In autonomous communities like Slab City, freedom is not absolute but comes with responsibility—individuals are free to act as they choose, but must accept the consequences of their actions and respect others' autonomy. The concept of 'the last free place' refers to the ability to occupy land and live according to one's own principles without government interference, though this freedom is contextual and depends on not impeding others' freedom. True freedom requires personal accountability and community respect, as there is no external authority to shield individuals from the results of their choices.

The Last Free Place??Added:
Uh, another stream. Hi. What's up?
I'm going to do a bit more of a philosophical thought process today.
Um, so, yeah. And also, you might notice I'm wearing kind of a weird outfit. Um, it's hot. It's not like crazy hot. In here, it's like 95°, which is, you know, pretty cool. The, you know, just outside, it's like 100°.
Um, so, I've got this uh, cool like sheer, really light material.
And, uh, you know, I kind of tied it like a like a sari, almost. It's really comfy.
Um, but I've also been working on other stuff. This is the time of year when fashion choices start to get uh, a little bit interesting because it's not about fashion at this point.
It's just about like being as comfortable as possible when it's really, really hot. So, yeah, this is the time of year when people's outfits start looking kind of crazy and wasteland-y or, you know, whatever.
Um, but, yeah, anyway, how's everybody doing?
Nice to see you.
Um, I wanted to talk about freedom. What is freedom? In the In what does the last free place mean? What is that?
Um, people have called Slab City the last free place. I think, uh, I think Builder Bill accredited that saying to Mike Brett. I want to say, I might be wrong. I might be misremembering, but I think that's uh, it was coined then. And, you know, it it means something, but also it doesn't.
Like, what does that mean? That's kind of a broad statement. I think it was more meant to make you think.
Um, and there's been a lot of people, um, new folks here in slabs that are like, you know, what what does that mean? What does it mean to be free in a society like this.
Um So, I thought I'd explore the concept and uh maybe some folks in chat have their own ideas or ideals about what freedom means and what freedom in Slab City looks like. Um Yeah.
But, before I get into it, I'm going to take a look at who's in the chat. What's up, Zoe and Louisiana guy?
And Aaron, what's up? Shake the stars from the sky, how you doing? Hell yeah.
Hell yeah.
Nice to see y'all. So, for those of you who don't know, maybe you're just passing through, scrolling on live whatever, I don't know. Um I'm Cornelius and I built and run Slab City Library. And uh yeah, I'm in Slab City. My trailer, it's easy to to think that I might not be in Slab City. This is a pretty decent-looking trailer until you look a little harder and you realize it's been [ __ ] torn apart. Um I'm working on repairing it and making it really nice, but that has been a problem um just in having the things to work with and restoring it back to um I mean, it's not going to be restored back to the way it was. It's going to be restored differently, but sustainable for the heat. And uh one of those ways that I'm doing that is I'm trying to raise money for a good [ __ ] battery bank. Um right now I'm running off of some marine boat batteries and that that's fine. Um But, there's really limited capabilities with that. Um so, I do have a GoFundMe link in the description there for getting proper power back in the library. Um cuz I'm I'm really hitting a wall.
You know, I've uh I've been working with trash and salvage and just trying to piece together a basic system. And that's that's worked for the last year, but it's it's just not cutting it anymore.
Um, so it's time to upgrade. So, if anybody wants to help, I set the goal at 4K, but like whatever amount is raised over the next few weeks, I can work with that. I'll figure it out.
Uh, Dave says, I always tell people the best thing about slabs is you're free to do whatever you want. The worst thing about slabs is you're free to do whatever you want.
Yeah. Well, that's the thing like um, you know, if if you're in a place where everyone is autonomous and you respect their autonomy and their own sovereignty over the space that they occupy, then your freedoms and where they're impeding on other people's freedoms. So, there was a conversation the other day about some people wanting to be free to let their dogs roam around slabs and not know where they are and you know, they're they're trying to argue like, oh, well, if it's so free around here, why can't I just let my dogs loose? Well, you know, and then other people are like saying um, you know, like I thought this place was a free place. Like I can't even walk down the street the public street without being chased down by people's dogs because they're not controlling their dogs and they don't know where their dogs are. That's a real conundrum, right? Cuz like you know, yeah, like sure, you're you're free to be inconsiderate and not care about the impact that you have on your community, but that has consequences. And sometimes you're responsible for people being hurt because of your negligence.
So, it's like you know, you're you're as free as you can handle being, I guess. Um and like Dave said, sometimes you know, like or at least implied with that, like the worst thing about slabs is that you're free to do whatever you want.
That means that you are not free from consequences. Being free does not mean you are free from consequences.
