This lesson teaches students to differentiate between commonly confused English words that are pronounced the same but have different spellings and meanings: 'there' (place/location), 'their' (ownership), and 'they're' (contraction of 'they are'); 'where' (place), 'were' (past tense of 'are'), and 'we're' (contraction of 'we are'); 'its' (possession for non-living things) and 'it's' (contraction of 'it is'); 'whose' (ownership) and 'who's' (contraction of 'who is'); and 'affect' (to influence) versus 'effect' (the result). The instructor provides examples and practice exercises to help students correctly use these words in sentences.

And up the hill to eat. To eat the green glass.
>> Good. Fair attempt. Fair attempt. Well done, ma'am.
Thank you.
So we'll continue the reading practice later. Let's go to what we are learning this evening.
Okay. So this evening we are going to look at um by the grace of God today and tomorrow we are going to look at um commonly confused words in English language. Commonally confused words. We are going to look at some of the commonly confused words in English language.
So by the end of this lesson by the end of this lesson you should be able to differentiate between commonly confused words. So that mean what we are going to learn today, what we are learning this evening when you want to write, you should have um confidence, you should be accurate, you you should write better after after this um lesson. The mistake you were making when you don't know these words, you shouldn't make the same mistake after learning um this we about to practice now. So at the by the end of this lesson you should be able to differentiate between commonly confused words. You should be able to use the words um correctly in sentence.
Use the correct word in sentences and of course avoid making the same mistakes we are making before and also improve um spelling and writing accuracy.
So the first one is there the first um set of what we are looking at there the words are pronounced the same but as you can see the spellings are different and the meanings are different. The first one where's my pen? The first one t h e.
The first one t h e r e is when we when we use that word we use it when you want to talk in regard to a location like you want to talk in fact it means place or location.
There t h e r e means a place or a location.
It means a place or a location.
Examples, put the bag over there or I can say put the bag over there on the table. Put the bag over there on the chair.
The um there is a book on the table.
There is a book on the table. The second one t H E I R talks about ownership.
The second uh word we are looking at this evening t h e i r t talks about owner. It means ownership. It means ownership. It it means ownership.
So you want to talk about maybe a family car or a family house or something that belong to a group of people. You want to describe or talk about something that belong to a group of people. Use the word their their house is beautiful.
Their house is big. Their car is um good. You know, use the word their example. Um their house their house is beautiful. Their house is beautiful. Their teacher is kind. Their teacher is kind. Then we have the third one there. This J is the short form of writing they are. The short form of writing they are. So when you see they are just think of they are. In fact it means they are. Yes the pronunciation is the same thing with they but the it just is the short form of writing they are.
So please let's practice these um words and get familiar with them. So when we when you want to write um there t h e r e you should go and write t h e i r. We should not be making that mistake. So the last the third one here they are mean is the full full form of writing they are of or full way of writing they are this the short form this is a full form example they're coming tomorrow as in this sentence I can as well say they are coming tomorrow I can as well say they are coming tomorrow they're coming they're coming tomorrow then Um, they're learning English. They're learning English. I can say they are learning English.
So, we look at um t h e r means a place.
When you want to talk about a place or a location, um t h e i r shows ownership.
Ownership. Y T H E Y apostrophe R E is the short form of writing they are.
Short form of writing they are.
Now the next one is where.
Where? The first one we have here is um W H E R E. Where? The second one is W E R E. Where the third one is w um we e apostrophe r e where where where the first one wh h the first one the first one wh h e r e refer to a place where where where did you where okay where are you going that mean where where are you heading to? Or uh where is your daddy? Where is it's talking about a place where? So w h e r e refers to a place.
Then we have w e r e without apostrophe.
Without apostrophe is the past tense of r. W e w e r e. Please in case we don't understand anything I'm saying when it's question and answer time please feel free to ask question also you can also send the question to our group um our WhatsApp group is so in case um you are not able to get me now you can send it to our WhatsApp group um we e r e is the past of r past of r. Then we have we e apostrophe re e is a short form of writing we are short form of writing we are we are we are going to school example the first one that talked about a place wh h e r e example we where are you going where are you going where is asking you where where you're heading to the Second one, they were happy. They were happy or they were at the party yesterday. They were at the party yesterday.
So here this where here is just past tense of r they were happy. So if you remember if you remove if you remove this um w e r e and put a r e that will be they are happy but person of they are happy is what they were where they were happy.
Then the third one where is um the full form of the short form of writing we are. So we are we are learning grammar.
We are learning grammar. We are learning grammar. That simply means we are learning grammar. We are learning grammar.
So we have wh e r e talks about a place.
