When landing on toes with excessive plantar flexion, the knee can hyperextend, causing a bone bruise (blood trapped under the bone) rather than an ACL tear; this injury requires the RICE method (rest, ice, compression, elevation) for recovery, with moderate cases healing in 4-8 weeks and severe cases taking 4-12 months.

Anatomy with sports injuries ep 108: Anthony Edwards #nba #nbaplayoffs #basketball #sports #injuryAñadido:
If you're anything like me, like learning anatomy through sports injuries, this episode 108, and this is Anthony Edwards, April 25th, 2026, first round of the NBA playoffs. Timberwolves Nuggets. Ant goes up and try to block this shot. He comes down hard on that left leg and he's down and in some pain.
Rudy Go looks like he's just going to pass the ball in, but Anthony Edwards is still down and writhing on the ground.
And that's not good if you were Anthony Edwards. So, we have a second angle of it. We're going to watch it twice and analyze it the second time. So, as he goes up to block the shot, first of all, head almost hits the rim going backwards. freak athlete Anthony Edwards is uh his left knee hyperextends as he lands. So as we pause here once he comes down his uh toes land first. So you see his toes land, his body is kind of in front of him. His heel comes down hard and his left knee hyperextends uh and instantly he's in some pain. So he doesn't really weightbear. He's helped by the training staff off of the court.
But what is involved here for Anthony Edwards? Well, the mechanism of injury is a knee hyperextension. He lands on his toes which causes hyperextension.
We're not going to get into like vectors and stuff but if you are familiar with prostesis like prosthetic limbs if there's excessive plantar flexion once your foot touches the ground that causes knee hyperextension and the other way around if there's excessive dorsif flexion there's there's knee flexion but the diagnosis is a bone bruise which is blood trapped under the bone. It's just similar to like any other bruise you might see. It's purple uh purple discoloration, but this is in the bone here. So, as we look at it, bone bruise at the knee, of course, which is the femur and the tibia. And here you see just blood pooling underneath the condile. So, what else could have happened? It could have been an ACL tear. Uh as we look at Ant here, I think it's really because his body was like out in front and his knee couldn't hyper extend any more than what it did. So, it's not like a super severe hyperextension. It is hyperextension by definition, but not really enough for a tear. So immediate action. Uh they assisted him off the court with partial weight bearing, nonweightbearing, really medical management. X-ray and MRI.
X-rays cannot see a bone bruise, but they likely would have done an X-ray to see if there was like a tibial plateau fracture or something like that. Um rehab progression is rice. It's the Rice method, which is rest, ice, compression, and elevate. You really don't want to do anything with a bone bruise. You can't really do much to be honest. So he's just resting at this point. Prognosis is to be announced, right? So if it's a moderate, it's four to eight weeks. And if it's a severe bone bruise, it could be 4 to 12 months. So his playoff return is in question nonetheless.
