This incident exposes the hollow promise of meritocracy, where a Black man’s success is treated as a suspicious anomaly rather than a legitimate reality. It proves that institutional racism doesn't just ignore achievement; it actively criminalizes it.

Black Man Proves White American Is Intimidated Black SuccessAdded:
You understand, people don't want people coming in and out of the bank. That's an issue, right?
You understand. They don't even They don't They They don't They don't even They don't They Their employees don't even They can't even afford what I have.
So, how would I look like I'm trying to rob somebody?
>> got that so expensive? I'm just curious.
What do you do for a living? Why you got so expensive? And my question is, who needs an enemy when you have racist white people that can racially profile you?
That's all you need, baby, in the United States of America. Most especially, if you're a black, young, successful man who has money.
Aw, look at that headline. Softening supremacy culture. Ryan Coogler wasn't mistaken for a bank robber. Ryan Coogler was treated like a bank robber. Ryan Coogler was criminalized. A person from the bank called the police, suggested what he was doing was illegal, and he was detained and handcuffed. I'm sure many black people have the experience of being treated like a criminal in the United States. No amount of wealth, power, fame, access to predominantly white institution can protect us from being criminalized. It is the constant state of being black in the United States, because that's how what the country works on. We got rid of slavery.
We made slavery illegal except for when in the Constitution, except for when you criminalize someone, and then you're allowed to enslave them and profit from them. And unfortunately, it's not only white people who enforce the systems of supremacy culture. If they called and concerned that you're just sitting here and not really doing anything. I got I'm sorry. I got to get this on video. The bank called The bank called and said that they're concerned that I'm sitting here waiting for them to open up. Yes, sir. That's crazy.
Tampa is out of control, man.
But there's another guy sitting >> Are you Are you doing business here?
Hell, yes, I'm doing This is my bank.
Okay, are you going to go inside? Yeah, as is the they open? They open up at 9:00.
I can't believe they called you for real. It's very good.
That's crazy, man.
That's crazy. So, you're just waiting for the bank to open?
>> Hell, yes. I got two too much stuff to do at the bank.
Too much stuff to do.
Place of business.
All right. That's crazy though. They called you over here.
>> you had alcohol and whatever. So, I don't know if they saw your Red Bull as your alcohol. I don't know.
Well, you got to understand that the bank and people hanging out in the bank parking lot makes them a little nervous.
Makes them nervous. A person is out here waiting for the bank to open at 9:00.
>> Well, you got to understand people walk people coming in and out of the bank.
So, that's an issue, right?
You understand. They don't even they they they don't they don't even they don't they the employees don't even they can't even afford what I have.
So, how would I look like I'm trying to rob somebody?
>> that so expensive. I'm just curious.
What do you do for a living and you got so expensive? I'm a Airbnb owner. An Airbnb owner?
>> Yes, that's right.
Right, but they don't even drive the cars that >> owner? They don't they don't a lot of them. They don't even drive the car.
They don't even live. So, why would I look like I'm doing something wrong? Cuz you're the only one sitting in the parking lot in the parking lot.
>> there's a guy right there sitting in the front.
Right there. He's been waiting with me.
Well, I didn't see I can't see him from here, but I just >> blue Tesla. That's all they said. Right.
Come on, like and I got this is my bank.
This is the only bank I come to to do like and I'm coming to withdraw a lot of money. All right. That's crazy though. I couldn't believe it.
>> They were just concerned. That's why When I seen them walk by the first time, I was like Who walked by? When the employees cuz they are these are all their cars and they were just coming by and they were like kind of looking like what what is the black guy doing sitting here in front of the bank? You think I'm casing the bank out?
>> nothing to do with race. I'm absolutely >> sitting in the parking lot. I'm from I'm I'm Atlanta originally, so So, what what does that >> When I came to Tampa and I seen like just how it's different. What's different about it? There's just a lot of prejudice.
Okay. Yeah.
All right. Yeah.
All right, bud. Yeah, no problem, man. I appreciate Let them know. Yeah, let them know that I'm coming in to make a deposit, uh withdrawal, a big withdrawal.
That's crazy.
You know what I'm understanding at this point? Maybe some people are not used to seeing black people with money.
