Recovery timelines for ankle sprains vary by severity: Grade One sprains require about 1 week for light activity and 2-3 weeks for full sport; Grade Two sprains need 2-3 weeks for light activity and 4-6 weeks for full sport; Grade Three sprains require 3-4 months for full competition; and surgical repairs need 2-4 weeks for walking in a boot, 3 months for light jogging, and 4-6 months for full return to sport. However, time alone does not determine readiness—patients must demonstrate functional milestones including single leg hop without pain, passing balance testing, and performing sport-specific movements without hesitation, as returning too early is a leading cause of re-injury and chronic instability.

Every patient asks me the same question. When can I get back to playing? Here is the honest answer.Added:
Many patients ask me the same question.
When can I get back to playing? Here's the honest answer. I'm going to give you real timelines, not the optimistic ones you might find online. For a grade one sprain, you're looking at about one week before you can return to light activity, and two to three weeks before you're back to full sport. A grade two takes longer. Light activity around two to three weeks, full sport at four to six weeks if you've done your rehab properly. Grade three is a significant injury. You're looking at three to four months before you're back to full competition. And after surgical repair, the timeline extends further. Walking in a boot usually happens around two to four weeks, light jogging around three months. Full return to sport at four to six months. But here's what I really want you to understand. Time is not the only factor. Just because a certain number of weeks has passed does not mean you're cleared. You need to demonstrate that you can do a single leg hop without pain, pass balance testing, and perform sport-specific movements without hesitation. Those functional milestones matter more than the calendar. Coming back too early is one of the leading causes of re-injury and chronic instability. Be patient. It will pay off. I'm Dr. Athar.
