BAME Why This Term Fails Diverse Communities

[00:00:00]It homogenizes an extremely diverse group of people. For example, A stands for [music] Asian, but doesn't differentiate between South Asian, East Asian, Southeast Asian, Indian, Pakistani, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese.

[00:00:17]The same can be said for the B in BAME, and the ME often [music] includes white minority ethnic groups such as Gypsy, Roma, and Traveler of Irish [music] heritage groups, which dispels the common assumption that the term BAME refers to non-white groups only.

[00:00:32]Arguably, placing [music] an extremely diverse group of people into one category puts the types of oppressions faced by these diverse groups on a level playing field, [music] when that's just not the case. For example, black people can face anti-blackness from South Asian people and other minority ethnic groups, [music] too.

[00:00:51]It can also be said that the experience of an East Asian person is very different to that of a black person. So, it's unfair [music] to generalize such a diverse group under one blanket statement.