We w e w h e r e refers to a place.
We e r we e r e is the past tense of r while we e apostrophe r e is the short form of writing we are we are happy we are we are going to school we are here.
The next one we are looking at it's it's with apostrophe and without apostrophe.
It's it's it's the first one without apostrophe its talks about possession. Possession and this it can be used for things. You want to make a sentence now about things non-living things you use it. And also you can use it for animals. Okay, you want to say oh the elephant um ears are so big and say its ears are so big. So um its is used for non-living things and also um animals. Example and is possession of possession. EXAMPLE THE DOG wag tail the dog.
The dog The dog wagged its tail. The dog wagged its tail.
The second one. Okay. No. So, change the company um the company change it. Okay.
The second one. The change it name. The company changed its name. You know company is not a living thing.
The company change it name.
The second one it's with apostrophe it t apostrophe s it t apostrophe s is the short form of writing it is or it has it is or it has example it's rainy it's rainy that's it is rainy I can say it's rainy or I can say it is rainy the second one is um it's been a long day it's been a long day that's same way of saying It's It's been a long day.
Okay.
So, the next one is who's whose whose The first one.
The first one talked about ownership. W H O S E W H O S E whose Whose is talked about ownership. Ownership. Whose bag is this? Whose pen is this? Whose house is this? Whose is this? While the second one, H O H O apostrophe S.
H O apostrophe of S is the short form of writing who is or who has who is or who has examples for the first one H wh that talks about ownership example whose pen is this whose pen is this that mean who does this pen belong to who does this pen belong to the second one is um is a short form that's wh apostrophe s is the short form of writing who is or who has example who is calling who's calling who's calling who's calling that's who is calling who is calling another example is who's your teacher who's your teacher that's simp that's to say Who is your teacher?
Who is your teacher? So wh o e talked about ownership.
Wh talked about ownership.
Why? W H O apostrophe S is the short form of writing who is or who has.
So the next one is um a effect and effect. Affect and effect. So when do we use effect?
We use effect when you're making a sentence to inference something. Let me assume taking too much drug will affect you on the long run or um taking alcohol will affect your um liver or kidney or whatever. If I say if I'm saying taking a call will affect your that mean if you do particular thing it will make this thing to happen that's when you use effect why effect is the result let me assume the person have taken alcohol taken out now last he now has um a kidney kidney issue so you want to make a sentence use effect the effect effect of the alcohol he has consumed over Yes. has caused his kidney to fail.
That the the end result. Why um effect is before the thing happen? Effect is before uh the thing happen. Why effect is the result of someone doing uh wrong thing. So example effect. EXAMPLE, THAT'S A f e c. A ff ect c. Example, rain affects traffic. Rain affects traffic.
Stress affect memory.
Excuse me. Stress affects memory. The second one, e f ect.
E f ect. That's results. like results when something has happened because of example the medicine had a good effect.
The medicine had a good effect.
Exercise has a positive effect. So when you exercise you will be healthy. Exercise has positive effect.
Again effect a effect is to inference while effect is result. Effect is result okay I've already said that u effect okay effect is um action effect is end result.
So this analysis can help us to remember this. Effect is the action the process.
Effect is the action. Effect is the action or the process. Why effect is the end result.
Effect end result. A action. Um effect end result.
Okay. Quickly let's um you write this sentence out with this sentence have mistake in them. Our classwork, our classwork. This sentence we have here, these five sentences have mistakes in them. You are going to write the sentence with the proper words. You are going to in fact the instructions say correct this mistakes.
Correct the mistake. Correct the mistake. So write the sentence with the proper words, the correct words.
So we have okay 1 minute no we have 3 minutes to do that 3 minutes to do that.
Write the sentence with the proper correct words.
Are we through?
I believe we are true now.
Are we through?
I can see some people writing. Please, if you are through say um say say yes in the comment section the chat. Use the chat um area please. If you are true, are we true?
If you are true, say yes. Just say yes in the chat session.
Okay. And I'm Safia is true.
Okay. Infinence is true. Okay. Okay.
Good.
So, it's very simple. Thank you. Thank you for those that respond.
Thank you. So, the first one.
So the first one, let's uh look at what we've written. I believe I I know all of us will get it because it's quite simple. The first one, the answer is uh it's not supposed to be this there. It's not this one.
What's supposed to be is um t h e y y apostrophe r apostrophe r e okay they are going home they are going home so please look at what you've written they are going home and then number two number too is not it's um it's the it supposed to have a apostrophe the it let me erase this the it supposed to have apostrophe I T apostrophe S it's a beautiful day it's A beautiful day. That's it is a beautiful day. It is a beautiful day. Then the next one number three is number three is who is coming. So is wh Okay. No one wh apostrophe s. That's the answer. Who is coming today? Who is coming today?
