Is high-fructose corn syrup really that bad? Today we're going to tackle it. One of the most controversial ingredients hiding in your food, high-fructose corn syrup. You may also see it as HFCS. Now that the current US administration is turning its eye right towards regulating high-fructose corn syrup, yes, even calling it out in soft drinks such as Coke.

Let's dive into the science, the politics, and the biblical perspective.
Because if it's not part of God's original design, it's not part of optimal health. That's the bottom line.
So what is high-fructose corn syrup?
Basically, it's just a cheap lab experiment sweetener made from corn starch.
It became wildly popular in the 1970s when sugar prices really started to rise. And now it's in almost everything.
Sodas, condiments, breads, granola bars, even salad dressings. Unlike natural sugars like fruit or honey, high-fructose corn syrup is processed to contain higher levels of fructose, which behaves very differently in your body.
So why is it being targeted?
Well, in recent months health advocates and even government leaders have been pointing fingers at high-fructose corn syrup. Major brands like Coca-Cola are facing pressure to reformulate their products.
But why the shift? Because decades of research are now being looked at that show high-fructose corn syrup is linked to obesity, fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and even cognitive decline.
It has become the poster child for processed food addiction, and the body isn't fooled.
Let's ask the question that we love to ask here. Is this a food God called good, or is it a lab experiment? Well, God gave us natural sweeteners like honey and and date syrup and and just different flavors of honey, even dates and fruit. They're a blessing. You can see that in Proverbs 24:13. These come with enzymes and fiber and nutrients that support health. But high fructose corn syrup? No. It's man-made, it's altered, it's stripped of all nourishment, and repackaged to be hyper sweet, cheap, and habit-forming.
Scripture warns us to not be mastered by anything in 1 Corinthians 6:12. And high fructose corn syrup is a master manipulator. It hijacks your taste buds, triggers cravings, and leads to food addiction. This is not a food. It's a lab experiment. High fructose corn syrup hijacks your body.
Unlike God's natural foods, it's actually designed for profit and not for health. It alters your metabolism, rewires your brain reward system, and feeds harmful bacteria to your gut.
Let's look at your microbiome, the army of good bacteria. God designed it to keep you well, and it's outnumbered. And the results are everywhere: fatigue, mood swings, chronic illness, and weight gain.
So, let me explain as we go deeper into the science because high fructose corn syrup, it isn't just empty calories. It damages your body's metabolic core.
So, here are five key areas that show the harm. Number one is the liver.
Only your liver can metabolize fructose.
Glucose fuels your muscles and your brain. Fructose, it bypasses insulin and dumps straight into the liver. This is where it's rapidly converted to fat through a process that is called de novo lipogenesis.
Over time, this builds up as visceral fat around your organs, and it leads to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Now, sadly, and this is really sad, it's not just adults. Children are increasingly being diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
And it's often tied directly to the high fructose corn syrup intake that each child is taking in. Yeah, those flavored colored cereals, yeah.
Throw them in the trash.
So, here are some early symptoms that parents might miss that your child is having trouble.
Constant fatigue even when they sleep well.
Increased cravings, especially for sugar and carbs, processed carbs.
Bloating or pain in the upper right abdomen.
Yellowing of the skin or the eyes. Now, that's pretty much in advanced stages.
You don't want to see that.
Unexplained weight gain, especially around the belly.
And then changes in stool.
If they're pale and greasy stools, that's liver stress.
And irritability and and brain fog.
And sometimes we attribute that to so many different things, but it could be the liver.
And sometimes children have no symptoms at all until the labs show elevated liver enzymes.
So, the danger.
Most pediatricians don't screen for fatty liver disease unless a child is visibly overweight.
And yet even [snorts] thin kids can develop non-alcoholic fatty liver disease from years of high fructose corn syrup exposure. As parents and caregivers and grandparents, we have a calling to protect the temples that God designed in our children to thrive and not to be chronically ill by the age of 10 because of hidden sugars in drinks and snacks.
Your liver, which was designed to filter toxins and to build hormones, when it becomes inflamed and sluggish and overwhelmed by high fructose corn syrup, we have to ask ourselves, is it really worth it?
In Leviticus, we see the liver being treated as with honor during offerings.
God knew its value. Today, we overload it with fake sweeteners and expect it to keep us healthy. Number two, insulin resistance because fructose doesn't trigger a strong insulin response. So, your body becomes confused. And over time, insulin receptors, they get desensitized, which leads to prediabetes and metabolic syndrome. Number three is leptin resistance. Leptin is the I'm full hormone and fructose suppresses it.
Have you ever had one of those days where you eat and then you eat some more and you eat some more and you never feel full?
You just crave and crave and crave and you just keep eating.
Yeah, that's resistance.
Number four is ghrelin stimulation.
Ghrelin is your I'm hungry, let's eat hormone and it spikes after high fructose corn syrup intake. So, not only are you not full, you're hungrier than when you started.
Number five is brain chemistry. High fructose corn syrup has been shown to increase dopamine spikes just like addictive drugs and over time the reward system of the brain, it just becomes numb and it requires more and more to feel the pleasure.
Well, this is why high fructose corn syrup is often called nutritional cocaine.
God gave us foods to nourish our bodies, balance our hormones and restore our minds. High fructose corn syrup does the opposite. It disrupts, distorts and destroys.
It's the counterfeit sweet that breaks your temple down from the inside out.
Now, let's look at the hidden names of high fructose corn syrup on labels.
This is where we get into label trickery.
The idea that high fructose corn syrup is a problem is not new. It It may be new to you, but I've been teaching about it since 2003 in our Treasures of Healthy Living Bible Study.
And many people have cried out over the years, but not just me and that's why there are so many names now on the market to disguise this harmful addictive substance.
High fructose corn syrup hides under sneaky names.
So, if you see these names, you're looking at high fructose corn syrup in its disguise.
Maize syrup, fruit fructose, glucose fructose syrup. This is most common in Europe and Canada. Iso-glucose, tapioca syrup, crystalline fructose, corn sugar that was used to rebrand high fructose corn syrup by the industry, fructose syrup, or just fructose.
Be careful about that one because usually it's a synthetic.
And sometimes it's just listed as natural sweetener.
But there is nothing natural about it.
It's very deceptive.
So why is this so deceptive? Because people are waking up. So the food industry gets clever with wording.
As a biblical nutritionist, I always say, "God foods don't need marketing gimmicks. They're honest, simple, and life-giving."
Eat the food God called good. Remember our three principles? And avoid all lab experiments. So what can you eat instead?
Here's what I recommend. We've already talked about it. Number one would be date syrup. It's extremely biblical.
The other one would be raw honey, the other side of honey in scripture. Full of enzymes and healing benefits. In the nutrition manual, I share all of the benefits of honey and date syrup. But dates in general and figs, they're biblical, they're nourishing, and they're sweet.
Fresh fruits, whole seasonal fruits.
Sweet potatoes, root vegetables like sweet potatoes and carrots, they have their own sweetener in it.
Let's reclaim God's sweet plan and stop falling for man's sweet traps.
So is high fructose corn syrup harmful?
Absolutely.
It's not part of God's menu. It hijacks your health. It leaves your temple in disrepair, your body temple.
So let's be people of wisdom. Let's honor God with our choices knowing that every bite we take is either building us up or breaking us down.
