When fuel prices increase significantly, transportation costs cascade through the entire economy, affecting not only direct fuel expenses but also public transportation fares, freight costs, and ultimately the prices of essential goods like food, creating widespread economic hardship for citizens.

Nairobi CBD on Fire as Matatu Operators announce Total Shutdown on Monday本站添加:
It is a total shutdown in Nairobi CBD.
And this is following a number of announcements which were made since yesterday up to today. Actually, these announcements are continuing to come out as time goes by. Now, there are a number of people who are making these announcements and I want us to look at a number of them. And first of all, I want to tell you the reason why Nairobi CBD is currently at total shutdown. And I hope that this video is going to find you at the at a good time before you go to Nairobi because things are about to change.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome again to the Bein Report. And what is currently happening is something which a lot of Kenyans were worried that if it happens, then their life is going to be even more harder. What has happened is as we are speaking right now, the matatu operators have hiked their prices by 50%.
That means if Okay, this is in most parts of Nairobi.
And you can attest in the comment section. Tell me if you are a person who commutes to Nairobi, tell me if your route the prices have been hiked. So, if you pay 100 shillings to travel maybe to the city or anywhere in within the city, now according to matatu operators, they are saying these prices will now be 150 Kenyan shillings. And this following the new fuel prices which were announced yesterday. And I want to share a number of statements with you together with a number of videos because Kenyans have already started calling for protest on Monday. Not only uh Kenyans calling for protest, but also the government has made some actions which I believe it is important that we look at what the government has announced and what is currently happening in relation to this whole case. Matatu fares increased by 50% as operators call for nationwide strike.
Now, this was the first group to call for a strike, the matatu operators. This ranges from the drivers, the conductors, anyone involved with the matatu business, they are calling for a nationwide strike.
And the reason for this you might wonder is because even if they increase the prices, their business business still goes low because there's a person who would have traveled but because he or she doesn't have that extra 50 shillings will end up not traveling and that at the long run ends up to the matatu business operators making losses. That's the first one.
Matatu operators in Nairobi announces 50% fare hike and the nationwide strike has been scheduled for this coming Monday.
At the time of recording this video, it's on a Friday, the 15th of May, the year 2026.
And the announcement came out around afternoon.
So, this coming Monday, if nothing will have changed, if the government will not have made one or two changes in the fuel prices, then expect no movement from the matatus. They will not be going to the city. They will have blocked the roads.
There will you going to the city will be a total it will be impossible because when they announce something like this, they usually take it very seriously.
Now, when we talk about fuel prices, I want to mention the exact fuel prices which were changed yesterday.
As you all know, every 14th of every month, the Energy Petroleum and Regulatory Authority EPRA usually announces new fuel prices. So, as you can see, just minutes after midnight, that was yesterday night, petrol stations adjusted their price boards to reflect the new increased fuel prices.
In its latest review, EPRA increased petrol prices by Ksh 16.65 and diesel by Ksh 46.29.
Kerosene prices remained the same. So, we are looking at petrol and diesel.
For petrol, which is the most most used by most vehicles or machines, it was increased by 16.65.
That's a lot of shillings for every single liter of fuel.
And for diesel, a single liter, if it cost the last time we checked, it was costing around two, I think it was 210 there. Now, it's increased that price by 200 and sorry, increased the price by 46.
29 per liter.
Long queues formed at petrol stations in Isili, Nairobi as motorists and boda boda riders rushed to refuel ahead of new fuel prices announced by EPRA, which took effect at midnight. So, these are images from yesterday night, minutes before the fuel fuel prices were changed at midnight.
So, Kenya now stands as one of the countries that currently has the highest fuel prices in Africa.
And as you can see, these are the colors that you should look at. Kenya it has I think a light light uh light brown. Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda. And in all the countries that are mentioned there, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Ethiopia, petrol and diesel in Kenya, they are the most expensive because for petrol in Kenya, now it retails at 214.25.
In uh Uganda, it goes for 187. And this is something that people usually wonder, how does it happen? How is it that Uganda's petrol passes through Kenya, through the Kenya pipeline, goes to Uganda, and ends up cheaper than the fuel in Kenya?