Um and being free means that you are responsible for your actions and the consequences for your actions. There's not you know, there's no Big Brother or or, you know, some some force uh or set of rules that are going to like you know, shield you from the consequences.
Um and it's uh it's uh it's interesting. I think uh yeah, the the term the last free place in reference to slabs was kind of more one of those statements that that is meant to um mhm get you thinking. Uh it's like I said, it's a it's a general statement. Like, what what does that actually mean? You know, like what is freedom?
And why would this be the last free place? And some say, you know, like this is the last place where you can settle for free and um you know, like you're you're free to occupy a space that isn't already occupied and you're free to build something to live in. You know, it's it's not like you come here and then everything is free to you.
Um you're free to to do with what you have what you will do. Um as long as it doesn't impede on anyone else's freedom or, you know, encroach or disturb or cause a problem for other people. Um, so like you know, for for example, let's say somebody comes to slabs and they really like their their top priority is that they want to be able to shoot guns whenever they want and have a [ __ ] ton of dogs running free and you know, that type of thing. Like there is space for that, but you can't move into a crowded area where there's tons of people around you and then expect to have those freedoms because there's other people around you.
You need to work within that community and respect people around you. But if you started a camp way out far away from everybody, um, you know, and your your dogs need to stay in near your area and not chase after people. Um, like there's no problem with that. Uh, you know, it's it's about context as well. Like you know, you don't want to you don't want to put other people in danger.
But nobody wants anybody to not be free to do what they want.
Um, anyway.
Every action has a reaction whether good bad or indifferent. That's right.
Oh, man.
Why am I Why am I tired?
I need some water.
Mhm.
Yeah, the water filtration system is going really great.
Um, yeah.
Now I'm just working on power. So, that's the other thing that's that should be free. Water and power. I think water and power should be free for everybody. Those are just resources that are in the world. And as far as power goes, you know, it's literally coming from the sky. There's free unlimited power coming from the sky. There's no reason why we shouldn't be able to collect it um and use it. So, that's why I'm trying to get a good power system going.
Um and water should be free, too.
Most people around here pay for water.
Um I acquire it.
And I filter it in my kitchen.
And also free here as far as the library is free distribution of books and educational materials. I think that's really important. Um there's a lot of free stuff in slabs. Um it's not hard to be here and not have to spend hardly any money. There's food drops. There's free clothes. There's dog food. All sorts of stuff. Um But that can also be revoked. There was a situation where someone was caught stealing.
Um and now they're not allowed to utilize the free food. And >> [laughter] >> that's that's a consequence.
Um you know, you Now what?
That was That was his main source of food and he stole from from them. Um so, yeah, it's a kind of that that old saying, "Don't [ __ ] where you eat."
Almost like quite literally in this case.
But um I'm not saying it the the name of this person on my channel, but among the community, um nobody's hiding this person. Like everybody's aware that this is a situation and we're working on like what to do as a community and standing in solidarity with each other. If there is somebody that is known to be stealing from other people then there's there's no reason to help or protect them.
And at this time of year at slabs if you've burned all your bridges like that it's damn near impossible to survive out here through the summer.
Don't bite the hand that feeds you.
Yeah, literally though. Literally.
What's up Daniel Bryerly? How you doing?
And Rob K, what's up? Haven't seen you in a minute.
I hope you're well.
Louisiana guy says I'm selling my home here. That's cool. Hell yeah, dude.
Oh, man.
I'm like I think it's just cuz it's hot.
It's making me really low energy and my brain's just like not not moving as quickly as it usually is.
I'm a little dumb.
It's not even like I mean it's in here it's 94.8 now and I got the fan behind me pulling in cool air. There's a hole in the bathroom there and it's not cute.
I usually put a board over it and just like step over it, but right now the the air that gets pushed under the trailer gets really cool because it's being like forced under there along the ground that's really cool under that solid shade and if I open up the little holes in the floor, it kind of seeps into here and I can pull it in.
Outside just like right outside is probably about 100°.
Daniel says I'm good, hon. How are you?
Tell me more. I am I'm here.
We're chilling.
JC Moses Law says, "Hey Corn and Corn fans, what's up?" How you doing, man?
Dave says, "I wish I could help out corn. Black Beast is in the shop as we speak." Hell yeah, dude. You got to take care of your yourself and your equipment to be a more effective um you know, in in the collaborative efforts uh on this front for the the war for the minds of the people, you know, that's where we're at right now. We've got all these world governments trying to beat us all into submission.
And Slab City is obviously a stronghold for free thinkers. Um and we're all in this fight together.
Dave's a comrade and there's plenty of other comrades here. Um And and I use the word comrade. I'm not a communist.
