Scientists Just Created a Molecule That Stores Sunlight Like a BatteryAñadido:
What if sunlight could be stored like a rechargeable battery? Solar panels are great, but when the sun goes down, the energy stops. The real challenge is storing it. Scientists at UC Santa Barbara just published a study in the journal Science. They engineered a molecule called pyramidone, inspired by the architecture of DNA, that captures UV light and locks that energy into its chemical bonds. When hit by UV light, the molecule twists into a strained high-energy form called Dewar pyramidone.
It stays locked that way for up to 3 years until you add acid or heat. Then it snaps back, releasing energy as heat instantly. In the lab, 107 mg of this material boiled water in half a second.
Its energy density? Over 1.6 MJ per kilogram, roughly double that of a standard lithium-ion battery. This is part of a field called molecular solar thermal energy storage, where instead of converting sunlight to electricity, the material itself becomes the battery.
