Edmonton stand against gender-based violence in the Moose Hide Campaign

[00:00:00]A simple square of moose hide, a symbol to help raise awareness about the ongoing issue of gender-based violence against Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people highlighted Thursday at Edmonton City Hall.

[00:00:18]According to Statistics Canada, the homicide rate for Indigenous people was six times higher compared to the non-Indigenous people in 2022.

[00:00:28]The goal is to reduce the violence to zero. Wearing the moose hide pin starts more conversations. So, you know, the more conversations that we are having across the province, across the country, um creates that awareness and hopefully, you know, we'll one day continue to work towards decreasing the stats [music] for our people. The city officially declaring May 14th as Moose Hide Day, the fifth year Edmonton has partnered with the Indigenous Sports Council of Alberta for the campaign. We work with in all the city processes, procedures, budgets, programs, etc. to look at how we can support the fight against violence against missing and murdered Indigenous relatives and ensuring that we are supporting the community as best as we can. The Moose Hide campaign started back in 2011 in British Columbia.
