While praise initially brings happiness, attachment to it creates a subtle trap where the mind becomes dependent on external validation for inner peace; true freedom comes from acting with wisdom and sincerity rather than seeking approval, as illustrated by the Buddha's teaching that one should remain steady in both praise and blame like an unmoved mountain.

How Praise Quietly Becomes a Form of Attachment追加:
Praise can feel warm and comforting, much like sitting beside a fire on a cold evening. At first, it simply brings happiness. But if a person becomes too attached to praise, the mind slowly begins to depend on it for peace. In many Buddhist sutras, the Buddha warned disciples about this subtle trap. A monk may begin meditating not for understanding, but for admiration from others.
A teacher may speak kindly, yet secretly hope to be called wise. In this way, praise quietly changes from a pleasant sound into a hidden chain. The danger is not the praise itself, but the mind clinging to it. Imagine a clear lake reflecting the moon. When the water is calm, the reflection appears naturally. But if someone constantly throws stones into the lake hoping for a better reflection, the water becomes disturbed. Praise works in a similar way.
When a person acts with sincerity, respect from others may arise naturally. But when the mind starts chasing approval, inner calm becomes disturbed. A person begins to fear criticism, ignore honest feedback, and shape their behavior only to remain admired. Even a kind action can lose purity if it is done mainly to protect one’s image. The Buddha often encouraged disciples to remain steady in both praise and blame, just as a mountain remains unmoved by changing winds.
This teaching does not mean one must reject appreciation or become cold toward others.
Instead, it means understanding that praise is temporary, changing from day to day like weather in the sky. One day people may celebrate you, and another day they may misunderstand you. If peace depends on public approval, the heart will constantly rise and fall. But when a person learns to act from wisdom rather than applause, there is a quieter freedom.
It is like a candle that continues to give light whether someone notices it or not.
