He saw, in other words, a working structure built by a 16-year-old girl according to specifications that he, an educated man with two years of natural philosophy at a college in Wisconsin, could recognize as sound. He stood there with his notebook open and his pencil in his hand. He looked at Clara Voss.

Winter was coming. The real winter. And nobody in Yankton, not even Clara Voss herself yet, understood how cold it was going to get. Part one, the cursed claim. January 2nd, 1877.
The morning after, Gunner Hol stood at the window of his timber frame house with both hands wrapped in flannel. The skin on his right palm had cracked open during the night. He could not feel his fingertips.
The thermometer outside his door read 17 below zero. And that was a warm reading compared to what the storm had brought.
Out beyond the frozen river bottoms, men were walking the snow drifts with shovels. They were not digging out wagons. They were digging out bodies.
Four people in the Yankton settlement had died over the last three nights. Two old men whose wood ran out. A young couple who got disoriented walking the 50 yards between their cabin and their barn. An infant who could not hold his own body heat in a shack. The wind tore through like cheesecloth.
Their names would be in the newspaper by Wednesday. Their graves would have to wait until the spring thaw because the ground was harder than iron. Gunner Holst was 42 years old. He had been a homesteader on Dakota soil for three years running. He had buried a barn fire, two horses, and one wife's miscarriage. From a dwelling that no grown man in Yankton had believed could last past Christmas, and it was still there, burning low, burning steady, burning the way fire burns when somebody knows what they are doing. Gunnar Hol pressed his forehead against the cold glass and closed his eyes. He had been wrong about a great many things in his life. He had been wrong about wives and wrong about weather and wrong about which way certain rivers ran. But of all the things he had ever been wrong about, he had never been wrong about a 16-year-old girl.
Until now, let us go back 43 days before that frozen January morning. Let us go back to the day she arrived.
November 15th, 1876.
The wagon road south of Yankton ran through buffalo grass that the autumn wind had bleached the color of old bone.
Clara Voss came down that road on foot carrying a canvas bundle in her left hand and her mother's Bible against her chest. She wore a black wool coat that had been her mother's two sizes too large in the shoulders and a pair of boots that had been her stepfather's two sizes too large in the toes. There was straw stuffed in the boots to keep her feet from sliding inside them. She was 16 years old. She had brown hair pulled into a single braid down her back. She had eyes the color of slate after rain.
She weighed perhaps 110 lbs with the coat on. 43 days earlier, she had buried her mother. 6 months before that, her mother had survived the chalera that took half a dozen others in the river settlements along the Missouri. The survival had been temporary. By April, her mother was thin enough to count her ribs. By August, she had stopped getting out of bed. By the end of September, Clara had washed her body for the last time and laid out her funeral dress and watched her stepfather, Henrik Voss, stand at the foot of the grave and remove his hat. For exactly the time it took the preacher to finish a single psalm. 6 months later, he had married again.
The new wife was a widow from Sou Falls.
She had four children of her own and no patience for the daughter of a dead first wife. She told Henrik so directly.
Henrik agreed. Two arrangements were offered to Claravos on the morning of November 12th, 1876.
The first was a marriage to a 47year-old widowerower from Sou Falls who had buried two wives already and was looking for a third.
and who had inspected Claraara across a parlor table the way a buyer inspects a heer at auction. The second was the road. She had walked out within the hour. She did not cry. She did not pack.
She took the coat and the boots and the Bible and the bundle her mother had left for her, hidden under a loose board in the kitchen pantry where her stepfather never looked.
She walked out the door and down the lane, and she did not turn around because she knew if she turned around, she would see her stepfather watching her go with no expression on his face at all. And she did not want to carry that picture with her into whatever came next. What came next was 3 days of walking south. And now on the 15th of November with the wind cutting across the prairie like a blade drawn slowly through cloth. She stopped at the edge of a quarter section of land on the south side of the Missouri bluffs. She looked at the southacing hill. She looked at the empty sky above it. She set her bundle down in the buffalo grass, sat down beside it, and opened her mother's Bible for the first time since the funeral. She had carried that Bible for 3 days without opening it. Not out of grief, out of something closer to fear, because she knew her mother. And she knew that her mother, in the last weeks of her life, when she could no longer eat solid food, and her voice had dropped to a whisper, had spent every spare hour writing. Writing what Claraara did not know. Now she opened the front cover and turned the first page.
There was a folded paper tucked against the spine. She drew it out with her thumb. The paper had been folded into eighths, pressed flat by years of weight. Inside the fold her mother had written in pencil in a hand that grew weaker line by line, but never illeible.
Daughter, this money is for building a home. It is not for living in another woman's kitchen. It is not for marrying a man you do not love. Take it and build. The notes that follow will tell you how.
There were $247 in old banknotes wrapped inside that paper. And behind that paper, slipped between pages in the back of the Bible, there were four more sheets, pencil drawings, cross-sections of a hillside dwelling, measurements written in her mother's careful script, notes on sod thickness, roof angles, chimney draft, floor drainage, notes on which direction a door must face to keep the worst of the wind out. Notes on what depth a man must dig to reach earth that did not freeze. Notes from a woman who had known she would not be alive to teach her daughter in person. He did not remember her face, but the land agent who sold her the parcel did remember her face because the parcel she chose was the parcel nobody wanted. The land agent was a thin man in a stained vest who ran a one- room office on the north end of the settlement. When Claraara walked in and pointed at the southacing quarter section on his handdrawn map, he set down his pen and looked at her over the top of his spectacles. "That land, uh," he said carefully, has a history. "I know," Claraara said. "Do you now?" A man died on it two winters back. Found frozen in his cabin in February of 75. The land agent leaned back in his chair. That's right. Caleb Marorrow. Nice enough fellow tried to homestead alone. Folks in town say the ground is bad. Folks in town are wrong. The land agent raised one eyebrow. Clara set the filing receipt on his desk. How much for the parcel for that one? $10 even. Nobody's bid on it in 14 months.
She counted out $10 from the inside pocket of the wool coat and slid the bills across the desk. She walked out of the office with a deed in her hand and $428 in cash remaining, including what her mother had left her and what she herself had saved over four years of selling eggs at Fort Randall before her mother got sick. The cabin was still there. Two winters of weather had not knocked it down. It was a four-walled timber frame structure 8 ft by 10, sitting on flat ground at the bottom of the slope.
The door faced north. The single window faced east. There was no porch. There was no chimney left. Only a black scar on the roof where the stove pipe had once gone through. Claraara walked all the way around it. She studied the way it sat on the ground, the way the wind would hit it from three sides without anything to break the force, the way the sun would strike the north-facing door for exactly 0 hours per day in the middle of winter when the sun ran a low arc across the southern sky. She looked up the slope behind the cabin. The hill rose perhaps 30 ft southacing.
catching the low winter sun from morning until late afternoon. A gentle natural curve in the land that would shield a structure from the north wind on three sides. If a person had the sense to build into it instead of beside it.

