The film’s success exposes the disconnect between performative outrage and actual audience interest, proving that ideological gatekeeping is no match for mass-market appeal. It serves as a humbling reminder that online culture wars are often just a loud minority shouting into a void.

THE ODYSSEY BACKLASH CONTINUES EVEN AFTER POSITIVE REVIEWS
Added:Would you cast a white woman to play like Rosa Parks in a movie? I don't think you would. But if you did, do you think that Whoopi would be fine with that? You know, I can't believe I got to tell grown folks this.
And we've said this over and over again.
People said it to you before the movie even came out. They were trying to help your dumb ass. This is fictional.
[laughter] ALL CAPS. OH, THIS IS FICTIONAL.
Helen of Troy is a mythical character.
This is literary history. M.
>> It's not real history. Okay.
>> Right. Right. Right.
>> God [clears throat] damn. I can't believe that this has to come out of our mouths right here. Talking to grown ass people.
People, there were a lot of predictions made about The Odyssey before its release. For example, here's one. And what will speak most is the fact that nobody's going to go see this woke movie and it's going to be a box office bust and they're going to make zero money on it.
>> And as you can see, >> this this movie did actually bomb at the box office this weekend. Uh grossed only $124.5 million domestically and a measly little $264 million worldwide. So Christopher Nolan has finally failed. He's >> [laughter] >> He's drinking his tears right now, >> ready to pack it up.
>> And he was saying, "How how could I have been so woke? [laughter] [clears throat] Why did I Why did I Why did I catch that damn trans person?
[laughter] Curse the THEY BROUGHT MY MOVIE DOWN.
BOY, I That is uh >> by the way, that's what's >> I like the one person in the middle that's like I'm I'm going to go watch it."
>> No. [laughter] No. That person's actually worse. Oh, really?
>> Oh, people. Yeah, people one on the end.
That's uh that's uh uh Katie Zacharia.
This is Newsmax right here. And she's just one of the many people on this network right here that was talking about how this movie is going to be one of the biggest bombs of the year. Boy, I love it when people not only talk too soon, but they do it out their ass. And a lot of asses were talking about this movie, man. talking about how this movie was going to be such a failure before the movie even came out.
And as we can see, you know, we're joking the movie's a hit. It was one of the biggest hits on on his opening weekend already. One of the biggest hits of the summer of the year.
And some people are still confused by that. They're like, I don't understand.
But but the the wokeness, I don't get it. Well, when they do a report like that, you know, in in advance, they're trying to influence the audience, but anybody who's on the fence to go like, "Yeah, why would anybody go see this?"
and make somebody go, "Oh, yeah. I guess I shouldn't go see it." But ultimately, they did.
>> That is so with this particular movie, that is so that you couldn't be further from uh doing the the very much the wrong thing.
that is so illconceived to come out here and try to take on this particular movie. There's a lot of things that, you know, go mess with Supergirl again or something. There's a lot of things that you can mess with. You don't want to mess with this movie right here. And that's one of the things we're going to talk about, you know, because a lot of people they like again, they're like, I don't understand this woke ass movie, but it should have. Why are people agreeing with me?
>> Still using that word incorrectly, by the way. I can't still can't believe y'all woke still using it at all. Yeah. Just even using the word it it it types you.
It lets everybody know what you're about.
>> But don't worry people, for those of you who are still confused by these numbers you see in front of you.
>> Yeah.
>> We're here to help bring you back into reality.
>> We're here to explain to you why this is a success despite the crimes against history.
Martin, this is history they messing with.
>> I know.
>> How dare you know this? This really happened. Oh, Odysius is rolling over in his grave.
>> Man, we offended all these Cyclops and witches out here, man, with this incorrect history. [snorts] All these giants, [laughter] other mythological creatures that [snorts] existed in real history.
>> That's always been one of the f my favorite thoughts about this is like it wasn't accurate when it was written.
>> Yeah.