I'm an anarchist, but I do appreciate certain uh rhetoric. I think it's uh efficient.
Um but yeah, you got to you got to make sure you take care of yourself first.
Don't burn out and then you can come back and and join the the fray.
Rob cases thanks, doing good. Hell yeah, good to hear it, dude.
Dave says, "I'll be back on the road.
Blessing broke down nomad soon."
Hell yeah, dude.
I look forward to it. Godspeed and and I hope everything goes well with the Black Beast.
Mhm. I got some strong coffee here. It's so weird like I'm so tired and and derpy right now, but I got I made the strongest [ __ ] cup of coffee. Holy [ __ ] It's like jet fuel.
Whew. Just black. Black like my soul.
Mhm.
Hey, what up, yard buzzard? How you doing?
[ __ ] yeah.
Um I was kind of just ranting about freedom. Um then I forgot what I was talking about.
I got I guess you know, that's the overlying theme of of my rant chill sesh today.
Um freedom, what is it? What does it mean?
Um where do my freedoms end and yours begin?
You know, um and what is the the last free place? What does that mean?
Anybody got what I for the folks that have never been to Slab City that know what Slab City is. Like what is your impression of freedom here? And what do you think the last free place means in this context?
Anybody?
How many philosophers do we got in chat today? I'm dressed like a [ __ ] old school philosopher for some reason, I guess. It's comfy. I'm comfy.
This is going to be my my summer outfit, man. Hell yeah. Here, check this out.
Do a fit check.
Fit check, yeah. Hey, looks good though, right?
It's cozy.
I feel like I need like a scroll or something and to be like having some type of philosophical discourse in a courtyard.
I'm going to learn a bunch more ways to tie this thing, too.
No Matt Julia says, "Hey Corn and everyone. Love what Love that when I catch a live." Hell yeah.
Aaron says, "I just had an iced coffee from McDonald's. It was good. Haven't had one in a while."
Thanks, Julie. Appreciate that.
Mhm.
There was an interview that I did uh uh for a documentary a while ago. I think it was off the cuff or something. I was [ __ ] blasted out my head when I did this.
But, I watched it. I was like, I don't remember saying any of this, but I was [ __ ] I was cooking, dude.
>> [laughter] >> Um I think the the closing statement that I made was like somebody asked me um to explain what that means, whether this is the last free place.
And I said something to the extent of um like, well, I guess I'm free to occupy land that they don't want in a hostile environment. I guess that's freedom.
Or something like that. Like, they've only left us the least desirable land, just like they they've done and did and still do to native people of this land.
Just displacing them in putting them in the shittiest, most challenging environments. And over and over again, they survive and thrive. And that's so inspiring to me.
Um And they yeah, they just they're they're not leaving space for for the rest of us.
It's all going to be owned and taxed and with their laws and their rules and their social expectations.
They don't Like, if people want to live like that, great, you know, they should be free to do that. But, I should be free to not do that. And my freedom to live how I want should never be impeded. Um Otherwise, that's just control. That's that's inherently fascist. If they're not leaving anywhere for people to live how they want to, that's that's absolute control. That's tyranny.
You know, in in in in other countries, they're they're making laws so that people who have been nomadic for hundreds, maybe thousands of years, can no longer travel the way that their ancestors did.
The Arctic Ocean adventure was epic.
Have you been back since that bus trip?
No, I haven't. I've been wanting to go back to to Alaska. Um if I didn't get stuck in LA for so long, and I had had a new prosthetic leg made, then I I definitely was uh strongly thinking about going to Alaska.
Aaron says, "You should give us a tutorial on how to tie your fit." I'll do that another day. I'll do uh like desert garb or something once I've got a few more outfits built. I've got a few more outfits that I've been working on that that are just comfy and easy to wear.
Feel like not wearing anything.
Earthworker 2 says, "Nobody free in this country." Nobody is re Well, you know, that's that's the thing. Um like the chain the shackles are in our minds.
Um and and this country and this society only exists if a certain percentage of people believe that it exists and validate it. They don't need all of us.
They just need I don't even think most of us. Like I you know, like a certain percentage. And once the people's minds reach that critical mass where we've collectively decided that these ways are no longer relevant and that we don't participate in that system, then it dissipates.
Um but as long as there's enough people that still believe in that system and that that system is the way that everything operates and must operate, then it will continue.
Meanwhile, the rest of us are out here living our lives and you know, just holding the line for freedom. And you don't have to do what I do or what Dave does even or what a number of other people do. There's there's so many different ways that freedom can look.
