[00:00:10]Okay. So the students who are pursuing BCOM BSE BBA any stream under Ismanana University semester 4. This is the unit number two uh lesson Mast Duchess. This one video will be more than enough to cover the full explanation of the lesson. Okay. Easy lesson, simple lesson the like story type only it will have and uh this is the notes which I have prepared. It is available in our telegram group for free of cost.

[00:00:38]Whatever I'm explaining it will be more than enough to write it in the examination. Okay. So my last duchess was written by Robert Browning was a English famous English poet of the Victorian age. Okay. So he was very famous English poet of the Victorian age. He was born on May 7th 1812 in London England. Okay. Browning is best known for his dramatic monologues. His works is mainly deals with the monologues. So he was very famous for knowing his about dramatic monologues.

[00:01:15]Okay. So his poem focus mainly on the human psychology and hidden emotions. So he often write about about power, pride and relationships. So some of his famous works is about the my last duchess, the last ride together and Andrea Delcato.

[00:01:38]Okay. So his style is deep and realistic and sometimes complex also. So he died in 1888 but his works will still widely used widely studied worldwide. Okay. So even though he was not there right now but still his works are still widely studied not only in India in many other countries also his famous uh writings is also getting studied. Okay. This is about the author Robert Browning. So the author of My Last Duchess. Okay. So the summary is about a dramatic monologue speaks to a visitor. Okay. So my last duchess is a dramatic monologue in which a duke speaks to a visitor. Means Duke is a person who is speaking to a visitor. So Duke is a main and a one only character of the uh story. The visitor has come to discuss the Duke's marriage with a new woman. So he was the visitor is coming towards the Duke and talking about and discussing about the Duke's marriage with a new lady, new woman. During the conversation, the Duke shows a plainting of his previous wife called the Duchess. So Duke was already married and he was showing in the middle of the conversation that the first wife painting and her name is Duchess. Okay.

[00:03:03]During the conversation he was shown that the poem slowly reveals the Duke's proud controlling and dangerous personality. Okay. So the poem will slowly reflecting the Duke's personality, Duke's character and Duke's proudestness and the dangerous personality. The Duke begins by pointing to a painting on the wall and says that it is his the last duchess. He says the painting look very real real as if she is still alive. The painting was made by a famous artist named Fra Panloof. The Duke is proud of the painting and likely to show to his visitors. So here what he was saying means at the point of the uh poem the Duke is beginning pointing at the painting that he was saying that this is the last duchess. So the painting is looking very real. No. So it is looking like a real uh being she's like still alive like that it is looking. So [snorts] the p painting is uh made by an artist called Fra Pandos.

[00:04:09]Okay. So he was very p it he was very proud about the painting and it is uh every time he will like to show it to the visitors. However he keeps the painting behind a curtain and only he has the power to show it. Okay. So this shows that he wants full control over others to see his wife. That means it is showing the personality of a dukes. So he wants full control over his wife. How others see his wife as he talks about the duchess. The Duke explains that many people admired her expressions in the painting. Her face shows happiness and warmth. But instead of feeling proud, the Duke becomes jealous and uncomfortable.

[00:04:54]While showing the painting of his wife to the visitors, some of the visitors has uh given a compliments about the painting that her face is looking very happy and the warmth. So the Duke should become happy. No, but the person uh Duke is there. No, he was little bit feeling jealous and uncomfortable with the compliments. He thinks the duchess was too friendly and too easily pleased. She smiled at everyone and enjoyed simple things like nature, gifts and attention from others. Like uh Duchess is there know her his first wife. She was very friendly with each and every person. So she smiled at everyone enjoy the simple things like nature like gifts, small gifts and attention from others like this kind of thing. The Duke feels that his wife does not that did not respect his high status. So what is the duke mentality is he was he is a person who he was like a great person so uh we should have some maintain the uh dignity with others we should not talk like that the personality of the duke he says that 900 years old name should have been valued more than everything else in his mind the duchess treated his great name the same as small ordinary things. This made him feel insulted. So that means uh Duchess is like a simple woman. Okay.

[00:06:19]Who feels very happy for the small things also. So this is what Duke's made him feel insulted. He also says that he did not look like stoop meaning he refused to explain his feelings on correct her behavior directly. Instead of talking to her, he chooses to remain silent and judge her. So whenever the duke is not happy with the duchess statements or award instead of correcting her instead of um talking to her he choose silent only. So he will choose a silent uh he will remain silent and he will judge her like she's uh she will not respect my pride she will not respect my position like that he goes on judging her his pride stopped him from solving the problem in a normal way whatever the proudishness they are having no means the duke is having no so that is stopped him from solving the problems in a normal way they he made the problems in a complicated way then comes The most shocking part of the poem, the Duke says, "I gave commands then all smiles talk together." This line suggests that he ordered the duchess to be killed because he was unhappy with her behavior. So the Duke is saying a statement that I gave commands then all smiles stopped together. This meaning that she was giving a command that to kill the duchess. Okay? because he was unhappy with her behavior. He does not show any guilty or sadness that he his for his wife he was saying to kill. Yes. Instead he talks about in a calm and controlled way which makes him seems cool and uh cold and cruel. Okay. If you are unhappy with your partner, you can sit together and you can talk with her. You can talk discuss the situation. But he was making the cruel mentality. Yes. After this, Duke moves moves the conversation backs to business. He thanks he sorry he talks about his next marriage and the dowy he was expecting. So he was unhappy with the duchess and he made a statement to kill her and he was talking about the another marriage and he was talking about the dowy also how much he will get it. He is expecting. This shows that how he treats marriage like a deal or a transaction uh rather than a relationship. Yes or no? So this is the this shows the complete character complete behavior of the dukes. Yes. So at the end he points to another piece of art a statue of Neptune taming a seahorse. This is symbolic like just like Neptune controls the seahorse, the Duke wants to control everything in his life, especially his wife. So this is the complete arrogance and the pride and selfishness and the psychotic nature of the Duke. In conclusion, My Last Duchess is a powerful poem about pride, jealousy, and control. It shows how much to go, how much it shows how too much ego and possessive can destroy a relationships. Yes, the Duke characters warns us about the danger of arrogance and lack of respect for each other in any kind of thing either it might be relations and it might be anything. So it shows the complete lack of respect and danger of arrogance and pride of the dukes. Okay. So this is about the my last duchess lesson. Clear? So this is the dramatic monologue. Okay.