>> No, no. That's one of the things I said in the reviews like when Homer was writing about this and again, some of y'all so dumb. Homer Simpson. No, it wasn't. [laughter] What does the Simpsons have to do with this? No. Homer, the who wrote the who wrote the Odyssey and know what the the alien?
>> Yeah. Yeah. He He dude didn't know even how correctly or accurate he was writing about some of the things or the regions the real regions that existed.
>> Right. Right. Right. Right. You know, stories of the war. These all stories that were passed down orally.
>> Yeah. So, you know what? We're I'm not here unlike all the critics out there before. I'm not here to attack.
We already have enough divisiveness [snorts] going on right now. I'm here to help. To help you just let go. I want to see you move on with your life. I want to [snorts] see you be better. But no, [laughter] I just hide everything into this.
>> No. No. Just let go. Go pet a puppy or something, man. Just [laughter] We're here to help you. We're going to try to explain to you what went wrong this weekend for you. Uh, so just to jump right into it, man, the most obvious, of course, is the casting. The thing is, if you complained about the casting in this, uh, you were probably so focused on it that you didn't see the rest of the world laughing at how dumb you sound. You were so focused in talking to other people thought like you, you didn't realize just how stupid what you was saying is.
And believe me, and and what makes it worse is that these are people who are not exactly dumb by any other measure.
They just they just so caught up on an agenda.
>> They're so caught up in their own ignorance of on that one particular thing that you just don't realize just how dumb this whole theory, you know, your theories about the casting sound.
Uh, you know, the the the the critics, the conservative critics out there got so hung up on the history of this that they never saw the stupidity in their arguments.
>> Would you cast a white woman to play like Rosa Parks in a movie? I don't think you would. But if you did, do you think that Whoopi would be fine with that?
>> You know, I can't believe I got to tell grown folks this, and we've said this over and over again.
People said it to you before the movie even came out. They were trying to help your dumb ass. This is fictional.
ALL CAPS. OH, THIS IS FICTIONAL.
Helen of Troy is a mythical character.
This is literary history.
>> It's not real history. Okay.
>> Right. Right. Right.
>> God [clears throat] damn. I can't believe that this has to come out of our mouths right here talking to grown ASS PEOPLE >> WHO SHOULD KNOW BETTER. YOU AIN'T THAT STUPID. You just want to be. You just choose to be. I And I guess that painting is supposed to represent Helen Troy.
>> Yeah, because it's white.
>> Yeah. I mean, this painting that was not painted around the time that she existed.
>> Yeah. And they even said this is the only piece of history we could [laughter] find.
>> I went on Google.
>> No, that's a great point cuz they did say that. Yeah. This dude like this is the only piece of history we can find right here. The most historical piece, right? Like do you see what you know how you know how you sound right now? A lot of these conservatives keep running into a wall with these topics. Like one of them that I saw was Kevin Sorbo be like, "Oh, I hate this movie for the casting."
And somebody subweeted like, "You had a black Helen of Troy on your show Hercules."
>> Yeah, but it ain't a movie. [laughter] >> And it's not like he looks anything like any version of Hercules that has ever been painted or represented.
>> Yes. Not even a little bit.
And again, if this movie had all white people in a Greek fantasy speaking with British accents, we already said that, nobody would have a problem with the accuracy of this at all. Yeah, there's been so many real historic movies where it's been cast with white people who were not who were not that, you know, the ethnicity for that part, but they spoke with British accents and nobody said anything. My two favorites are one, Enemy at the Gates, which I love, but it's all Russian soldiers talking British. Talking British, and Valkyrie with Tom Cruz, where they're supposed to be assassinating Hitler, and they all none of them have German accents. They all speak with British accents except for him with an American accent. Yeah.
When were they for that? [laughter] Exactly.
Y'all see a black face and just lose y'all's goddamn mind, man. That's what happens. A trans person walks on the scene, then you worried about accuracy.
Mhm.
>> You see, you [laughter] know, people, there's a point in this movie where man get turned into pigs. [laughter] All right. Do you do you think that's historically accurate? Do you think that really happened? You really think there was sorcery back in the day, turning people into goddamn pigs or that there was a giant cyclops?
