The blueprint and the finished product, or how Piet Mondrian sketched his way to abstraction.
Mondrian's early works were pragmatic, consisting of impressionist landscapes, visually pleasing still lives, >> [music] >> symbolist portraits, and a brief encounter with pointillism. By the early 1910s, he started transitioning to his signature style. In Scaffold, Study for Tableau Three, we see the basis of his artistic principle, long horizontal and vertical lines, square and rectangle shapes, and grid-like background. In the finished version, Tableau Three, we see the color schemes, only three colors filling the grid blocks separated by the black lines. This was just the beginning of Mondrian's simplification of color and form, which he believed was necessary [music] to achieve universal beauty.
In doing so, he created a specific style celebrated and used even today.
