[00:00:05]It may have been their own distant ancient ancestors. This is Teotihuacan.

[00:00:13]Around 500 AD, somewhere between 125,000 and 200,000 people lived here. One of the biggest cities on Earth at the time.

[00:00:24]When the Aztecs arrived centuries later, it was completely empty.

[00:00:32]No records.

[00:00:35]Nothing that told them who had been here. Archaeologists kept finding symbols on temple walls, on pottery, on everyday objects. For a long time, the assumption was that it had to be a writing system.

[00:00:50]But nobody could read it. Turns out, they were looking at the wrong language family entirely.

[00:00:58]In 2025, two language experts from the University of Copenhagen tried something different.

[00:01:05]They reconstructed an ancient Proto-Uto-Aztecan language. Basically, the deep ancestor of Nahuatl, the language the Aztecs actually spoke. And matched it to the symbols.

[00:01:17]And the signs lined up.

[00:01:20]They may have recorded speech. They may have named real people.

[00:01:25]Nobody's calling it settled yet. But if they're right, this changes a lot.

[00:01:31]Here's what gets you. If this theory holds, the Aztecs didn't wander into some foreign abandoned city.

[00:01:44]A civilization so old, so far back that they had completely lost the memory of it. And under those pyramids, inside a tunnel that was sealed for nearly 2,000 years, archaeologists found something nobody saw coming.