The temperature dropped to 8° above zero. She woke shivering but alive, and she walked into town the next morning to find labor. She found the Dorner brothers behind the livery stable splitting wood for 15 cents an hour. Sam Dorner was 17. Eli Dorner was 15. Their father had 11 children.
Six of them boys and not enough land for any of them to inherit. The two older boys hired themselves out wherever they could. They were lean and quiet and they had the kind of arms that come from lifting things every day from the age of eight. Clara offered them 50 cents a day each. Sam Dorner stopped splitting wood.
He looked at Eli. Eli looked at him. 50 cents a day for what work, miss? Sam asked. Digging and building 19 days, I figure. Maybe 20. Building what? A house. The brothers exchanged another look. Where? Eli said. South of town.
The Marorrow place. The wood splitting stopped entirely. Miss, Sam said in the careful voice a young man uses when he thinks an older person has misheard him.
That land has a history. I have heard a man died there. He built the wrong house in the wrong place. I am building a different house. What kind of house?
Into the hill. The brothers stared at her. Like a root seller, Eli said.
Bigger than a root cellar. big enough to live in. Sam Dorner set down his axe. He was a serious boy. He had a habit of thinking before he spoke that made him seem older than he was. Miss with respect. Folks have tried that before out east. The dirt collapses on you. The damp gets into your lungs. You get the consumption and you do not last the year. I have plans for that. He looked at the crosssections, the drainage angles, the chimney path, the double wall construction with the dead air gap, the roof timber spacing, the saw brick dimensions, the depth of cut, the orientation of the door. He looked at his brother. He looked at Clara. Who drew these? My mother. Your mother was an engineer.
My mother was a farm wife from central Sweden. Her people built into hillsides for 600 years. She wrote down what she knew before she died.
Sam Dorner read the pages a second time.