>> Yeah.
>> Well, it could have been a giant guy with a deformed eye, you know.
[laughter] >> I'm just saying.
>> Maybe didn't mean pigs literally.
[laughter] They just wouldn't stop eating.
>> No, they they they literally changed man into pigs, which is one of my favorite parts of the movie. Those men had been through so much [ __ ] in that movie [laughter] that when they got turned back into humans, they were just kind of like, "Whatever, man.
At least we didn't get killed."
>> I know. [laughter] AND THEY DIDN'T EVEN BUDGE. THEY GOT TURNED BACK LIKE, "YEAH, go get my [ __ ] man." [laughter] I ain't even mad at her.
So, the counterargument for something like this, and I've heard this from several people that, man, for some reason, Black Panther's a go-to black dude for these arguments.
>> They said, "You know what? So, I guess it' be okay if a if a white guy played Black Panther."
And listen, the difference is, my dear dumbass, is that Black Panther is a character who his ethnicity is a a defining part of his identity.
>> It plays a part in that character's background, history, not real history, by the way, you know, just but his lore, you know, uh, a lot of stories are centered around his his ethnicity.
If you want me to put it different way, it's the same reason why I wouldn't cast an all black cast to to to play in Good Fellas or an Italian Mob movie, you know?
>> Yeah. Well, but I mean, with the Black Panther argument, it's like, would you do that because you feel there's not enough superhero movies led by white people?
>> Yeah.
>> Well, you know, they just it's just they hear black and they're like, well, and that's why they always go to Black Panther because they hear first of all black. Well, I guess I can't a white guy can't play Black Panther, right? And I was like, "No, that's not it." You know, and the reason why I use Good Fellas is because they are Italian mob guys. You wouldn't put no other uh characters in there to play Italian mob people unless they were Italian. I feel like we missing skipping over the obvious thing that his name is Black Panther. There's just no getting around that very, very first part of that. Whereas opposed to Helen of Troy is not white Helen of Troy.
>> Well, Marvel comics actually even have an old universe where they had a white dude played the Black Panther. Yeah.
Yeah, they did for a moment. Yeah, they did.
>> It was just like a spin on what story still shut up. Here you got it.
>> And you could even get around like, "Oh, well that's just a title, you know. I Yeah, I I I get it." But the thing is between >> So the Odyssey story doesn't with Helen Helen Troy, the story doesn't rely on her ethnicity.
It's not centered around her. There's no background story where her her ethnicity plays a role in this. It is such a fantasy story that people can do creative interpretations just like they do with Shakespeare.
>> You know, most people I'll tell you why most people get hung up on her being a black woman in this movie because they still assume that the standard of beauty is whiteness.
>> Sure, >> that's what they're doing. Don't let them turn around and give you this history [ __ ] It's just like, oh, she's black, the most beautiful woman in the world.
And you know, look, I give you she was light-skinned, but but she's dark black, too. Oh, hell no. Nobody's falling for that [ __ ] No. No. Is it's, you know, some people even make the argument that Helen Troy being described as the most beautiful woman in the world is also even challenging beauty standards out there, you know, because it's because no one is the most beautiful person of anything. Just like no movie is the the best movie ever. [clears throat] Nothing is perfect. nothing, you know, it's if if it's based on opinion, if it's based on, you know, uh you know, you know, uh you know, being it's objective, then no, it's that doesn't exist, >> right?
>> The most beautiful woman in the world does not exist. You know, I don't know how your stupid ass is arguing over that, too. Just admit what it is.
>> How dare you change into a black woman and say she's the most beautiful woman in the world. We got this nice, fine, blonde hair, blue-haired, perfectly good white woman right here to play the role.
And it's far time we stop taking like business away from these poor white women, man. [laughter] People hung up about Elliot Page, man.
And again, our good friends over at Newsmax are willing to explain the problem.
