[00:00:42]Um and has left me alone uh in our apartment with uh his PC. So I'm going to going to have fun. Um I don't know what I could do with his PC. It's a [ __ ] up. But I'm alone with it and I get to play Slime Rancher with like the best I don't know. Good PC components.

[00:01:14]So with Linguini gone and having [music] not planned to make a video before he left, he has asked me to make one.

[00:01:22]And uh as you know we are university students. We have exams. It is exam period. I am dying not only from my poor time management uh but also the UK just getting being broiling what broiling broiling broiling me alive.

[00:01:46]Uh I know that a lot of uh viewers in uh different countries with probably higher temperatures will be like laughing and being like, haha, you can't you can't um can't tolerate 30 degrees, that's crazy.

[00:02:04]It's uh it's interesting. That's all I can say, really.

[00:02:10]Uh But anyways, uh for this video, I've decided that I will do another psychology thing because between making this video and revising, I thought why don't I just combine the two?

[00:02:46]So, uh for not my last video, but I believe the video before, uh I did uh I covered the topic of the dark triad, which kind of just talked about uh I believe I don't know what I don't know what I called them, but it covered like uh psych like being a psychopath, being a narcissist, and having Machiavellianism, which I had not heard of until I went to that lecture.

[00:03:17]Um in any case, I think I briefly mentioned the big five personalities, so I thought why not go over that? Uh that might be fun. That might be cool.

[00:03:46]Nah, it's fine. I can deal with that later. Anyways, uh the big five personality traits, Um, I mentioned it in Dark Triad video briefly and thought, why not go over it uh, in this one since uh, it's going to be relevant to my exam, absolutely.

[00:04:03]Uh, and uh, I don't know, might be fun. A lot of people they like [music] to do uh, personality quizzes.

[00:04:13]I don't know if it's still a thing people do, but I know that I know they used to like doing that.

[00:04:19]I'm such a great YouTuber.

[00:04:21]>> [laughter] >> Um, in which I will go over the the Myers-Briggs. Actually, no yeah, it's a fruit. Cuz I will go over the Myers-Briggs uh, personality type, but uh, for now we'll go over actual psychologically valid um, I guess approaches to personality. There are quite a few ways you could go about uh, personality. A lot of people such as Freud um, has said their piece on personality. Uh, but the one that I will be going over today is not too theory-based.

[00:05:02]Um, so the I have mentioned the Big Five. What is the Big Five? Uh, it goes over five personality traits uh, which is openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. And I will go over what those mean, don't worry. So, uh, we kind of just remember this as like ocean um, as like what is it? It's not an abbreviation. It's uh, I don't know, but you it's like where you take the first letter of the words and you remember that. Oh my god, my notes fell down.

[00:05:47]My notes are back up. Anyways, uh start with openness. So, openness uh measure uh right, all these traits are measured on sort of a scale.

[00:06:00]Uh so, like you might be high or low in one of these traits. And so, for openness, if you're high in openness, you are uh more creative, you're more open to new experiences and ideas and such.

[00:06:15]Um and if you're low, I guess I got the opposite of that. You you're not don't really want to experience anything new.

[00:06:23]Uh maybe a bit more logical, not sure.

[00:06:27]Um yeah. So, that's openness.

[00:06:30]Conscientiousness uh describes your work ethic. So, you have high conscientiousness, you're going to be like working hard, like thinking about your future, and like, you know, like being goal-oriented and stuff like that.

[00:06:43]And if you've low conscientiousness, uh you you just don't do that. You're lazy lazy piece of [ __ ] I guess. That's That's That's what the theory says. Sorry, buddy.

[00:06:54]Um and extraversion, and that's pretty obvious in the name, I think. Why am I not putting this in the feeders? I made these for a reason. Jesus.

[00:07:05]Um So, extraversion. I mean, it's in the name.

[00:07:09]You're either more extroverted or introverted, and that's pretty simple.

[00:07:13]And agreeableness is like your Like hmm, I want to say social etiquette, but that's not exactly the word. You're more like empathetic or sympathetic, rather. Um you you know, like you have good relation like good social relations, I guess.

[00:07:33]Uh whereas if you or if you scored low on agreeableness, you probably wouldn't you might be more like critical and more like I don't know, direct with with your social interactions.

