Breast ultrasound scanning uses a quadrant system to systematically examine breast tissue: the upper outer quadrant (9-12 o'clock) is the most common area for pathology due to its connection to the axillary tail, while the four quadrants are defined as upper inner (12-3), lower inner (3-6), lower outer (9-6), and upper outer (9-12), with the orientation flipping for the left breast.

Breast Anatomy on Ultrasound 🩺🎯Learn how normal breast structures appear on ultrasound,Hinzugefügt:
So, another basics about [music] scanning breast anatomy is knowing the quadrants. Some radiologists will ask you to scan [music] either upper inner quadrant, lower inner quadrant, lower outer quadrant, or upper outer quadrant. And what that means is if you divide the [music] breast into four quadrants, from 12 to 3, assuming this is the right breast, [music] cuz over here on the outer side you would have the axillary. In the middle, you would have the median or the sternum and the chest plate is. And then on the left side would be the left breast. So, if we think of this is the right breast, from 12 to 3 [music] is the right upper inner quadrant.
Then from 3 to 6 [music] would be the right lower, so below the nipple, [music] inner, still inner, closer to the the cleavage line, and lower inner quadrant.
Then on the outside, from 9 to 6, >> [music] >> you would have the lower, below nipple, outer quadrant. And then your upper outer quadrant, from 9 to 12. And I highlighted this a few times because this is where the most [music] common area that you're going to find possible pathology cuz it also leads into the tail of the breast into the axilla. So, a lot of times we'll be scanning the right up the upper outer quadrant. But it is also important to notice to [music] know the other quadrants. So, if you do see have a radiologist that say, "Hey, can you look at the right upper inner quadrant?" Know that you are going to be scanning somewhere between 12 and 3:00.
Lower inner quadrant, 3 to 6. Lower outer quadrant, 9 to 6.
And then upper outer quadrant, 9 to 12.
And [music] this gets flip-flopped when you go to the left breast. So, if this was the left breast, pay no attention to these R's, this would be the left upper outer quadrant, left lower outer quadrant, left lower inner quadrant, and left upper inner quadrant.
