The 1988 Morris Worm, which infected 10% of internet-connected machines within hours, was not created by a malicious hacker but by Robert Morris, a Cornell graduate student who released it to measure the internet's size; this incident demonstrates that even well-intentioned experiments can cause widespread disruption, and it was inspired by John Brunner's 1975 cyberpunk novel 'The Shockwave Rider' which featured a hacker protagonist modeled after a tapeworm parasite that propagates without causing damage.