Matter of fact, I think >> [snorts] >> some people are just not used to seeing black men with money. Yeah.
And also also also, I really do believe that in this community they have a prejudice of like when a black man has money, he has to be flashy.
Oh, he should be wearing chains. Oh, he should pull up in a Rolls-Royce. Oh, you understand? So, I feel like these people are not used to black men that have money and [clears throat] their richness is just silent. Their money is not shouting. They're not out here to flaunt it in the streets.
You understand what I mean? No, because how do you tell me as a bank this is your customer.
This is your customer that you're racially profiling as a thief.
Make it make sense. How do you even start?
The man who directed the movie Black Panther was arrested for robbing a bank.
But, he did not rob a bank.
He simply went to make a withdrawal.
He's obviously a multimillionaire.
And the bank teller thought he was trying to rob the place.
My glasses off my face. Take your glasses off. Take your time. I got you.
You need some air?
I mean, I I I got to be honest with you, man. I just I just can't believe this, man. Is that my that my Is that my family? Baby nurse, do you have her at the bank right now? Who?
The baby nurse that flipped me over when I was in the backseat. Do you have her at the bank right now? Yes. She's a medical attendant. All right. All right.
Can you Did the officers explain what's going on while we're out here? Not really, man.
All right. So, we got a call based I heard I heard somebody ask me if I passed a note. Yeah. It's probably the one that you did.
So, basically, we got a call and from what we got the call, it seemed like someone was trying to rob the bank.
Uh something about you passing a note to a teller or something to that effect. Uh can you just tell me what's going on or Here, bro.
It's a It's a It's a medical assistant that works in my house that prefers me paying in cash.
Every time I make a withdrawal to pay her, you know, because it's a a large amount and she works a lot. Yeah.
You know, if I if I don't if I don't write down on a note how much I want out and then I don't want it ran through the money counter right there at the desk, the whole bank ends up looking at it cuz they just hear money going through the money through the account. And I don't feel safe. I don't feel safe getting money out like that. So, every time I go to withdraw it, you know, I I put that I put the amount the account I want to take it all out.
Got you. I put my own card in and then they and then they usually take me out like always just just get the get the money from me. You know what I'm saying? Got you.
I I I don't understand >> So, you you make you make Well, that's like I said, that's the reason why we're out here and that's the reason why we detained everybody because we didn't know exactly what was going on.
So, you make the >> but but I mean, I got to be honest with you, man. Y'all never like y'all never asked me what was going on. Yeah, well, unfortunately, we in in those situations in the situation Where's your ID? In this pocket.
In this Is your ID in this pocket?
Just hang tight. Help. One more second.
One more second. One more second. Sir, so the reason that we don't Give me a second, man. I got All right.
Do you need to get some fresh air? Do you need to take the mask off for a second to get some fresh air? I I Okay.
I got to find my dog, baby at home right now. I don't want to take my mask off, bro. Yeah, yeah. I understand.
I'm just trying to manage my emotions right now, bro.
>> I understand. So, like I was I was about to tell you, the reason we don't come out and and and unfortunately, the the seriousness of the call doesn't allow us to Officer, let me ask you a question, sir. Yes, sir. You're talking to me right now and I'm cuffed in the back of the car.
Yeah. My team's driver is cuffed. I'm imagining the back of a car.
>> Yeah.
And and and and and my baby nurse that takes care of my baby is cuffed in the back of the car. Yeah. Is there any reason we can't have this conversation once you get cuffs off everybody? You know what Yeah. I mean I mean back to being treated like Yeah, yeah. kind of nervous. Yeah.
Is there a reason for that, bro? Yeah, that's fine. We'll we'll go ahead and get you out of the handcuffs and get the I I'd rather have this conversation with you, man, but this is this is >> I understand.
We We just I I while they're getting you guys out of handcuffs Hold on for um I I I >> [laughter] >> I I I stated to the officers that arrested me that had that had their blocks out.
Yeah.
That I was putting money on my own account. I understand. I I put the I put my own bank card in here before they let you in the back. You know what I'm saying? So we have to confirm that. You got to understand, we can't We don't come out because of the seriousness of the call, we don't just come out and unfortunately in a situation like that, you don't get the benefit of the doubt. We detain and then we ask questions later.