Who is coming today?
on it.
And the number four is the past tense of a. We were happy yesterday. We were happy. So there's not supposed to be apostrophe.
Number four, there's not supposed to be apostrophe.
There's not supposed to be apostrophe in number four. Why? Number five, what you need to change there is um it's not supposed to be effect. It's supposed to be effect.
Um I hope the correction is clear. The first the first one the answer is there. They are you know we put apostrophe then so it can be there. there. T H E Y apostrophe R E. That's number one.

There this is um we have different three spellings here but the pronunciation is there. Then we have um where we have three spelling but the pronunciation is where where >> we learned it. It the one with apostrophe the one without apostrophe it.
We learned whose whose we learned effect and effect. So those words we learned those words are showing that you are picking from those words to um you are picking from those words.
>> Okay.
>> To Yes. To complete the sentence. You pick from those words to complete the sentence.

So, I want some other people to give me um their answer, then I'm going to do the correction. Well done, sir.
>> Okay. Thank you.
>> Yes sir.
So, I'm expecting us now just type in the comment section, I mean the chat chat session uh your answer. Number one, just you don't have to write the whole sentence. Number one you write number one you write um the um either is it you write number two if it's it you write number three if it's it you write just like that one to six.
Okay. Uh Madame Jum say who where affect effect. Madame Jum you number what number that uh number four is what?
Good. No madame J. Well done. You got um four five and six.
You got um so you say where which is we e r e we e apostrophe r e where at the door that's we are at the door correct number five effect uh noise can affect learning correct number six the effect of medicine correct so you got um four five and six I didn't see one to three Okay. One and two. You didn't send one and two. Okay. Um, who else is there?
Madame favor, you are sending everything. Don't just send me one. Um, Zion, you are sending one to six. Not one. Some people are just sending one.
No, we are to send you to do number one to six. Do number one to six. Um, who do I have here now? Um, Madame Zenab. Madame Zenab. one time. So number one, Madame Zamb, it's correct.
That's it. Apostrophe S. That's correct.
Um, number two, day. No, number two is not is wrong.
Number two is wrong. Madame Zam, number three. Who's Who's number three?
No. Number three is WHO'S THAT'S W H O S E. Madame Zenab. Number three is W H O S E. Number three is wrong what you've written. Number four, what is covering this.
Number four, sorry, something's covering the this thing. Okay.
No, number four is is not correct. Is wrong.
Um which other one do I have there? Then number five. Number five and six is correct. Well done. I I can see that we understand number five and six very well because almost all of us are getting it. Well done.
Okay. Technop 10.
Wow.
Number number one is that's it T apostrophe s correct number two NUMBER NUMBER ONE SORRY NUMBER ONE THERE'S NO apostrophe um techno technop 10 number 10 number one number one there's no apostrophe number one there's no apostrophe that's it's supposed to be its there's NO APOSTROPHE WHY NUMBER TWO THERE'S supposed to be apostrophe just like um it is Very cold. Okay. Number two there. So um that's P 10 techn 10.
Number two is correct. Number three.
Number three.
Number three is correct.
Number four is correct. Number Good job.

Let's do the correction. Let me do correction. Well done. Good job those that responded. Um, well done. SO, NUMBER ONE. NUMBER one is um the cat cleaned it. That's I Please stop writing on my screen now.
Please, please, pretty please stop writing on my screen.
Let's just focus and finish. My baby is already calling me.
It's that I have to write it. So, is it T S it? Then number two. Number two, it has apostrophe.
it.
I will remove you. Who is that? I think is it Yabbo? Who? I don't stop right on my screen. Please, please. Now, please if your phone is your baby, your children, remove it from them.
Um, so number two, we have it apostrophe.
Apostrophe S. It's just like saying um it is very cold today. It is very cold today. SO NUMBER ONE DOES not have apostrophe. Number two has apostrophe.
Excuse me.
So number three, whose notebook is this?
Whose notebook is it? That's W H O. Ah, the thing is not showing to it. W H O Please don't mind my writing. The space is small so I need to manage it.
Whose notebook is this? Then the sec the number four is um who's that's w o apostrophe s that's who's at the door that's who is at the door number four number four who who is at the door so the as regarding what we learn today we have who's at the door who's at door is the same same as who is at the door uh number Five. Here is effect affect. Um where is the A? That is A F E C T.
Why number five is effect.
