was greeted.
>> Nice to meet you.
>> Nice to meet you.
>> I think that we did play as a team today.
>> Nice roachree water. It's delightful.
>> And how was doing it without the board?
>> Well, I'm very happy for my first time.
I'm not going to lie. I'm I'm happy for my first time.
>> It's a new technique. So, for the first time, it looks good. This is actually a client that's seen you step up and change, so she doesn't want any more bored either.
>> No, I mean, she loves her hair just the way I did.
>> All right, good.
>> Thank you for calling Deco. This is Julie.
>> It'll be fun not to work alone. I'm telling you, cuz just having people in the salon brings up the energy. Could you check and like because I think I did it the way you told me to and I think I did it good, but will you double check the outside the perimeter to see if it's straight?
>> I'm a good listener.
>> That's a big improvement.
>> Look, both points falling to where they should be. They're even.
>> Well, thank you. Doesn't that make you feel good?
>> Amber has enthusiasm for hairdressing.
She really wanted to learn and she did a good haircut and you did a good job.
>> Thank you.
>> Good.
>> Good to see you.
>> Good to see you, too. Have a great day.
>> Kim, while everyone's finishing up, why don't you and I sit down and discuss my final recommendations. Okay. Okay.
>> Kim made some progress today, but she has to follow through after I'm gone.
And I really need her to understand that she has to be present and active in her salon or she will lose everything. So Kim, how do you think today went?
>> I think they did pretty good. It was a busy day.
>> You told me that ever since you've had your children, the salon really hasn't been a priority, hasn't been a focus, and it's been losing money hand over fist. Yes, that's accurate. The only way that you're going to save your business is if they have a boss here and a leader here directing them and telling them what needs to be done. You're absolutely right. I see that if you truly want to save this place, you will do every single thing that you need to do. I know normally I give recommendations for everyone else.
Today it's all about you.
So you need to have three education classes in this salon, >> a marketing event with some other business in the next week.
>> You need to be in this salon 40 hours a week whether you have clients or not because if you don't show up, this place will close coming up. God, you're like a different woman. I know. I think everyone's shocked.
Good morning.
>> Good morning. I like Tabitha. I'm so excited you're here. I think her hair is right. I think her shoes are awesome.
Okay, I can't talk to you right now because I'm getting too into you. I think she's fabulous. I mean, I would like be your like little kangaroo baby.
Like, I'd probably never leave your side. You'd be like, "Get >> get away."
>> My kangaroo baby. Why kangaroo? Because I'm Australian. NO, I DIDN'T EVEN think about that. You know, I'm like, I want to get all up in the Kool-Aid. You're here to teach. I'm going to watch you.
I like you. I might be getting a restraining order by the end of the day for you, Brooke.
>> She thinks I'm a psycho.
Hey, >> I think I need to keep you away from me.
>> I don't know why you're laughing.
I really feel like over the course of this week, you have truly come together as a team and I can see it. Are you all committed to making this place a great salon?
>> Yeah.
>> So, Kim, tell them what my final recommendations are.
>> She recommended that I'm here 40 hours a week and anybody that's working full-time needs to be here with me.
>> I also recommended three education classes in the next 6 weeks. The hope for all of us is that Kim will take the recommendations that Tabitha made and create a difference in that salon.
>> Kim, I have one last thing for you.
>> Exactly. I knew you couldn't wait to get me out of here.
>> Thank you for everything. I think Tabitha wants to make me be a better boss, and that's exactly what I'm going to do.
You better step up because you never know, I may be back.
>> Good luck, everyone.
>> Thank you.
>> It's been 6 weeks since I was last at Salon Deco, and it took everything I had to try and get through to Kim. It will be interesting to see how the salon's doing today.
>> Oh my god.
Hello.
>> Wow. Excited to see me?
>> Oh, not expected.
>> Hello.
>> Hi.
>> How are you?
>> I'm good, thank you. How is everything?
>> Um, very good.
>> Is it busier?
>> It is busier. It's been a lot busier.
Um, and Kim's here. Kim does come to the salon every day.
>> It's like a new day at Salon Deco.
>> Kim has definitely stepped it up more.
She's here more often. She's definitely a better leader now.
>> Kimmy's paying for education. She had, you know, a company come in and teach classes. She asked me to come in and teach classes. She paid me to teach classes. Here's a shock. You steal my heart. Education.
>> You still think I'm cooky?
>> Yes, I still think you're cookooky.
>> Fantastic. I was hoping your mind wouldn't change.
>> Kim is doing great. She's working more and being the boss and stepping up. The salon is making money now and is nice to not struggle, you know, month to month.
Very less stressed.
>> You actually look less stressed.
>> Thank you.
>> Seriously, you open up my eyes how much I've slacked in the past couple years and it's shown financially. But now that I'm here, I get to know my staff better.
I kept up with what needs to be done, what needs to be cleaned, who needs help. God, you're like a different woman.
>> I know. I think everyone's shocked now.