Like you can totally live on grid, but you know, [ __ ] the system enough that you're able to grow crops in your little suburban yard and distribute them freely or or call neighborhood meetups and and do little acts of resistance like barbecuing with a whole ton of people to talk about, you know, what's going on in your neighborhood and how you can improve it or just meeting people and getting out there. Um and yeah, just just getting outside of your your your role as a cog in the machine because you're so much more than that and your time is worth so much more than that.
The chains are in your mind, man.
Unleash your yourself.
Is that a toga? Kind of.
Steve Rogers says freedom from rent, but maybe not from federal and state law.
Yeah, yeah, there's a you know, there's a lot of a lot of freedoms, but still not other freedoms that that would be nice. But you know, the the state and federal legal system still does encroach upon us and it does impede a lot of things, actually.
Because it's in their interest to keep Slab City shitty and destabilized.
Um So, you know, the sometimes the best resistance that you can you can do is just to get people together um and talk face-to-face as a group, as a community, and develop that community.
Electricity should be free. [ __ ] yeah.
Y'all Y'all could be running most of your stuff on solar power. You could be like on grid on paper.
But, you know, uh set up a a cheap solar power system and power most of your stuff.
Uh I mean, you know, cut down on a lot of cost. The it I don't know if they've got laws in place already so that you can't do that. But, like, how are they going to know if you just like have your solar power system and all of the stuff that like you know, it takes the most draw throughout the day, you can just switch over to your solar.
And just, you know, use your your lights and indoor wiring for basic stuff.
Or, you know, [ __ ] high high draw stuff like stuff in the kitchen or whatever.
I don't know. There's ways you can you can mitigate that. You can You can definitely save a lot of money.
Cuz [ __ ] all that. And even the way that power structures are set up, it's like just so like so ridiculous. The types of things that people are used to running all the time really unnecessary. It takes an insane amount of power.
It's just keeping you keeping you dependent on the grid.
T1 TI says Diogenes is the philosopher lived in a wine barrel and he ate scraps and never bathed. Told Alexander the Great to stay out of his light. Yeah, I'm a big fan of Diogenes. I think he lived in a wash barrel though.
And he ate primarily onions.
Before he would eat scraps and all sorts of stuff, but then he found out that he could survive solely on onions so he switched to those.
Yeah.
Interesting fellow.
Oh yeah, if anybody wants to help out with the fundraiser for power, there is a link in the description that's at the top.
Speaking of power, I need to put a different battery in my fan here.
Right now I'm running the the power off of my little EcoFlow. I've got a huge mess over here of electronic components that I was working with and I ordered some new stuff.
I destroyed possibly two inverters.
But I I figured out what my issue is.
I talked to my my friend who gave me some insight so I can um and I realized that in order to run the type of system that I need to run, that I need to raise at least two grand for good batteries, but I set the goal to four grand just in case and in that case I can get like a serious battery bank. But you know, even even a few bucks like helps.
If nothing else, I've got a backup plan for, you know, throwing what I can to augment the battery bank that I have, double that, and then just go with that. It's not going to be enough to do the things that I want to do, but it'll be enough to do a lot of other things.
Patty says, "Did you hear 50,000 Lake Tahoe residents may not have power by the year 2027 because the utility companies are talking about not serving them since profits are higher if they sell to AI data centers." Yeah.
Yeah, I did.
It's pretty [ __ ] up.
Earth Worker 2 says, "Fuck data centers." Hell yeah, [ __ ] data centers.
Yeah, they're destroying everything really fast. Like it's uh it's a pretty alarming rate.
Um Like I don't hate AI in and of itself. I don't think like AI is inherently bad, but it's like, you know, I don't think that meat eating meat is inherently bad. Like it it is it's not it's not good, but it's just like, you know, something that that is a thing. You know, there's there's responsible meat eating where you're going for wild game or ethically raised stuff, but like the industry the industry is [ __ ] evil.
So, I you know, I I don't always like if if something's free, I'm not paying for it, especially if it's like dumpster diving or whatever. Nobody's benefiting from me not eating that.
Um it's just going to go to waste, but I'm not going to go buy any Tyson meats or anything like that, for example.
They're spraying Tahoe like crazy, too.
I I Yeah, they're they're spraying glyphosate up there.
It's [ __ ] up, man.
Yeah, it's it's bad.
It's really bad. A lot of people are like, "Oh, I want to prep for the apocalypse." I'm here to tell you, I don't know who needs to hear this, but we're in it. We are in the apocalypse.
The thing is, you know, the apocalypse is a lot more complicated than it looks in the movies where it's like, "Oh, no, there's a meteor and it's coming right for us." And then it's like and then like all of a sudden it's the apocalypse and then it's the the after times.
That's not how that's not how it really works. You know, the the impacts of an apocalypse are going to hit certain sectors of society first before it hits you.
