Life in 110 Degrees: How This Couple Survives Being on the HOT Phoenix StreetsAdded:
All right, y'all. Um, first and foremost, I want to say thank you. You know, I really appreciate y'all sitting here doing this street interview with me. Um, I haven't had a chance to meet you guys.
So, we're going to start from the beginning. All right.
What is your name, age, and current living situation?
>> Uh, my name's my name is Rudy.
>> What was it again?
>> My name is Rudy.
>> Rudy.
>> I'm 23 years old, and I mean, we just out here really basically homeless. But >> what about you, man?
>> My girl, Me and my girl really don't like to say that, you know what I mean?
We out here really just living trying to >> just thugging.
>> Yeah. I mean, sort of in a way, but we just we just trying to, you know what I mean?
be like basically like >> keep our faith up. You know what I mean?
>> We got to My name is Oelia. I'm 25.
>> Um like I've been like this for like at least three about 3 months. I've been >> Yeah. I've been incarceration, you know, in and out. I just got so tired of it, you know.
>> Yeah. Um me and my boy right here like we we like we've been like praying every morning, you know what I mean? Not forgetting, you know, who we are, you know, not letting the streets get the best of us.
>> Yeah.
>> And you know, keep each other's faith up, you know, no matter what the day brings, you know, we just, you know, we don't hope for the better cuz we are the better, you know.
>> Man, that's amazing to hear. You know what I mean? that both of you guys kind of stick together um you know and help each other and and have each other's back. You know, I hear a lot of stories on a day-to-day basis of the trial and tribulations that a woman go you know what a woman goes through being out here by herself.
>> Can you elaborate on some of those troubles and um and tell me, you know, what's better for you? Is it better you being out here by yourself or having a woman and vice versa?
True. I I really I really think that um I think it's a little easy. Not a little easier, but you know, like in a way it's kind of easier when you have somebody, you know, cuz being out here alone, it's just I feel like I mean, it's hard. You I mean, it's a struggle. I mean, but it's a struggle even when you when you have your you have your person, but you mean I'm just we're just blessed to have each other at the end of the day, you know? Man, that's that's cool to see, man. Two people together and happy no matter what situation they're going through. I think that's that says a lot about your guys' character, you know.
What about you, man? Like, h how do you feel about having a significant other being out here with you? And and what was it like uh without anybody, if you ever were out here without anybody? Wow.
Sharing these kind of stories with a a man like you and having a man on my side is just um it's much greater than being by yourself, you know. Um it kind of opens up my temple, you know, like knowing that I'm a vessel, you know. Um I I I at least bring glory and and love into our our relationship, you know.
It's it's much better than to have somebody by your side than to live alone, you know. Man, I agree with you guys. Man, that's true. That's true. Um, can you elaborate if it's true that some of the women go through what I hear they go through? Like, like, you know, men being nasty, always trying to talk to them, hit on them, trying to make them do illicit things for, you know, certain things and stuff like that.
>> Well, it's like that game play, it all comes natural. You know what I mean?
growing older and becoming wiser as a woman, you know, you don't just hold yourself and realize that you are growing, you know, to me, ass wise or breast wise, you know, um, you just wake up to to the the fruit of the wound, you know what I mean? It's going to it's going to be itself. You know what I'm saying? You know, whether men are nasty or women are nasty, you know what I mean? There it all comes in a way of living the life. You know what I mean?
Like me, I want to have kids someday, you know? Not that I didn't or do, but you know, hey, whatever is nasty is nasty. You know what I mean? As long as, you know, I realize that what I'm doing, you know what I mean? At that moment of time, >> man, that's that's amazing that you consider your you guys self as a vessel for the Lord. You know, a lot of people kind of lose sight of dealing with God when they're in a a bad situation. they kind of, you know, get mad at God and curse and say bad things about God. But the fact that, you know, you're still strong, uh, you know, in Lord is is is a big thing. I think that's a a strong commitment, you know. Shout out to you guys. Um, can you tell me what it was like before you guys were ever on the streets? Did you guys have a good life growing up?