>> That's the person that's going to be playing the greatest warrior in history because to the left that is normal.
>> Stupid ass. He He did not play Achilles.
>> No. In the movie. Yeah. Just when he said that I was like I don't remember that character being called Achilles.
>> No. A little spoiler alert for y'all, man. Uh Elliot Page did not play Achilles. You know, these these things have been such a non-issue at this point cuz the movie has been debunking, poking holes in people's and in and their their hopes of this movie being a failure because they expect all their problems, all the problems that they saw at the movie, all the criticisms to be bigger than what they were. And when you saw the movie, those things were not that big of a deal.
>> Yeah. Yeah. You went to hatewatch. You went, "Oh, so Helen's not really even a big part of this movie."
>> No.
>> Uh, and yeah, Elliot Paige, two scenes, huh? Well, dang.
>> Yeah. Well, it's got to be something else. And there always is. Well, that brown guy don't look muscular.
[laughter] They they have people You have people now saying they're looking at other people and saying, "Well, you know, that guy, he don't look warrior enough." Just stop.
>> Yeah. Just just now you now you're reaching for anything.
>> I don't like his hat. [laughter] He didn't have that character didn't have a beard, you know, any anything, man. That people are just grasping at anything to complain about with this film. So, you know, that the whole casting thing ended up being something that these people could not really go in and be that upset about because those things that they were talking about did not have the kind of impact on the family they thought it would. As you said, Martin, those th those roles that they were [ __ ] the way y'all were talking, you thought this was the this was going to be the Helen Troy the black Helen Troy movie.
>> Mhm.
>> You know, that's and it wasn't like that. Her role was smaller. Uh Elliot Pages his his role was small. So, you know, [sighs] that put to rest a lot of critics out there who were criticizing this. A lot of people actually turned around on it.
But, as I said, there's still some people out there who was who were trying to reach for something. just move on with your life. Uh, another thing that that that that that really kind of shut people up and should have shut them up in the first place.
Yeah. You should have never even said anything with this. Christopher Nolan, >> wrong person. You never should have even the moment you heard Christopher Nolan's name, you never should have approached this movie with the negativity and the vitil that you did, man. Look, you you can say with this movie, well, personally, I don't like what they're doing, or I I hope it sucks. I hope this movie fails. You can say things like that, but don't you ever don't you ever bet on Nolan being a failure.
>> He has this man. And I'm not, look, I'm not even a Nolan fanboy because there are movies of his I don't like and then some movies I do like. I'm not one of these guys who jerking off every time a Chris Nolan movie is about to come out.
But this man has ingeniously combined mature artistrydriven film making with crowd-pleasing blockbuster qualities and he has created unrivaled success with those movies and the way he makes films and his love for films and also understanding how to entertain an audience.
>> Oh absolutely. He So with that, he's created a a huge dedicated fan base >> that believe in his work and got his back when the movie comes out.
[laughter] Now this some [ __ ] you better wait, you know, like like if it fails, you could you could come out and fake it and say, "Yeah, I knew it." You know, >> I tried to tell you.
>> But these the man, these fans got his back when the movie comes out. Even if the movie is going to suck that first weekend, it ain't gonna fail.
>> You know, saying his movie fails will fail before it comes out. That is a dumb bet right there. Uh if nothing else, if you understand the nature of films, you understand him, you know that his movie is going to succeed that first weekend because that that fan base is just that dedicated.
>> Uh you know, I think and I want to ask you this. I think one of the things that kind of drove people and got them excited and made them so convinced and made them believe in their minds that this movie was going to fail, what made them so confident in that criticism.
I I'm not I can't say this with 100% certainty, but I think that the a lot of conservative critics, they smell blood in the water and they were fueled by the failure of Supergirl.
>> Absolutely.
>> You know what I'm saying?
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, you know, we had the the big blockbuster movies uh failed in a row, you know, starting with He-Man [clears throat] >> and Supergirl and what was the one more recently?
>> Um uh Moana.