Because, you know, chances are you're not in the lowest uh the least advantaged area of humanity.
Um cuz that's, you know, that's a few people. But then there's, you know, there's levels to that. So, wherever you're at, that that is going to hit you, too. That sonic blast is coming on out and the sooner people are aware of that, like if we can negate that blast before it hits and rocks through the entirety of humanity, we might have a fighting chance, you know? So, it's like try and think outside of your privilege.
Just because you're comfortable now and you're you're feeling like, you know, things are okay.
And if you just, you know, if if if everything just stays how it is, you'll be fine and you'll get through it, but it's not going to. It's going to keep getting worse.
You know, you got to wake up and and take action. The sooner we withdraw from the system, the better.
Um and one way that a lot of people are are saying is drawing all your money out of the banks.
And, you know, I would say switch to a credit union or something.
Um and also just mostly deal in cash.
That would [ __ ] the the oligarchs quite a bit. Um and not not oligarchs, I mean it's uh What's the uh corporatocracy or whatever that the corpos, the [ __ ] filthy corpos, man. We want to [ __ ] we want to neutralize them.
And they feed on capital.
So, if we can keep as much of it out of their hands as possible, we can destabilize them.
AI in the wrong hands, which is inevitable, can only be detrimental to society.
Yes.
If you can't be connected to an electrical grid, then you can have an off-grid solar system. If you live in Babylon, then you can't disconnect from the utilities. I'm not saying disconnect from the utilities. Just leave it. Just don't use them.
Get get a [ __ ] battery bank and some solar panels and you know, you can get a something low-key that you know, nobody would really notice, like a Jackery or an EcoFlow.
And, you know, after a while it'll pay for itself.
Um and just like run some of the things on it.
And, you know, you can save a lot of money on your power bill. Um but you don't you don't have to disconnect. Just do it like, you know, on on the sly.
They don't need to know.
I'm sure there's other ways to put a little monkey wrench into the system as well.
Patty says it's really bad, hate it.
I agree. What's with our daily new with what's our daily news, we are definitely doomed. Sorry, got to go. We're not doomed. They want us to think that we're doomed, but you know, the sooner the rest of society realizes the severity of the situation and withdraws from participation in the machine, as it were, the more of a fighting chance we have.
I don't know if um if humans are are at that level yet, though. At least, you know, a certain amount of them.
Oh, man.
Aaron posted a link to my um fundraiser for power in the library. If we can get some decent battery banks, then we'll have unlimited free power here. And I would love to be able to provide power for other Slabbers, too, so they can come here and plug in and be able to use the Wi-Fi uh during certain hours of the day, cuz I remember back when I first came to Slab City, uh the internet cafe was a huge huge [snorts] asset to me. Um and that's when I was starting to make videos and starting to do um do YouTube.
It was pivotal. So, and now that we don't really have that here, so, you know, I don't I don't have any interest of like recreating the internet cafe or becoming the internet cafe, but this is a a public library and there typically a public library will have places to plug in and and Wi-Fi. So, why not?
Moses Slaughter says, "The issue with AI and many other things is that they didn't start with regulations agreements to ensure the environment and people aren't getting hurt.
They held {slash} hold so much power that they I think uh I think there's more coming there.
Steve Rogers says the apocalypse is a train wreck in slow motion. It happens little by little until at some point everybody realizes it's upon them. Yeah, and by that point it's it's well beyond the point of no return. Like at that point it's too late.
And we're we're beyond the the tipping point for sure.
Like at this rate um there scientists are saying with the way that the environment is um at and and many other things um we're looking at like a a significant percentage of our species being wiped out in the next decade or two.
And that is that's just that's just science. Um so it's like we're past the point where we need to like dial up our our reaction and response to that.
If aliens took over we would make great pets.
Yeah, I wouldn't mind being somebody's pet. You know, assuming the aliens are like not evil as well.
I don't know.
Maybe there's a lot of different types of aliens and some of them are evil and some of them are good and some of them are complicated, you know?
Who knows?
If aliens make me their pet I'm going to [ __ ] on the carpet.
And they'll they'll pat you on the head and be like, "Do you want to go to the hiking trail? The one you like really really a lot? And I'll bring your favorite protein bars." And you'll be like, "Okay."
And they'll clean up your human poop and like, you know, consult their vet about this recurring issue.
I don't know. It would It would be kind of cool to like not have to worry about all this [ __ ] and be like, "Look, there's smarter beings that are taking care of all the rest." Like how Satan, you know, Satan doesn't worry about Satan.
She doesn't worry about what's going on.
She knows that I'll take care of it. Hi, baby. Hi, baby. Do you want a treat, pup?
Do you want a treat?
Got a little nugget.
