I Regret Asking Onigiri How To Say Corn In CantoneseAdded:
Do you have a pager? Uh, I did. My dad had a pager and I to this day I never knew how it worked because he'll be like, "Oh, my office paging." And I'm like, "What?" Yeah, I never understood it. It was the one tech that I never used that I I still to this day didn't understand. Like when I saw it in the movies, I'm like, "I don't understand how this is working."
>> Yeah, like is it is it like a message?
Is it Some people were saying, "Oh, cuz it's a code." And I'm like, "Well, so So 1 2 3 4 means come to the office stat."
And then 5 4 3 1 is like Gigi is an old chat. She's ancient. There's a difference. I'm not that ancient.
Eternally Eternally, I feel 21 and 3/4.
>> Nice. Which is That's how old I am exactly, actually. I had a black I had a black and white TV when I was growing up in my room. I had a black and white TV.
>> Do you have Did you have the one that has a little antenna? And then you have to shift it and then you have to smack it and you have to get up to physically change the channel.
>> My favorite part was recording shows with the VHS. Like I would I would record re-runs of Family Guy late at night and then like watch them when I woke up. Oh, I I never did it for myself cuz I didn't want to get in trouble, but my mom would like I don't want to You think What do you My parents were very strict.
But then my mom would ask me to record the news sometimes if she's going to miss it cuz she's coming home late or like I don't know.
>> playing the news 24/7. What do you mean?
No, the one that comes on at 6:00 p.m.
every day, the Chinese one. Um The Chinese one?
>> Uh The Chinese news?
>> Yeah, there's like a Chinese Canadian news.
>> Dude, that's sick. It was You have to get cable for it. It was Canada based in Canada. And it plays Chinese programming in Mandarin and Cantonese. And then sometimes if we're like if because of like swimming lessons, let's say, I might miss like the 8:00 p.m. Chinese drama or something. My mom We watch it as a family. My mom will like record it and then we'll watch it later. But I never really recorded my own shows. I wouldn't dare.
I'm I'm not I'm not a I'm not that wild like that.
>> That's cool. I need to control myself.
Or else my mom will be upset.
>> did not grow up watching Chinese news.
>> [laughter] >> I should have. My I would have learned some culture.
>> No, no, it's really it's really boring.
Like my I think my parents learned formal Cantonese from the news because it's only in Cantonese, but I learned casual Cantonese from my friends. So when I told my mom, "Hey, I think I kind of understand Cantonese now." She's like, "Finally, it's been so many years." Like I understood the news. And I was like, "No, you're right. You're right, but it's okay that I'm here now."
And then um and then I was like I think we're watching like a the Cantonese version of one of the dramas, which is casual. And then I was like, "Oh, that's so funny." My mom was like, "You understand?" And I'm like, "I thought you understand Cantonese." And and she was like, "Yeah, but this is not how they speak in the news." And I didn't [snorts] realize there was a difference until my Cantonese friends can also not understand Cantonese news because it's basically Mandarin in a Cantonese accent. But no one speaks like that from day to day.
>> So do you Do you understand Mandarin then? Yeah, Mandarin is my mother tongue. So I do understand Mandarin.
That's neat. So I was So I that's when I realized that >> read Mandarin, too?
I can. I was way better before when I used to go to China.
>> saying it's like cheating when you come to Japan then? A little bit. So when I No, no. In Mandarin, Mainland Chinese is simplified Chinese. Yeah, yeah. But kanji is traditional. But >> That's got to be like the biggest dog on Chinese ever getting a language called simplified. It's like when we do it in English, we do the American one. We're like simplified. Simplified English. Not complicated. Yeah, like when I used to learn in the free government school or whatever, it was traditional. I'm not sure why. So I was learning it and I was like, "Oh my god, these brush strokes are so small."
And then like my little words would get muggier and muggier. And then my mom was like, "Oh, in Mandarin, we don't write it like that. It's just three strokes."
And I'm like, "What the [ __ ] Why is the school teaching me traditional?" But I did end up going to a Taiwanese church, which uses traditional Chinese. So I don't my standard My simplified Mandarin is still better, but that experience helped me with learning kanji. What What is with this corn thing they keep asking you for? Can you tell Connor what is corn in suk mai?
Oh, suk mai? Damn.
That's unfortunate. Suk mai.
I said it. Are you happy now? Are you happy now, chat?
Is this suk mai nuts? It's just suk mai.
>> Uh corn is suk mai.
The intonation doesn't help >> [laughter] >> it with this. Oh, did I not do a good job here?
>> Oh, no, just that one particular one looked was looking a little It was insulting me with how big it was.
Other than that, everything else is Suk [snorts] mai. Damn. Uh There was also one that like everybody likes to like teach people if their Cantonese is like, "Oh, what's a What's a taxi?" Which is dik si. "What's flower?" Uh fa. "What's bridge?" Kew. "So what's flower bridge? [ __ ] you." Like [ __ ] you.
And then it was like, "Flower bridge taxi, [ __ ] you.
[ __ ] you, dik si." or whatever, you know. Oh, no.
>> So it's like a classic thing that people would ask. That's the stupidest >> can speak fluent Chinese?
How many what?
>> Viewers do you have? Like is Are there like a lot of people who speak Chinese who A lot more than I thought, but I think most of them are from Southeast Asia, not because I'm actually from China cuz I think China maybe the VPN thing. But I have a few that are maybe like they don't live in Taiwan, but they're like they have family that used to be Taiwanese or something.
Um and also Southeast Asian because they also They can all speak Chinese. Like some people will type in Chinese to me.
And I'll just respond to them.
>> Yeah, like I see I see that.
This uh this auntie and me, this auntie is so pretty so pretty. But some of them just go on Google Translate and I'm just like, "What the [ __ ] are you saying?"
And then I'm like, "Oh, it's a Google Translate from English. That's why it doesn't make no sense."
So it kind of just depends.