Why is it in in Uganda the fuel is the petrol is going for 187? And in Kenya, the same same petrol is going for 214.
Well, in Tanzania, it's going for 203.
274. In Rwanda, it's going for 175.
11.
And in Ethiopia, very affordable, very cheap, 138.13.
When we go to diesel, in Kenya, diesel goes for 242.92.
In Uganda, it goes for 180.60.
In Tanzania, it goes for 210.33.
In Rwanda, it goes for 171.50.
And in Ethiopia, it goes for 148.81.
And I'm wondering, Connie, what is what are what are Ethiopians doing which we Kenyans are not doing? Because when you look at the difference, for example, in diesel, Kenya's 242, Ethiopia 148. That That's a difference of over 100 shillings.
Diesel in Uganda is more than 100 shillings cheaper compared to Kenya.
And also in in petrol, I think there is a difference of about uh uh let's say 80-something shillings. That's a lot of a lot of money.
Now, every commodity has called for Kenyans to carry empty jerrycans to Nairobi on Monday in protest over high fuel prices. So, you can see this are hundreds and hundreds of jerrycans which he pulled through the streets of Nairobi in protest of the new fuel prices. And this is just a short video for you to see how the situation was. And as this happened, he has now called upon Kenyans to show up on Monday uh carrying jerrycans. And this is for them to protest the new fuel prices that have just been announced by Epra. Now, ladies and gentlemen, I don't know if you're going to uh go to Nairobi on Monday to protest on CBD just like people are calling like Eric Omondi, other Kenyans are also uh saying that these prices are now too much. Everything imepanda bei uh from uh uh from uh mafuta imepata imepanda bei. Go to tomatoes, nyanya imepanda bei. Unga, sugar, potatoes, onions, everything imepanda bei. Now, the traveling prices pia zimepandishwa.
So, a number of people have reacted. For example, you can see the Mumias East Member of Parliament Honorable Peter Salasya is one of the people who has spoken. And this is what he had to say.
The latest play press release from Epra is a mealy-mouthed language that is about cautioning and prudently incurred cost. It is an insult to every Kenyan filling their tank or buying kerosene for their household use.
The petrol petroleum pricing regulations claim to cap retail prices to ensure reasonable prices to consumers while allowing recovery of importation cost. But when the importation system itself is broken, corrupt, and exposed to unchecked global volatility, the regulation is just a rubber stamp to exploitation.
Kenya deserves better than this. The Kenyan people deserve a fuel policy that prioritizes the survival of a Gulf supplier contracts.
Politically connected oil marketers and the fiction that our 80-day credit delay somehow constitutes shielding from price shocks. Now, freight prices shock triggers matatu fare hikes, overnight queues across Kenya. Now, as all these things are happening, the government has come out to say that they have put aside 5 billion Kenyan shillings and this is meant to stabilize the diesel and kerosene prices here in the Republic of Kenya. It's F Prach who announced that and according to CS Energy, that is Opio and I, this is what he had to say. We wish to inform the public that the latest review of petroleum pump prices has been undertaken against the backdrop of sustained volatility in the global oil market arising from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. So, ladies and gentlemen, can you imagine the government is saying they have already set aside 5 billion Kenyan shillings to deal with the fuel prices, but already the freight prices are incredibly high.
Uh but they are saying already we have cautioned So, this means the government is trying to say if they had not done what they are doing, maybe the prices could be if it's 240, it could be maybe over 300. I don't know what to think about this, but currently a lot of people are angry, a lot of people are fed up and they have been affected by the new fuel prices.
The people who travel expect to add an extra uh 50% to your cost. If you pay 50, now it will be 70 or 80. If you You 100, it will be 150.
If you pay 200, it will be 300 now.
And this goes cut across the board.
Even things that don't involve petrol, diesel, they are going to increase in prices. Food stuffs, hunger, everything.
Anyways, that's it for now. I hope that you have understood the stories we have gone through today. I would like to hear your thoughts and opinions on what we have discussed. So, put your thoughts in the comment section below. Thank you for watching this video up to the end. I will be back with more updates.