Little nugget for my nugget. Come here.
Up.
Mwah.
Be be be be be.
You're so cute, Satan.
Do you want this?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Ooh. Yes.
Oh, I see. Yeah.
They held so much power that they are destroying whole communities, depleting their water sources like the oil companies did. Oh, yeah.
Yep, it's a huge resource grab.
They want to grab as much as they can before enough people realize what's going on and put a stop to it. Because if we do, then their plans aren't going to pan out the way that they want them to.
Um so, that's also why it's like imperative for people to like wake the [ __ ] up. And I will say it that like most of the internet at this point is bots.
Um so when you're looking over like comment sections of certain things and you're like, "Wow, so many people are still so in the dark. They're so stupid." Just know like that is manufactured. That's a That's a manufactured thing. They want you to think that everybody else is still stuck as well.
Um so that you'll be disheartened and you'll think that that we're doomed.
And you'll give up.
You'll give up on our species and humanity.
I think knowledge and skills are better preparation than stocking up on stuff.
You can't carry it.
And somebody might off you for that stuff. Know how to survive basic survival, have skills to barter. Yeah, for sure. Like they can steal your your food supply, but they can't steal your um your expertise and unique skills that you bring to the table.
Extinction is part of our human history.
Humans [ __ ] in their own nest when they're not [ __ ] on each other.
Um yeah, I mean I don't know. Like obviously there's periods of of mass die-offs in in every species, but that doesn't mean that it's like natural or good.
And you know, if if we can circumnavigate um things before they get even worse, like why not? I I do have faith in the human spirit and uh the human drive to progress and adapt.
But man, it sure is neck and neck right now.
We are the universe experiencing itself.
Yep, that's right.
Moses Law says they also need to store a lot of data that they increasingly collect with flock surveillance hence they are there are more huge data centers built. Right. Yeah, it's not they're not building data centers for us to have use of of them. They're they're collecting data on all of us and creating a flock camera network.
It's a mass surveillance Ponzi scheme.
Mhm.
Uh-huh, Satan.
Skitch skitch skitch.
Beep.
Damn, man. I am low energy. What day is it? It's Saturday, huh?
Shoo. Oh, yeah. Also on the topic of the last free place, I do want to put out just like a general I don't know general word. Um Slab City Library is not looking for new um crew mates at this time.
Um but if you are somebody that is interested in being hands-on here for um you know, a trial period to maybe a longer period of time or you want to maybe just come through for a little bit or maybe you're interested in collaborating efforts here.
Um we will be looking for crew come September and October.
So, if that's if that's something that's been on your mind and you're like, you know, I would really love to to spend a season working at the library sometime and you know, serve the community and get a feel for how Slab City works and do that from a space that provides to the community, then hit me up and make plans for um the the fall.
Um and you can learn skills that will be very valuable uh to you going forward with uh the way that things are going, you know, maybe you might not live in Slab City for the rest of your life, but you can take those skills elsewhere.
And um you know, you can learn how to survive off grid out here and how to build your own systems. So, we are looking for volunteers, crewmates, um etc. Not now, not in the summer. That'll be more of a liability than anything, but in the fall. So, I just wanted to start putting out the word, putting putting heads up to people so that if if you are thinking about that, you have a few months to prepare.
Um and and you don't have to be here immediately in September or October uh but earlier in the season is when we're trying to get a lot of work done in preparation for the season.
But, you know, we'll be here throughout the I I'll be here all through next season.
Um and augmenting the infrastructure here. I've got some big plans and uh having some more hands on deck would be really really nice.
>> Are any of the silos vacant? What do you Which silos There's There's We don't have silos here.
Um but the library has a lot of open space and there's a lot of open space out further in the desert.
So, one thing like people that are coming to slabs new almost everybody has this lofty dream of building their own thing, which is I mean, obviously I did that um in a way. Um it's it's definitely a collaborative effort.
Um but you know, I'm I'm running the space.
It's my house, but there's it's a community effort and it's a community space. Um but like so many people come out here and they want to be like the guy that built this thing and run it and stuff and there's already a lot of establishments. Like I've always told people like if it's your first season in slabs, go and join another camp and and see it as um uh as like a training or like uh like schooling, you know, cuz all all of these different establishments love to get help, especially through the summer.
Um and you can see firsthand it's actually a like a really valuable experience and opportunity um to go and see firsthand like what works in these establishments and what doesn't and how they run them. That way when and if you do decide to make your own establishment and space out here that you have that understanding and background information that'll save you years of struggle and possibly uh failure.
T I says, "Lift off grid and grew and hunted 70% of sustenance. Raise coffee and beer doesn't grow where I live."
