[00:00:00]Hello everyone, and welcome back to Jona Hoak Music. I know it's been a little bit. I've been putting off recording.

[00:00:04]I'm not going to lie. But, we're back today with a completely new band. What I've gathered from Nightwish is that they're a symphonic metal band, which is interesting cuz I I don't think I've heard really sym- symphonic metal before. I guess, well, a little bit. So, I'm kind of wondering if they're like a kind of like an Epica kind of thing or something. I don't know. I'm not really sure what to expect, but the song is 9 minutes long.

[00:00:31]So, I'm guessing it's going to get progressive and maybe a little strange, I hope. Thank you to the Warning Army for all your support, but we got to do a new band now. So, without further ado, let's get into Nightwish Ghost Love Score.

[00:01:13]Already weird type time signatures going on.

[00:01:59]That's a big crowd. [music] Okay, before I go any further, you know what this reminds me of immediately? I'm a huge Two Steps from Hell fan.

[00:02:08]Um this feels like that like grandiose epic adventure kind of feel.

[00:02:14]Or like a like a big old movie soundtrack kind of thing. I'm curious cuz I don't see any like strings players on stage and I'm willing to bet that the the pianist up there is probably the one playing most of those.

[00:02:32]Um I'm sure they probably use some sort of backing tracks for different parts.

[00:02:39]But um I'm getting ahead of myself. The time signature stuff is weird. I don't even know what's going on there. It was some kind of offbeat there in like the the third measure.

[00:02:51]Um I want to go back and listen to that.

[00:02:53]That was crazy.

[00:03:00]>> [cheering] >> Okay, I get it now. Already getting like a complex uh meter here.

[00:03:26]So I'm counting it in 6/8, but there's only two measures of it and then they go into a 5/8 measure and then I believe back to a 6/8 measure. First of all, 6/8 is already not used super often. I love 6/8. My most famous cover on YouTube um is in 6/8 time, The Song of the Golden Dragon. but 5/8 measure and then a 6/8 measure again.

[00:03:57]Super interesting. Time signatures aside, the key we're in, I believe, is D minor.

[00:04:08]>> [music] >> Yeah, definitely Okay, we're in D minor here. And then let's give a listen to that.

[00:04:32]Oh, wow. Okay. So, we're in the key of D minor.

[00:04:37]Um but then they're staying on that D minor there.

[00:04:44]>> [music] >> And then they're going to the six, which is uh that would be a B flat major.

[00:05:12]>> [music] >> Something like that. That's super interesting. Uh I want to go back and catch this again. I'm sorry I'm pausing so much in the beginning. Like I I can tell this is going to be a long video.

[00:06:07]Um so a minor third going up a minor third basically is taking So in the key of D minor it would be a D and then uh a minor third means three semitones up. Three semitones above D would be F. So now we're in the key of F minor basically. And so instead of D minor B flat to C, now we have an F minor a D flat and then an E flat, I believe.

[00:06:42]So we're still doing the one, the six, and the seven, just a minor third up.

[00:07:19]This is brilliant. So now we're back in D minor but the time signature has changed.

[00:07:26]We're not in 6/8 anymore. We're in 4/4.

[00:07:29]Not only are we in 4/4 though but it's doing that the third measure is doing the offbeat again. It's 4/4 4/4 3/4 4/4 for the four measures respectively. I don't even know what to say. That's interesting. Wow.

[00:08:41]>> [singing] [music] [music] [music] >> I just got full body chills. Uh that's not the voice I expected. I've I've heard Floor in compilations before, but uh I've never heard her voice like in context to the song. She's clearly a trained opera singer. She's got a more contemporary sound.

[00:09:27]Breathy a little bit, but it's clear like she's leaning into the bel canto technique somewhat, having a wider vibrato in the chorus there. Sick outfit. Love that. I got to catch that again. I wasn't even paying attention to the chords or anything, honestly. I was just listening to her voice.

[00:10:13]So, we're in the key of F major? So, they went from F minor to F major somehow without me noticing.

[00:10:22]Uh I don't know how they did that. I want to listen to that one more time before I break down the chords.

[00:10:33]>> [music] [music] >> Okay, this is brilliant. Um So, how do you get to the key of F minor to the key of F major without someone noticing? The way you do it is by playing a chord without them third in it. So, the difference between an F major and an F minor is an F major chord is composed of F, C, and A.

[00:11:21]Um the third would be technically the A. But, an F minor flats the third.

[00:11:31]Um a minor chord is just a major chord but with a flatted third.

[00:11:38]>> [music] >> So, how did they get from F minor to F major without me noticing? The answer is to eliminate the third from the chord entirely. So, they're playing just the one and the five, which would be an F and a C.

[00:11:56]So, that you don't exactly know like what key we're in now.

[00:12:02]Then they have Floor come in on the major third, establishing the key as F major now.

[00:12:18]>> [music] [singing] [music] [music] >> And now we're in B flat minor?