>> Moana.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Uh and you know, and that Yeah. Watching that happen, there was that feeling of like, well, these movies aren't untouchable anymore. And Yeah.
Blood in the water. Like this is just going to be another one on the pile. And >> but did you notice with those other movies, so Mass of the Universe, >> huge bomb, [clears throat] >> they weren't on that movie like like like they are. Yeah.
>> The Odyssey or or Supergirl Moana, they just figured, all right, Disney, you know, they they got a track record.
They'll be all right.
>> You know, they didn't mess with Moana and and and He-Man or Master of the Universe like they did with Supergirl, right? Because and listen, Supergirl, they they call that woke too because obviously it's got a female lead and it's an easy target. And while I do believe that maybe some female themes in there, they weren't done very well and they might have been pushed a little like a tad too much like the whole sex trafficking of little girls.
>> Yeah.
>> That just that wasn't treated with any kind of urgency or wasn't given enough attention to create any kind of importance for it. And so I think that that was done badly. But man, there are so many reasons why this movie failed besides Yeah. Woke.
>> Yeah. Exactly. Or it failed because it's a it was a female superhero. There's, you know, there was some that we talked about such as people not knowing who Supergirl is that as well as Superman.
>> You know, she's just not as popular of a character. The movie just kind of being a a tame more I I would guess mad version of Guardians of the Galaxy.
>> Yeah.
>> We've seen this all before. Well, the thing about conservatives is the way that they see things. People that are this hyperconervative is um they don't allow things that challenge their worldview. So, in a month they won't talk about the Odyssey, but they will always bring up like Go Woke, Go Broke, and they'll go as far back as like uh the Snow White movie.
>> Like they'll they'll list like four or five movies, which >> if you look over six years, like it is an impressive list when they're like, "Oh, Snow White failed. This failed, this failed." And it's like, yeah, but that's was over 6 years. You're just saying like one movie failed a year.
Like really picking.
>> They have to uh No, they it's their job to do this. I mean, and it >> if they have to come in and sound stupid, then so be it. They they have an agenda to push.
>> Cuz I even this guy I'm sure he has to go home and be like, >> "Yeah, [laughter] >> no one's buying this, man."
>> Yeah, I know.
>> And you even he has to be like, "And I want to see this movie, too." [laughter] >> Right.
He can't go.
>> He can't go. Yeah. He has to sneak to go see it. You got to go to trench coat like he's going to see a porn film or something. [laughter] >> Like I mean because it sound when you hear these people and I can't believe you when you say that because they put on an extra layer of smuggness that is just too much.
>> Yeah. And they're way too loud about it.
>> Yeah.
>> Picture of hell. But Achilles is like the most famous warrior mythological warrior in history. Not just Greek history.
>> He even said it. You can't say mythological and history.
>> You can't. Yeah, you even said it. You just You CAN'T YOU CAN'T DROP THAT WORD and then move on and start talking about it. History and historical accuracy.
>> Well, he keeps he he he he slips in these things, these these non-truths as if they're facts and say like uh the most beautiful woman in the world in the world, a white woman. And what would you think if like like stop and that her white that's that's not an established fact. You you just said that. Let's back it up.
Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> All of history. And to play that role, Christopher Nolan cast Elliot Page, formerly known as Ellen Paige, a biological woman. And now 60 Minutes got wind of all this and they are doing damage control for Christopher Nolan and his casting choices.
>> Meanwhile, they didn't give a >> No. [laughter] When you get right down to it, these are some of the most desperate loads of a station like this >> when they want to they they because they know when I think about it, they know that this movie is going to be huge.
>> Mhm.
>> And even they have to attach themselves to it.
>> But they can't come out and say, "Oh, we can't wait to see this. It's going to be awesome." No, that's not their brand.
>> But they got to attach themselves to like the biggest news and this is one of the biggest movies and so yeah, they got to come out and say something. So yeah, you know, they just kind of come in and just be [ __ ] about it, you know, and it's desperate when it when you get right down to it is when you when you get so desperate or when you when you have to actually when you are locked into just giving your audience whatever they want to hear, even if it's not based on reality, that's a desperate move.