[00:07:47]Finally, you have neuroticism, which is kind of just like emotional regulation.

[00:07:54]Um and yeah, that's the big five. So, all of these traits uh kind of like can predict the type of behaviors.

[00:08:06]Oh, woah, okay.

[00:08:09]Um all of these traits can kind of predict like what behaviors you might do.

[00:08:14]Um and all linked with like other like even like diagnoses. So, um let's say you have uh an eating disorder. Uh you're probably low on neuroticism, so you're not And when did you And did you get here?

[00:08:41]And you have fun.

[00:08:42]Um let me think.

[00:08:45]What was I saying? Oh gosh.

[00:08:47]The playing slime game is so distracting. It's not It's not helpful.

[00:08:52]Um I know.

[00:08:56]All right, so if you have an eating disorder uh you might you're probably going to score low score low on uh neuroticism since like it might be a bit more difficult to emotionally regulate. So, you might turn to external ways to regulate your emotions such as controlling how you eat.

[00:09:15]Um there's other stuff with like the other traits, but nothing comes to mind right now, which is uh says a lot about my revision.

[00:09:27]Um but anyways uh yeah, so there's there's a lot of predictive stuff that these traits usually do. You'll see a lot of uh studies using the big five.

[00:09:43]Uh, so measure certain things. So like study might be like, "Oh, what's the relation between like being a narcissist and and like [music] the big five personality traits." So they'll use this scale. And if you want to find out your personality traits in the big five, there's a lot of lot of free websites that should allow you to do that.

[00:10:08]Um, so yeah, go have fun.

[00:10:12]And there is also another sort of approach to personality, which is called HEXACO.

[00:10:21]Now, psychology has I'm not sure about other sciences, but psychology has like quite a big problem with the fact that a lot of uh studies like a lot of things published about it is all in the west. The big America, big oil got their big grips on on psychology. So would you believe a lot of the findings aren't really found internationally or or globally or whatever.

[00:10:54]So other people have come up with HEXACO, which kind of just adds another trait to the big five, which is honestly in humility.

[00:11:06]And this trait would measure how modest and sincere you are uh compared to God dammit.

[00:11:40]Um being like sincere and like modest. And if you score low on Okay. If you uh score low on this trait, uh you're probably more greedy and more sly.

[00:11:55]Um and that's more generalizable to like the like internationally. So, across countries and stuff like that.

[00:12:03]Uh which we love to see cuz we What what are the point of What's the point of researching all this stuff if you're not going to be able to actually draft it onto the population, you know?

[00:12:16]Um So, yeah, that's uh it's kind of like the what a lot of I think empirical Empirical being like a like actual like data studies.

[00:12:33]Uh like I like evidence Oh, yeah, I forgot I was going to feed you.

[00:12:37]Well, I guess I'll do that at some point.

[00:12:41]Um love empirical like evidence-based sort of uh studies uh are or or what they're called.

[00:12:49]Um So, yeah. And this the things that I've just described, they're like a trait approach to personality. Obviously, you have more descriptive approaches, which would be like Freud saying that everyone wants to have sex or or um uh I I forget the other people's names, which is not good. But, uh there's one where it's like, "Oh, you know, your spirit and your mind are like different and like connected things and stuff like that.

[00:13:28]So, those ones are more theory-based.

[00:13:32]Um which, you know, doesn't It's It's just a different way to go about personality.

[00:13:39]The trait approach is uh very much just like kind of just measure what you can see in the world. Um [snorts] so uh the there are top What?

[00:14:49]Um yeah, trait approach is the Oh, right. So, there are like a few ways that like um I guess theories or like the way research is done uh is the There's like two sort of like methods to it.

[00:15:11]Um which is top-down where you go based off the theory and then try to find that theory and um I was going to take that, but I guess not.

[00:15:25]Um yeah, so top-down would be like you go from theory and try to find that in the world.

[00:15:31]Um and there's a bottom-up, which is where you take the data and you kind of just go and make your own conclusions from that. So, the trait approaches that I just described, [music] it kind of like takes like all the data that they found and it's like "Okay, we see all these similarities.

[00:15:52]Um maybe all this uh all these similarities Actually, I can't do that.

[00:15:58]Uh maybe all these similarities uh can be like converged into like five or six traits." And that's what the HEXACO and Big Five are.

