If you examine the list of countries and territories with the highest population density, you will notice that many of the world's smallest countries and microstates rank at the very top. This makes sense. With very limited land area, even a moderate population results in extremely high density. Population density measures the average number of people living per square kilometer. Starting from sixth place is Bangladesh. This relatively large country has a mostly rural population, but still reaches about 1,240 people per square kilometer. Fifth is Malta, a small island nation in the Mediterranean Sea south of Sicily. It has around 500,000 people and a density of about 1,548 people per square kilometer. Fourth is the Maldives, made up of many tiny islands in the Indian Ocean. With a population of about 540,000, its density is roughly 1,719 people per square kilometer. Third is Bahrain, a small island country in the Persian Gulf with over 1.7 million people and a density of around 2,012 people per square kilometer. Most people live in urban areas. Second is Singapore, a tiny island city-state with nearly 6 million people living at a density of about 8,000 people per square kilometer. Number one is Monaco, a tiny country on the Mediterranean coast surrounded by France. With only about 39,000 people, it has the highest density in the world at around 19,000 people per square kilometer.