>> Do you know what I mean?
>> Yeah. Yeah. We just we just going to sit up here and just and and just act like, you know, this is not I mean, everybody knows what's happening. We just going to sit up here and just >> act like none of that [ __ ] is real.
>> Uhhuh. Act like it's the worst thing.
And come on, guys. Come up with some angles. Do something.
>> Look, it's only half as good as citizen vigilante. I'm sorry. [laughter] >> Point is though, that's not everybody right now. Even other conservative critics have to come out and say, "All right, it's good [ __ ] >> [laughter] >> Oh, your boy Ben Shapiro.
>> This is one of these situations where when Ben Shapiro has to come in and tell you to settle your ass down, you probably need to do it. Wow. Ben Shapiro came out and said, not even begrudgingly like, "All right, the movie's okay." He said, "No, the movie's excellent. The movie's great." Now, he did put in something like, "Yeah, okay, there's some things in there that politically they got wrong, but if somebody has a great smile, you don't," this is their analogy. I mean, when somebody has a great smile, you you know, you don't you don't you don't you don't ignore it just because there's a something in their teeth or whatever. He made some comparison like that, you know.
>> I don't know. But he had to he had to come out and say, "No, just y'all just stop. Y'all out there acting like this is this is something that is terrible and talking about it's gonna fail and still wishing for some kind of failure >> with you know after it's a proven hit.
It doesn't make any of us look good.
>> I'm hoping that we're seeing the last gasps of wokeness but unfortunately it seems to be continuing.
>> The last gasp of wokeness for them when you appropriated the word.
>> Yeah. [laughter] Yeah.
>> You killed that word.
>> Yeah. The last gasp of wokeness will be when you stop saying it.
>> Yeah. [laughter] >> Wow. He's coming in the other two. He actually seems like he's serious about it.
>> Oh, [laughter] >> cuz when you Man, look, when you when you when you bend over and you scrape all the [ __ ] off the surface, >> that's all they got is that word.
>> Yeah.
>> When you pull all this [ __ ] aside, the word woke is under there. That's all they got.
They have nothing else. So the thing is, man, you know, and listen, and the reason why a lot of these conservatives out there who are actually on board with the film right now, I mean, don't don't, you know, don't get this confused. They they're okay with this because those roles are small.
>> It like I said in the review, man, it is still centered on white male characters who are leading the movie >> and everybody's following them.
Everybody's a side character to them.
everybody. It's It's not any of It ain't the This ain't no trans story or anything. All right. Uh uh uh Helen of Troy, you know, her story is there to to to to add to somebody else's story, a bigger picture. You know, she hardly has any time in the film. So, but I'm not fixating on that cuz I ain't acting like you. So, [snorts] if you were still complaining about this movie, people, it is time to move on.
Reflect on your life.
>> Go do something, man. I mean, you know, it's summer time. Jesus, boy. Go get some ice cream. [laughter] >> Go watch Spider-Man next week.
>> Oh, they'll find something woke in that, too.
>> Yeah. Yeah. You know they will.
>> Yeah. They gonna find something.
>> Everyone's whitening it. They'll be fun.
[laughter] >> Oh, people. Yeah. Like I said, boy, you know what? Listen here.
>> Yeah. Why Spider-Man in love with a black girl? That's so >> Oh, yeah. There you go. There you go.
There you go. I remember when Mary Jane was a redhead, wholesome white woman.
What is this cocoa caramel [ __ ] right here?
>> [laughter] >> You can't even pick one. White or black.
You're just You're just confusing the kids out there. Matter of >> fact, all his love interests have been black. So, >> hell yeah. They've been black and and lightkinned.
>> He's got a type. He He obviously hates white people. [laughter] Stop. Look at the dog. Look at the puppy. Y'all calm down. It's okay. It's going to be all right. Let go. It's okay to let go. Let go.
>> I can't though.
