A compelling synthesis of sociology and history that strips away the supernatural to reveal the raw vulnerability of the human psyche under systemic collapse. It effectively frames historical "madness" as a tragic physical manifestation of an unbearable social environment.

Dance Yourself to Death pt.2Added:
So, authorities made the dancing plague worse by adding a live band. Cool. Great call, guys. Eventually, someone did have another idea. Maybe this isn't a hot blood problem, but a Saint Vitus problem. St. Vitus being the patron saint associated with dancing, epilepsy, and a lot of nervous conditions. The thinking was he had cursed them. So, they did what you do when a saint curses your city. They found some religious prosecutions. They banned music. They banned public dancing and they marched the afflicted to a shrine while, you know, dousing them with holy water. The breakout did fade though. And the thing is, the shrine definitely didn't fix it, but stopping the music probably did because the most compelling explanation I found is that it isn't a curse, but a ma a mass psychological illness.
Basically, an instance of mass hysteria.
In 1518, Straber was not having a good time. There was famine, disease, and economic collapse. So generations of people were living under unrelenting and inescapable stress with zero outlet and zero framework to process it. And sometimes when the pressure hits a breaking point, the body just goes not metaphorically but literally uh uncontrollable movement, disassociated stress uh and physical symptoms with no real physical cause. And it spreads because humans are deeply and unavoidably social creatures. Fraopia didn't start the dance party. She just broke first and then everyone else who was already on the edge broke with her.
The dancing was never the problem. It was the symptom. and breaking the pattern.
