Melasma is a skin condition driven by heat, hormones, and inflammation, not sun damage, which is why aggressive treatments that stimulate the skin can make it worse; effective management requires strict sun protection, tranexamic acid, and treatments that control heat rather than generate more.

Your Skin Discolouration is Getting Worse.. Here’s WhyAdded:
Stop treating your melasma like it's sun damage. You're making it worse. After 12 years as a laser tech, this is the most mistreated skin condition I see. Melasma isn't just pigment, it's driven by heat, hormones, and inflammation. That's why people that do aggressive treatments see it come back darker because you're stimulating the skin instead of calming it. What actually helps is strict SPF, tranexamic acid, and if you really want to get a good change, hydroquinone. For treatments, you want options that control heat, not create more of it.
This is one of my clients after a series of microneedling and the Fotona StarWalker laser. Here's her progress.
If your pigmentation keeps coming back, it's not random. Follow if you're done guessing with your skin.