[00:16:07]Um and there's not a lot of biological components.

[00:16:14]So, like there might be like a bit about like I don't know, genes, like there's not like a specific gene that would be like, "Oh, you have like more extraversion." It's just like, "Man, it's kind of there."

[00:16:28]Uh >> [laughter] >> yeah, it everything's a toss-up, really, which is lovely and all the more reason to study this and figure out like what the hell what the heck is going on.

[00:16:40]Um but yeah.

[00:16:43]And so, right, the Myers-Briggs. I don't know if I mentioned this earlier. I probably did. But I think I did, actually. But Myers-Briggs or MBTI. So, a while back, and I don't know if it's still popular, uh the MBTI 16 personality quizzes were really popular, and I was quite young when I when I did that. Uh I'm I'm an INFP, by the way. Uh and despite them saying that it's very it's quite rare, I all my friends are INFPs, which is great.

[00:17:16]>> [laughter] >> Um but as fun as the 16 personalities quizzes are, they're not actually very scientifically sound. Uh first of all, uh the people who made it uh weren't even psychologists themselves.

[00:17:37]It's very It's very interesting hearing that. I can't lie.

[00:17:41]Um but it was just these two ladies, I believe, who to be fair, they did base it on them like uh I think believe like Carl Jung's Carl Jung Jung Jung's Yeah, I don't know how to say it, but it was based on like uh our guy's Carl Jung's theory, uh which I don't remember which one.

[00:18:04]>> [laughter] >> But it was based on that.

[00:18:06]So, you know, they they did their best.

[00:18:08]I got like I I get that.

[00:18:10]Um However, it's not First of all, they're not psychologists, right? Uh a reason that might be like a bit of an issue is like there's a I don't know about back then when they made the Minds Bridge, but now there's like a a sort of like code Um I don't know about all nations, but at least the way that I'm supposed to uh study psychology, there's a certain way you're supposed to, you know, create theories or create research and all that stuff. And uh We don't know if we if they did that, I guess.

[00:18:47]Um second of all, uh the 16 personalities is not supported by empirical research. So, we don't really it There's not like a lot of like real-world like stuff out there, I guess.

[00:19:03]Um I mean, yeah, that's kind of I I I'm I'm pretty sure that's what that means.

[00:19:12]Uh there's poor validity and reliability. So, validity is like how well it actually measures something. So, judging by what that uh says, it's it doesn't measure personality well, would you believe? And reliability is the reproducibility.

[00:19:33]And if you know psychology, you will know that there is a reproducibility crisis. Where a lot of the research that has been done in like say the 50s to 80s, um yeah, no, we can't we can't get those findings again. It's uh it's great.

[00:19:54]I mean, it's not great.

[00:19:55]Because now it's like, oh no, what have they done to get these results that we can't find and that our research is also based on.

[00:20:06]Um so, yeah, that's that's a bit a bit of a problem. So, the Let me think.

[00:20:14]So, for the the Myers-Briggs to not have good reliability is does not help at all.

[00:20:22]And uh finally, the categories are realistically kind of vague and they're not like very independent [music] of the of each other.

[00:20:32]Um and yeah, these are all the What is it?

[00:20:36]All the criticisms that my lecturer gave out and I'm willing to believe my lecturer because, you know, they all do research.

[00:20:47]>> [laughter] >> Um but yeah, that's why uh 16personalities uh quizzes uh quizzes aren't exactly like uh it's not like really used in the scientific community, I guess.

[00:21:01]Um but yeah, yeah, that's uh yeah, that I've I've gone over Oh, hi.

[00:21:11]Uh but yeah, that's that's my personality uh lectures.

[00:21:17]Lectures? Uh it's only one lecture cuz then the the rest of the topics uh I didn't know if I wanted to cover them because they're Okay, to be fair, I did cover like psychopaths and narcissists, narcissists, but I thought that was more fun. Uh whereas if I were to cover something like Please don't These bloodless people. I I don't I don't know.

[00:21:49]>> [laughter] >> But uh covering stuff like um schizophrenia, which to be fair that it can be quite uh interesting.

[00:22:00]Or like eating disorders or personality disorders even. Um that might hit a bit uh too close to home and I don't want to give people that much discomfort. So, I did I decided, "You know what?