Um that's what exactly what I went inside for. Uh you can you can take them out the other people that are handcuffed. There you go, guys. Um So, that's why we come out with weapons.
That's why you're detained and then we ask questions later because of the nature of the call.
So, um It's locked.
Say it again, sir.
Um It's It's nothing It's nothing It's nothing for me to say, man.
I I got to get all y'all names. Yeah, yeah, fine. That's fine. Yeah, yeah.
That's not a problem.
Um >> Y'all got cars? No, we don't have cars, but we'll If you If you got something to write on, um do you have anything?
All right.
We'll We'll get you something then give you everybody's names on it.
Hey, she can You you They can have a seat in the car.
Yeah, she can go back.
Oh, you have the keys then? Okay, you can give her the keys.
Yeah.
Do you understand that we're not We didn't just show up here and put draw guns on you.
We showed up because a call was came in.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Hey, y'all Y'all doing fine. Give it Write down all our names and put it on a paper for them.
He don't have nothing to write on.
Just put all of us.
You know what I'm saying?
You know what I'm saying? Just step off.
You know what I'm saying? Just step off.
Just step off.
He's They're writing all your all our names down. You know what I'm saying? I need to find out who made that call in here. Yeah, you know what Keep on the bank.
I need to I need to find out who made the call.
Yeah, I got I got But I just want you to understand what what what what my sergeant advised you on the nature of the call. Just the call I need you to understand.
>> Have you ever considered speaking to them before you make a transaction like that? Have you ever had something like this happen?
Have I ever been arrested? No, no, no.
Wait, what? Listen to what he said. Have you ever No, I am listening. Okay.
Have you ever considered speaking to them about what it is you're trying to do prior to doing what So so I can explain it to you. Yeah.
I went to CVS out here I was telling you that actually I came outside and saw all the smoke.
You know what I'm saying? I was getting the the vaccine.
I'm not trying out here, bro. Like I'm not saying out loud how much money I'm taking out. That's what I'm saying. I'm not talking about speaking to somebody like that. I'm saying, "Hey, can I speak to a manager in an office somewhere?"
Have you ever considered doing something like that? I considered it now that you say Yeah. I was trying to take money out.
But I up to this point every Bank of America I've ever gone to never asked me. Got you. You know what I'm saying? I understand. So so so you're you're explaining your perspective, right? You're the ones with guns and vests. Mhm. You know what I'm saying?
What's what's what's my perspective?
What's my perspective? I don't know. You tell me what I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Bro, Yeah. I got I got I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I put my own card in.
Put my own PIN in. She asked to see my ID. I gave it to her. Yeah.
Then she goes in the back and I'm waiting for the for the for the and then the people keep coming out, "Hey, they're taking care of you. They're taking care of you." You know you know you know it's just taking take while.
Next thing I I hear What?
>> Yeah. I hear a glock getting pulled out.
That's what I hear. A glock? I hear a glock getting pulled out from the holster. Hey sir, can I talk to you for a minute?
You know what I'm saying?
You You so you you see my perspective?
Yeah.
Yeah. So So I I mean Not every How many officers do you got on there?
It's not, man. I mean Yeah, there's five of us out here.
Give him uh give him the case number regarding the incident. That way he What's the case number?
Yeah, no one's withholding anything. But well, do we have any more of their property?
Give it Give them all their property.
No one's withholding anything from you.
No one's Can Can I just Go ahead and take your time.
Lundy, can you give me a case number?
Y'all Y'all Y'all Y'all are withholding [ __ ] from me, though, right now, right?
What are we withholding? I call Atlanta and I say, "Hey, Officer Fernandez."
Yeah, that would be me. I got first initials on y'all on y'all names, right?
>> Yeah. Why ain't it on here? We're going to I'm going to give you a case number.
Why ain't it on here? Let's Let's put the first initials on here, like y'all got on y'all jackets.
That's why we're giving you the case number. Now, calm down.
You telling me to calm down? Yeah. Okay.
Yes, I am. Officer We're giving you a case number that identifies every single person that was out here. We've got camera Excuse me? I don't know what the case number is, but Okay. Yeah, I got I got you. I just know you got a very common last name.