[00:12:48]>> [music] [music] [singing] [music] >> That's really cool. So, we're in the key of F major in the the verse here, but they're playing an F major, >> [music] >> but then they're playing a C minor.

[00:13:18]>> [music] >> So, where's the C minor coming from because C minor is not in the key of F major, believe it or not. But, C minor is in the key of F minor. So, they're borrowing the C minor chord from F minor and playing it in place of the subdominant or the the two chord in F major.

[00:13:43]So, it has this interesting like mystical feel to it. One of my favorite composers of all time does this in so many of his songs. If you guys have played Skyrim, you know what I'm talking about. Jeremy Soule does this all the time.

[00:14:00]And it's got such a fantasy feel to it.

[00:14:03]I don't even know how to explain it.

[00:14:05]But then they um so they do the F major to C minor.

[00:14:13]>> [music] >> Back to F major.

[00:14:20]>> [music] >> F major and then before they go into the chorus, they F sharp major back to F major.

[00:14:34]And then it sounds like they go into B flat minor.

[00:14:41]There's so much to break down here.

[00:14:44]>> [music and singing] [music] [music] >> Opens up and then closes her vowels a little bit to get that more operatic sound.

[00:15:57]They've already done so much in so little time.

Okay, before we get into this next part, we've already gone through like four or five keys. Not only that, but like three time signature changes. Like, there's so much that's already happened. What could possibly happen next? Is this at Wacken Festival?

[00:16:54]Cuz that looks familiar, that cow's head with the fire. Okay, let's let's break down the chords here. This This is an interesting little refrain here.

[00:17:07]>> [music] [cheering] [music and singing] [singing] >> This refrain here is staying in the key of B flat minor.

[00:17:36]Um so they're hovering around the B flat minor and then the A flat.

[00:17:42]>> [music] [music] >> And then they jump to and then they jump to an E flat.

[00:17:56]Which isn't in the key of B flat minor.

[00:18:00]Um so they're also also borrowing that chord. But then they're going into >> [music] >> F minor which would be the five chord in B flat minor. Then they're going to that C minor.

[00:18:18]There's definitely some some weird like chord stuff going on in here. Um I mean I could literally sit here all day and talk about chords and keys.

[00:18:29]But I mean I got [laughter] 7 minutes left in the video. We got to continue on.

[00:19:55]Um I like when guitarists do this. They know when to hold back and serve the song. He could have shredded something there. He didn't. He instead does something very melodic, and that's all the song needed. Uh you might have see uh at the end of that part there, he uh kind of took his hand off the right part of the guitar there, and uh it looks like he muted the strings.

[00:20:25]The reason he's doing that is um he's sustaining that note, of course, but um to keep the other strings from ringing out, uh he's muting the strings by holding his fingers here. I can tell this guy can shred.

[00:20:39]He definitely can.

[00:21:16]Ooh, the choir comes in.

[00:24:29]>> [music] [music] >> So so far we've gotten mostly clean vocals from her are all clean vocals. So she's jumped between the contemporary more breathy sound, the more like honky like belty kind of Broadway sounds, and then the more bel canto like wide vibrato sound as well.

[00:25:02]Now she's throwing in like grit in her voice and more of that like metalish sound. So she's compressing her vocals.

[00:25:12]Um and then she's doing like like little vocal cracks too at the end of some of her lines there. She's also getting quite high up there. She's starting to get up into um like soprano territory like D5s and maybe an E5 there like This is like a blend of all of my favorite things into one thing.

Like she I guarantee you she's probably done some insane work before. Like she's probably sung like Diva Dance or something like that. Or like Phantom of the Opera. Who composed this? Please let me know who composed this. This guy is crazy.

[00:30:03]All right. Well, apparently she's freaking Celine Dion. So, she hits that like operatic sounding, I believe it was an F5.

[00:30:20]So, comp- two completely different tones. And then she hits this freaking crazy high mixed belt.

[00:30:29]I think it's like a G sharp or something like that. That's up there, man.

[00:30:39]Not many people can do that.

[00:30:42]Um I can't even think of a song with G sharp five in it. I need to hear that again.

[00:32:55]>> I legit don't know what I just listened to. I've heard Floor in clips. I didn't know she could sing like that. She's definitely a soprano.

[00:33:04]Please send me your recommendations. I want to hear more of Floor. I also want to hear more of Nightwish. I've never in my life heard a metal band with that complex of a piece, minus uh well, Dream Theater. This is like really, really good composing. Please put in the comments the name of the composer. He is extremely talented. I wish I could compose as well as he could. I don't know who the composer would be. I don't know. It might be the pianist. Well, that was certainly a journey.

[00:33:34]I have no idea what rabbit hole I just got myself into. Please, please, please give me recommendations on what to listen to from Nightwish next. Um I really want to hear more of Floor's singing. I want to hear this composer's more of this composer's work. Please put in the comments his name, too, cuz I have no idea who he is.