Yeah, I mean, I'm not like a purist about stuff either. I go to the grocery store like everybody else, but um I I want to move away from that. Um I mean, [ __ ] I I like I like my chicken nuggets and, you know, like my stupid Babylon snacks, too.
But, you know, over the next seasons I would love to be growing a lot of my own stuff and um find more time to go like bird hunting.
Um and that type of thing. But, also, you know, there's a lot of livestock farms around here, like small hobby farms, where you can just go and buy a chicken to butcher or a pig um or whatever and you know, that's that that's another way.
But, I honestly, personally, haven't been really eating a whole lot of meat lately. I do eat meat. Um and I, you know, I talked about this earlier in the stream, but um I try to make ethical meat consumption choices. And at this point in my life, like I'm okay with going a few days without eating meat.
Um I don't think that there's any reason for people to eat meat with every meal.
That's crazy to me.
Especially if you've never killed anything. I think that's actually kind of offensive.
Hell yeah, Aaron's posting my GoFundMe.
There are links in the description if you want to get down with the kick down.
Um like I said, I'm trying to save up uh to buy a proper battery bank for the library so that we can have actual power.
Um and I've been hooking stuff up together and doing my damndest, but I'm I'm really hitting a wall here. There's only so much that you can build with the components that I have.
Um Yeah, it's uh and and batteries are expensive. Um they're really expensive. So, that's that's really it. I've got all the rest of the stuff lined up. All I need is a battery bank.
Um and you know, if uh if even half of that goal is reached on the GoFundMe, that will be a huge huge game changer.
Isn't that right, Satan?
Yeah.
Isn't that right? That'll be a huge game changer. We'll be able to run all sorts of stuff.
Squirrel tacos, squirrel stew, squirrel barbecue. Hell yeah.
I actually do have uh some venison in my in the cooler that I cooked today. I was going to make some maybe uh maybe a venison chili or something. Um that's probably what I'll do.
It sounds good. I like venison, too, cuz like you really don't I mean, I'm sure there's like deer farms for for that sort of thing, but it's it's more ethical.
How old is Satan now? She is like 11, going on 12, something like that.
She's an old baby.
She's starting to get kind of wonky in her back hips, like she's just kind of starting to drag her feet a little bit, or if she's got to jump into the car or something, I have to like help her in there, and it really happened super fast, too. It was like one day she was like totally fine and normal, like tearing ass, and then the next day she was just like dragging her little back feet, and I was like, "What the [ __ ] happened?" and I you know, like investigated and touched around her hips, and she didn't seem to be in pain or anything.
I don't think it hurts her, but she's just like not able to move her back legs like she used to.
Very sad.
But, that's that's the natural way of things, you know, aging is is normal. She's not going to be here forever.
But, yeah, it's it's it's one of those things that's hard to see cuz you know.
Yeah, it's it's hard to watch uh watch your dog get old.
Daniel says "I've just heard on the TV that she had a child at 16 and gave him up option and my son at the same age and I've never done that. Send me details." I don't I I don't know what you're talking about.
Who are on What are you I Yeah, I'm I'm I'm lost. I'm sorry.
TI says, "I love Satan so much. She's a great spirit. She's awesome."
She's a good girl.
I'm trying to read this message that's held for review, but for Okay, there we go.
Seamo Homegrown says, "Hello, how is commercialism?"
I don't know what that means. Could you explain to me what you're asking?
Um Achoo!
Achoo! Geez.
Excuse me.
What's up, Clem Fandango? How you doing?
>> [snorts] >> JC Moses Law says, "Yeah, I remember a deer farm near one of those public lands. There are also more deers in Seasonville, California, than people.
Drove me nuts, like cows in India on the road."
>> [snorts] >> Bless you. Thank you very much.
Oh, I see [ __ ] Wait, no.
Never mind.
Yeah, I see. She's amazing to have traveled and adapted so well to many situations. Yeah, Sin's Sin's a G.
Sin's a certified gangster, dude. She's She's crazy, man.
You're nuts, dude.
You're absolute unit.
Yeah, she's ridden more freight trains than a lot of ooggles.
>> [snorts] >> Yeah, baby.
She's got like over 20,000 miles under her belt, something like that.
Good job, Satan. You're an icon.
Oh my goodness.
She's the leader of the cheese dog mafia, also. Yeah, hell yeah.
Steve Rogers says, "My only concern about the people living in Slab City is the end of Medi-Cal for people who are not working or volunteering at least 80 hours starting in 2027."
Thanks to the current regime.
Volunteering 80 hours. Yeah, like I think the thing is like most people in Slab City are actually volunteering like many hours a week. Like any anybody like, you know, like me, I'm I'm working uh running the library from you know, 9:00 a.m. to typically like 6:00 p.m. or so.