Fernandez? Yes. I got And I'm going to call the office and I'm going to call Metro Atlanta and say, "Officer Fernandez." And they probably got more than one. I got you. That's all I'm saying. Okay. You feel me? And you telling me to calm down and [ __ ] 6699 I got it, officer. All right. Well, we're going to give you everything that's associated with this call.
Everyone's recording. There's no question about what happened. All right?
Put the case number on that same one.
Yeah.
>> [clears throat] >> So, the teller said that you weren't speaking to her.
And That's I'm just telling you what she what she's saying.
She got She got Look, man. She got scared when a black dude handed her a note.
Yeah, I mean I Yeah, I don't know what to say to that either. I mean that I asked I asked her if she could do that for me, right? And she said And she said, "What account?" I said, "It's my checking my ID. She said, "You got a ID?" I said, "Yeah, you got my ID."
You know what I'm saying? I was on the phone the whole time, bro. You know what I'm saying?
But she was scared. Yeah.
>> She got to admit that. You know what I'm saying? Like you know like And that's And that's fine, bro. Let me give you background on this story that is just coming to light. Uh his name is Ryan Coogler.
Black Panther director Ryan Coogler was mistaken for a bank robber at a metro Atlanta Bank of America. He was detained, according to the police reports that we just got access to. Let me remind you of the iconic movie Black Panther.
Chadwick Boseman, who passed away because of his battle with cancer, has put up a picture of them side by side.
One of the most successful movies in the history of movie making.
The director was in Atlanta on business. I will share that business in a minute. The incident unfolded January 7th, 2022 at the Bank of America at 1280 West Paces Ferry Road.
Now, that is supposed to be an affluent part of the city.
When police responded to reports of a man trying to rob the bank, according to an Atlanta Police Department report, a Bank of America employee called police after Kugler passed him a filled-out slip to withdraw money with a note written on it asking for the bank teller to be discreet with the transaction. Makes sense to me, the man is withdrawing 10,000 bucks.
It is his account. He filled it out properly. His name is there. His ID is there. He writes on it, and please, listen, "Just give me the cash discreetly.
I don't want everybody knowing I'm walking out of the bank with $10,000 cash."
Okay?
Simple request.
Officers determined uh well, actually, when officers arrived at the scene, okay? When officers arrived at the scene, Kugler was still inside the bank. You know why he was still inside the bank? Because he wasn't robbing the bank. Officers brought him outside, handcuffed him as they investigated. So, he gets arrested.
They handcuff him.
Officers determined that Kugler was attempting to withdraw his own damn money.
A cash amount valued over 10,000 bucks, the bank teller received a notification from Kugler's account and told her manager that he was trying to rob the bank.
Now, let me bring some common sense to this situation.
Banks are facilities that hold our money.
I literally work, and then I let the bank hold my money because the bank benefits by the interest accrued on that money.
So, they hold my money.
I'm not mandated by law to do this. I do this as an option, a choice.
And then I go to get the money that I've worked for, and you put me under arrest for trying to get my own money back.
That is what happened to this major film director.
Officers determined that the incident was a mistake by Bank of America, and Coogler was released. Two people who Coogler was with were also detained and released.
Bank of America apologized to Coogler, and he was allowed to go on his way. I'm sure this was very embarrassing for this young dynamic star who is very good at his craft.
Bank of America issued a statement confirming the incident, writing, "We deeply regret that this incident occurred. It never should have happened, and we have apologized to Mr. Coogler."
Here's the problem, Bank of America.
This likely happened because you have some structural issues in the culture of your company.
While you may release a statement indicating that this is simply a mistake, an accident, an isolated incident, I beg to differ.
I think this was connected to a deeper culture inside of your company.
Do you think if that would have been a white male who simply wrote all of his information, identified himself, put his identification with the uh withdrawal slip, and said, "Listen, and make sure it's discreet." Do you think the police would have been called on that individual? There was nothing here to indicate that a bank robbery was taking place. Nothing.
Nothing. Coogler directed the original Black Panther, which was also the highest-grossing film of all time by a black director.