Well, uh, my parents never never really stopped to talk to us about, you know, being on our own and, you know, not taking care of the house or apartment at the time. You know, we lived under the roof of their, you know, their salvation. And you know I always you know pray for my salvation and my soulmate salvation to be strong and healthy you know and to live you know with the blessings that we do have you know and yes ma'am >> before 6:00 comes you know that'll be the end of the meal you know >> and us glorified our little world inside you know um it will come out greater than what what other people's struggles were you know >> wow that's heavy heavy. Very deep. What about you, homie?
>> Um, growing up it was, um, it was all right. You know, mom, she she uh she adopted me when I was a newborn, so you know what I mean? She she had that struggle, you know, I mean, cuz she wasn't expecting a kid or nothing, but she did she wanted a kid, so she adopted me, but she had cancer, so she had to go through that, too, when I was when I was just young. And um, but she she made it happen. My mom was cool. people, >> man. Shout out to your mom. You know what I mean?
>> For sure. And um but she ended up passing away.
>> I'm sorry to hear that, homie.
>> When I was like 16 years old, so that's pretty much when I really became homeless out here on the streets.
>> Yeah.
>> And you know, [ __ ] got real, you know, cuz you know I mean that was really she was really all I had, you know.
>> Yeah.
>> A lot of other family there like that, you know. So I had my mom and when I lost her just you mean everything went really really bad.
>> Things kind of went downhill. Would you say like you said that was the point of when the point of no return?
>> Yeah, >> man. I'm sorry to hear that again, man.
>> Yeah, man. I just try to keep my head up. All right. You know what I mean? You know, I'm out here, but >> trying to I'm trying to get through it for sure. Slowly but surely.
>> Yeah. Yes, sir. I agree. Make >> our way.
>> Um, >> what's the biggest uh challenge you've guys experienced while experiencing homelessness?
the hoodas when the cops come around, you know, and how they try to pull us away from each other.
>> That's something that breaks >> everybody's heart, you know what I mean?
And it breaks not just mine or his, but >> like it all comes into reality, you know what I mean? What what lie a man have or what lie a woman or a man has in their day, you know what I mean? are um what truth a woman or men hold, you know what I mean? To get in and out the day, you know what I mean?
>> Yeah.
>> Wow. Yeah, definitely powerful words from you. Um Yeah. Do people bother you guys a lot out here? How do these shops uh treat you guys? Do they let you get water? You know, cuz we're in Arizona, you know, they had that's usually a law.
I don't know if it still is, but it once was. I mean, some some shops they they'll they'll they'll [ __ ] with us sometimes, but some of them be at your ear. They don't even want to help sell some ice or anything like that. You know, it's hot as hell and they run you out. They tell you you can't be here.
You know what I mean?
>> Yeah, that's just trying to catch some shade, you know? It's hot as hell. You just trying to catch some shade most of the time and then they just Yeah, you can't be here. You know what I mean? So, yeah.
>> Yeah, that's horrible, man. Um Yeah. Uh it's sad that you know you can't even go to a park no more and have a picnic, take your shoes off and relax without worrying about getting a citation.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> You know what I mean? That's true, right?
>> And and I remember back in the day you could you could go and have a picnic.
>> Yeah.
>> And uh you know that's what the parks were for when you you've been walking so long.
>> You know you could just rest up a bit, you know, use the restroom, wash your hands, get a drink of water. Nowadays, they give you a citation or throw you in jail. And I just don't think it's right.
>> Yeah.
>> And that's why I do what I do, man. Um, what is the hardest part of your day-to-day routine for you guys?
Oh, >> living up to our standards and >> being um whether you're drug free or you know whether you know you're looking for the day that you once had, you know what I mean?
>> Yeah, that was heavy. Living up to your standards. I haven't heard a lot of people say that out here.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh that was deep though.
>> What about you? Same thing.
>> So, I say trying to, like you said, trying to find some water is [ __ ] [ __ ] That'd be hard.
>> Wow.
Just find some [ __ ] water, >> man. That's crazy when you can't even >> someone just wants water, man.
>> Well, water's been a hot water's a hot commodity.
>> Yeah, for sure.
>> What's the world come to, man? That's crazy. Um, what what is the most dangerous or scariest thing about being out here, if there's anything at all?
Dangerous. Scary. Uh, yeah, for sure. Probably like the cops, too. That's scary. That's cuz sometimes you don't know what's going on or what who you're around or something, you know? They might It's scary just being out here. Being out here in Denver, >> they just run up. Huh?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. That's crazy. Um, what are your guys' short-term goal for the next month?
