Lab Grown Blood BreakthroughAdded:
Scarlett Therapeutics has raised $4 million in seed funding and they announced that their lab-grown red blood cells survived in circulation for as long as donor-derived cells. This is a key credibility checkpoint for any type of future use for lab-grown red blood cells and the company is building towards three applications. The first is therapeutic red blood cells, second is universal off-the-shelf transfusion products, and the third is enhanced cells designed for human performance.
And so, we care about this because blood transfusion depends on a very fragile supply of blood. You have donors, you have matching, you have storage, you have timing, and Scarlett is trying to remove that dependency entirely by growing red blood cells from a stable, indefinitely expandable cell line. But the longevity implication goes further than just supply logistics. Engineered red blood cells as circulating therapeutic carriers could continuously detoxify the blood, they could deliver drugs, they could maintain biological stability. It's really a fundamentally different model for medicine and something that could be explored.