He has been in Atlanta directing the Black Panther sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
And because of the sheer amount of people who flocked to see Black Panther, the film took in an eye-opening 1.3 plus billion at the worldwide box office.
Okay.
So, you got to talk about the elephant that's in the room.
Put his picture up again.
He walks into a bank. They don't know that he's a multi-millionaire, film director, and honestly should not matter.
You mean to tell me that when he filled out his slip, his withdrawal slip, that the person he handed it to did not even bother to put in the information to verify that he had access to these funds?
That he was in fact a consumer at Bank of America? You mean to tell me they did not do the basic thing and simply verify the account before calling the police?
Mr. Tucker, what are your thoughts on this?
Okay, so boom, we already know how this got started. Like you said, common sense is not that common.
Had that person check the account, check the name, and verify ID the way they were supposed to, and went through the proper protocols, we wouldn't be here right now. But here we are. Bank of America, if you didn't have the money, you should have just said that. We know Bank of America going through it cuz you know, everybody with the little EDD and PPP and stuff then took all of Bank of Bank of America money, but y'all didn't have to do them like that. And I think an apology is not enough because if we were to disrespect any other entity in the way that this black man was disrespected, we would be canceled, it'd be all over the news, we would have a whole issue. So, I hopefully that teller who was not trained properly, clearly, is no longer working there.
But, I think apology is not enough. They need to be held accountable, and they need to change their practices and how they're training their employees.
Yeah, and that's the issue. They have not come out with a proclamation about them changing practices or making sure there's additional training or even some level of discipline for violating protocol.
What kind of a thief has a bank account with you?
What kind of a thief [clears throat] is in your system?
What kind of a thief has a cannot?
What kind of a thief?
What kind of a thief comes [clears throat] calmly and he doesn't have a pew pew? Like So, they just saw this black man and they were like, "Yeah, a thief. There goes a thief." And y'all know, this reminds me of uh Ryan Coogler. And we all know he's a successful black producer and director. Shout out to Black Panther, [ __ ] I watched the news and I saw how Ryan Coogler was racially profiled as a thief and they were like, "Come on, man. Come on. You are trying to talk to a millionaire black man like he's a thief."
He comes to the teller.
He has a bank card.
And you call the popo?
Hello? I'm sorry, there's a black big dude here who's wearing a face mask.
Excusez-moi.
So, this is the level of HATE that we have reached at. And you cannot convince me that it's anything else.
Um if it's not HATE, then I I say it's ignorance. No, it's not even ignorance because I mean, if you see somebody is not armed, you will simply say, "Sir, you got an account with us?
Can I see your ID?"
As simple as that. Take the measures. Do they know that how security at at the bank? No, but this person is at the ATM inside your facility, your own customer, a millionaire at that, and you call the po-po?
What are they trying to insinuate? These black successful young men, they probably stole someone's credit card and now they are stealing money from the ATM machine.
Guys, guys, I generally don't even have energy for this.
Same bank, by the way. Same bank that did this to this young man is the same bank that called the po-po on Ryan Coogler.
Imagine being there as a successful, hard-working black man with your money, and now you have to start explaining to the police why you are rich.
Oh, he withdrew a lot of money.
No, you need to start explaining to people you can employ, like 100 of them, that you can literally put on a monthly payroll. You now have to start explaining to them how you're rich, why you're rich, where did you get money from, why you coming to the ATM, why you withdrawing your money, why you wearing a face mask.
Isn't that crazy?
And for anybody that doesn't see a problem with this, maybe you are the problem.
And I need y'all to tell me what you think in the comment section.
Until when? You see, recently we were talking about how black men are racially being profiled and when the po-po comes they just pew pew them. They are not even given a chance to say, "Hey, officer, what are you doing?" No, they just get pew pewed.
Oh, now the pew pewing has stopped. We are literally having black successful men being called the police on because they're rich. Their only fault is being rich and black.
So, are they trying to tell us that there's no way black men can have money?
Uh-uh.
I'm confused.
I am confused.
And every single day when you want to chill and relax and not think about how racist the United States is, I once in a while, sooner or later you're going to get a reminder.
Are these people serious in their heads?
Do they think this is Jim Crow?
Hey, I need to calm down.