>> Uh, you probably get a phone, >> huh?
>> Get a phone.
>> Heck yeah. Why is a phone such a big thing, man, out here? People steal them.
It's one thing I I never understand, man. Why somebody who's in the same situation as you guys would, you know, would steal from you guys, you know? I don't get that. And then they take something that's hard to get like a phone or or like your credentials, like your ID, your social security.
>> I don't get it. They know that stuff takes like a whole day trip to get.
>> You got to go all the way downtown, then we got to pull the number, >> you know, wait an hour, you know, >> and I just think it's it's awful, you know, when on the flip side of that, the homeless community is um I don't know.
It seems so good. Like it seems like people like to help each other, do things for each other, but then on the other side of that, they'll steal from you and help you look for it. So, >> I just never understood it.
>> Um, what does the word home mean to you guys?
>> Um, probably just like uh our our time together, you know, really.
>> Oh, that's heavy, man. That's cool.
>> Are home right now.
>> Yeah. Respect to you, man. That's cool.
You know, time together. Yeah, that's awesome to hear when couples are, you know, into each other like that, man.
That that's that's that's cool. Um, what would you guys say to somebody who's headed down a similar path?
Um, I would say just keep your head up and don't don't let the struggles that you face define you. And you know what I mean? Just don't, you know, I mean, don't look, you know, don't like dwell on your past. You know, everybody makes mistakes every day. You know, just got to be able to look past that and look forward to, you know, I mean, better days.
>> Man, you guys are smart. You guys are very sharp. That's cool. Um, what about you? Same thing or >> I just look up to the man that I have throughout my day and be thankful and glad that me and him shared our stories, you know.
>> Cops are behind us.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. They're in the alley. Don't worry, you know, >> being um by ourselves, you know.
>> Yeah.
>> Um it's just almost like trials trial and tribulations, you know what I mean?
You don't want to give yourself away too much, you know?
want to be in connection, you know what I mean, with your loved one or, you know, the one you have next to you.
>> They kept going.
>> Yep. You good?
>> They did come back.
>> Yeah. When we're doing, you know, good.
Um, what would you say are the biggest barriers preventing you guys from getting like a roof over your head, a house, or stability? Would you say it's financial?
>> Yeah. Yeah, most definitely. Probably right now. Yeah.
>> Okay.
>> Financial and uh transportation.
>> Transportation. Yeah, for sure.
>> Because getting to work and, you know, having your 8 hours, you know what I mean? Being separated or alone, you know what I mean? You want them to be the best, you know what I mean? And you want your loved one that is on your side, you know? You want him to do right, you know what I mean? Whether he's as a child of God, you know what I mean? As a child of yourself, you know what I mean? you'll want uh to behave, you know what I mean, the right way.
>> Man, I agree with you. Um, what would you want someone who stumbles across this video to understand about you guys?
>> That is true love. And um, >> that's cool, man. It's a world with, you know, it's a world by yourself, but the world that you live in is, you know, faithful enough to carry you on to that next step, you know, >> 100%. I agree. And and um last but not least, I told you guys, man, didn't want to keep you too long. That was a definitely an awesome interview. I really appreciate you guys. But I got to ask, do you guys have a cash app, Vinmo, or PayPal? Because you never know, man.
Someone might see this and might want to help you out. They might be empathetic to your situation, understand what you guys are going through. Not saying that a guarantee, but you never know. They might feel like helping you guys out. If so, you can shout it out.
>> Yeah, we we I don't I don't know. You have one. We don't have We don't have a phone right now. We're trying to get in our our, you know, get a phone and, you know, >> Yeah. I'm going to give you a card, man.
And, uh, if you do get one, just, uh, email it and then I'll put it up there for you.
>> But, like I tell everybody, man, if I see you guys again, I would love to get an update, man. Um, >> I don't just want to catch you guys while you're while you're down bad. I would love to catch you guys while you're elevating and doing good, man.
>> And so, this, you know what I mean? I don't want this to be the last sight, you know? Yep.
>> Um and whatever it is you're doing, if I see you again, I would love to get an update, man.
>> Sure.
>> All right, man. I appreciate you guys.
Thank you so much. That was a wonderful interview, man. I really appreciate it.
You guys have a good day. Y Thanks everyone.