Okay. So, well done for those of us that got it. Well done. For those of us that um made the mistake of one or two, well done. Good job. Making mistake is part of learning. So, it's okay. I believe when we see this or when we are writing now, we will not make the same mistake.
In fact, it's good for us to make mistake here than when we want to write send message to um to someone or send message to our boss and we are making mistake. So, let's do the next let's go for the next practice. I I hope we've gotten that like you've seen the correction. Um so, quickly let's do this together again quickly. Uh, what is missing? That's going to Lagos tomorrow.
That's going to Lagos tomorrow. Dash car is parked outside. The loud music did not dash me. The engine had a good dash. The dog wagged dash tail. So, what's the answer? What's the answer?
Let's from what we've learned so far.
Um, from what we've learned so far, just um, that's one to five. Write the answers and send to the chat.
The chat um, use the chat area. Use the chat area to send your answer. I'm waiting.
So, what are we supposed to write here?
What's missing here?
What's missing here?
Let's do it together. Let's do it together.
Okay, I can see our answers are coming in.
Okay.
Okay.
said the first one eats. The second one eats. Okay.
The third one we This thing is blocking me. Okay.
Okay. Um well done chima. Now the first one it's it's it has apostrophe.
It has apostrophe like it is going to Lagos tomorrow. I can say I can say the dog is going to Lagos tomorrow. I can say it's going to Lagos tomorrow.
Okay. Let me not say the answer now.
Some of I'm sure some of us are still brainstorming brainstorming the answer.
So let's keep the answers coming in. Um Madame Chima, well done. You made mistake number with number one. Uh number two, number two is correct.
Number three.
No, number three is is not correct.
Madame Chidima, number four.
No, number four is not correct either.

Number three. Where is it?
Okay. Number three is correct.
Number four is correct. Number no, number five. You're supposed to add S.
Now, Madame Chinaza, you're supposed to add S. So well done Madame Chinaza.
Um I can see some some people are sending one one answered. We have five question. Just send the five at once.
Don't be sending one one. Please send the five. Don't send one one. Uh, Madame Zenam. Um, number one. Okay.
Number two.
>> Okay. Number three.
>> Number four.
Where is this thing?
Good. Madame Zenam, well done. You made mistake with number.
Okay. No, you you you are you are on the good track. Well done, ma'am. Well done, Madam Zen.
Yeah.
Okay. Okay, let me give the correction together now. Please give me a minute.
Sweet.
Okay.
Okay. So, number one, well done for those that responded. Well done. Good job. some of us uh did well why some of us made mistake remember making mistake is part of our learning part of learning so it's okay um number one number one it can be it's going to lo tomorrow that mean if you are talking with regard to animal okay so you can your if you if you've written it it it's going to Lagos tomorrow. That's correct. Without um with the apostrophe, it's going to No, no, no, no.
Okay. No, no, no, no. So, the answer for number one is there there that there is I'm I will still write it now. I'm just um something's by I'm going to write it down. That's W um T H E Y apostrophe R E. They they are going to Lagos tomorrow. They are going to Lagos tomorrow. That there is t h t h number one. The answer for number one is t h e y apostrophe r e t h e y apostrophe r e.
Why number two?
Whose um dash car is parked outside? So whose car is parked outside? Whose car is parked outside? And the whose is wh um wh o.
So I will write it now so we can see for those of us that need to see with the writing number one. Let me quickly write it. Sorry. Um C H E Y apostrophe R E. Um number two.
Um who's who the who is wh h o s e whose car is parked outside. Um, number three, the music, the loud music did not affect me.
Affect that's um, a ff a ff t a ff c. This is e. Then the medicine had a good effect. effect. Uh number four is effect.
Number four is effect.
Then number five, the doors it it tail. The dog wagged its tail. So this is the correction for those of mistake.
Let's take notes. For those of us that got everything well, awesome. Good job.
So let's go to the next one.
Okay. The answer is even here. Okay. So the first one here is what we did.
That's what we have here. So okay quickly our assignment our assignment homework. So um we have these words here. We have there, we have there, we have where, where, its, whose, whose, affect, effect. You are going to write um two sentences for each of these words. You write two sentence for each.
Please before you submit your assignment, your your assignment. Please write the instruction and write today's date. Write the instruction. Don't just write um blank. Don't just submit your assignment like that. Please write today's date. Write the assignment.
write the instruction and do the assignment. If you HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTION, PLEASE or anything not clear to you, please you can send to the WhatsApp group. So tomorrow by the grace of God, I will respond. If you have any question or anything is not clear to you, please send it to the uh send to our um uh WhatsApp group.
So let use one minute to write this.
Let's use one minute to write this.