Um what is that? That's 9 hours, right?
For 4 days a week.
That's not Yeah, 80 hours a week. I don't think that I don't think that's a real thing I don't think that's a real thing. But also, that kind of brings me into the other uh topic that I was talking about earlier today is like um like as far as um public resources and stuff go, too. A lot of people will come come into my chat and be like, you know, "Get a job. [ __ ] you. You can't be on, you know, you can't can't be on public health insurance if you don't bring anything to society or whatever." And it's like, I mean, what good is having a society if we don't have resources compiled to to share amongst ourselves. Like it's like the whole point of coming together as a society so that all of our efforts come together so that we can all provide for each other and increase our quality of life so that our society can improve and become better and then we have, you know, more more capabilities as a society. Like a society is only as good as the most disadvantaged. That's why it's important to take care of people with disabilities.
>> [snorts] >> Like if we can't provide for the needs of everybody then then what's the [ __ ] point? And like what is a government if not to regulate the distribution of our resources?
Like that's not what it does, obviously. It It's a tool of the ruling class.
And I think that that veil has lifted for most people.
But yeah, like that's I mean, [ __ ] that's that's the whole point of of having a government and having a society.
And if they're not doing it then that's that's just coercion and, you know, uh what what is like slavery essentially.
>> [snorts] >> A government is supposed to be by the people, for the people. That's right.
It's 80 hours per month. Okay, yeah, I easily get 80 hours per month.
But yeah, I don't know.
Not everybody in slabs uses um like public resources. Um a lot of people are on public health insurance and you know, why not?
Um and a lot of people do have EBT.
And um but not everybody. I mean, I think people would find a way to adapt.
Um it's you know, we've been hit with so many different things over the last decade that make it harder to live out here and maintain a good quality of life.
Um but you know, we persist.
>> [snorts] >> Oh man, we're getting up to about an hour here. Anybody got any more questions, comments, concerns?
Oh, it's so funny I'm wearing a toga and a [ __ ] digital watch. That is such a weird look.
>> [snorts] >> How strange.
Like what am I trying to do with this look?
>> [laughter] >> Oh man.
How is the bartering system there?
There's not a system of bartering.
People barter.
Some people prefer barter more than others, you know.
Um most people prefer to acquire things directly from other people.
Um then buy it. But you know, sometimes sometimes you got to buy stuff.
It's kind of just um it it depends on on the person.
>> [snorts] >> Oxy [ __ ] I'm yeah, primitive and uh and advanced at the same time.
I what's up, Thomas?
How you doing?
Well, I really didn't mean system not the way I meant that. Okay.
Yeah, I mean, you know, words words have meaning, so I was just clarifying for you.
I'm sure you didn't mean anything by it, but yeah, it's not it's just, you know, people people be bargaining.
Um and that's just a that's a thing. That's the thing that we do. That's just one tool in the tool chest, but there's many other tools.
Oh my goodness.
Buh.
Oh, yeah.
This is why I'm This is why siestas are a thing cuz when you're in the desert and it's hot, you know, around midday or so, they just that heat kills your energy and you just sleep through it and wake up for another few hours before sundown and get the rest of your chores done.
Me, I just go into a Zelda stasis.
I just like settle into my little game and escape into my little little realm of Hyrule.
And uh yeah.
I I really just can't nap during the day. I don't know. I've never been able to.
Siesta good. Si bueno.
Awesome.
All right. Well, I Ooh.
Oh my goodness.
I'm going to [ __ ] right off. I'm going to eat some food, play some Zelda, and >> [snorts] >> depending on my energy level, maybe I'll work on some other stuff. Um check out the links in the description, especially the GoFundMe. I would really love um to just gain some momentum on that. I just set it up today, so it's it's brand new, hot off the press. You heard it here first, folks. Um Slab City Library needs a new battery bank so that we can upgrade our power system. We have all the other components lined up, ready to go. I got to order a couple little pieces of hardware.
Um but anything helps.
And it's not just me that you're supporting, it's Slab City Library and our outreach, which affects our community.
Um and we're we're really trying to do a lot of good things and get better at doing a lot of good things. And I want to I want to serve my community and I want to bring it to the next level. So, you can help with that if you want to like, share, whatever. And if you're new on my channel, you can hit the subscribe button.
You can hit the like button.
You can hit the bell notification icon if you want to get notified when I go live. And if you would like to get down with the kickdown, I would love that. That'll be dope. Um And oh yeah, we got a Discord server.
It's pretty cool. Join the Discord server and you can chat in there.
Um yeah.
I will see you all later. Thank you so much for joining me and stay free.
All right. Bye.