He stopped his horse 20 ft from where Clara was driving the survey stakes for the cut line and he sat there for a full minute without speaking watching her work. Then he climbed down. You are the Voss girl. I am.
You filed on the Marorrow parcel. I did.
He walked across the buffalo grass and stopped at the line of stakes. He looked at the depth of cut she had marked. He looked at the angle. He looked up the slope toward where the back wall would go. He removed his hat. He scratched the back of his head.
The earth, he said, is a heavy thing. It is.
It will press down on whatever you put under it. It will. You understand that the roof of a hole in the ground is not the same as the roof of a house. I understand. And you have arranged for the kind of timber that does not break.
I have arranged for six lodgepole pines from the Black Hills, 8 in in diameter, 30 in apart, spaced like rafters, but laid like floor joists upside down. Gunner Hol turned and looked at her. It is hard to describe what passed across his face in that moment. It was not surprise. It was the absence of a particular kind of expectation that a man like Gunner Hol carries with him every day of his life.
The expectation that a 16-year-old girl from somewhere up the river does not know what a lodgepole pine is or what a rafter is or what 30 in between supports means in terms of the loadbearing capacity of a buried roof. You will be digging yourself a hole that fills with cold air. You will be a potato in a cellar, Miss Voss. Frozen by Christmas. The earth 6 ft down stays warmer than the air. I have read about it. The second skeptic came two days later. His name was Wilhelm Kesler, and before he came to Dakota Territory, he had been a stonemason in Hamburg for the better part of two decades. He had built his own house in the settlement out of dressed limestone hauled by ox cart from a quarry 40 mi east. He had laid every stone himself with mortar mixed to a specification he had perfected at the age of 24.
His house was the finest in the county and he knew it and so did everybody else. He was 44 years old. He had hands like dried oak. He spoke English the way a careful man speaks any language that is not his first, which is to say with precision and with the patience to wait for the right word.
He arrived at Clara's claim on the third day of construction. The cut into the hillside was already 4 ft deep. Sam and Eli Dorner were shoveling earth onto the tarp that Clara had spread to catch the spoil. The earth would be used. Nothing on this site would be wasted. Wilhelm Kesler walked the perimeter of the cut.
He looked at the way the floor was being graded. He looked at the angle of the slope toward the entrance. He looked at the location where the chimney path was marked on the back wall. He turned to Clara. Miss Voss. Yes, sir. Underground the air does not move. Without moving air, moisture collects. Without moisture going somewhere, mold grows. Without ventilation, your lungs will fill with the breath you breathed yesterday. I have planned for ventilation.
How? The door cracks an inch at the top.
The chimney pulls air through the dwelling. The floor drains toward the entrance and carries any standing water out. You will leave the door open in winter. one inch at the top where the warm air rises and exchanges with the cold outside.
The cold sinks to the floor and rolls out the bottom gap. The exchange is constant but small.
Wilhelm Kesler said nothing. He walked back to the chimney path and squatted down. This is claylined.

for three weeks before I arrived. I had it laid by a man in town who fires bricks for the kils.
You ordered clay pipe before you even arrived. I ordered it from St. Paul in September.
It came down the river before the ice.
Wilhelm Kesler stayed in that crouch position for a long time. When he finally stood up, his knees cracked audibly in the cold air. He looked at Clara. I trained four years to be allowed to lay a foundation. Four years.

A wife who had not wanted to come three children who blamed him for the move and a deeply held conviction that the frontier was a place that needed civilizing and that he was the man to do it. He held church services in the front parlor of his white painted clappered house on Sundays. He preached on the dignity of labor, the sanctity of marriage, and the importance of presenting a proper face to the world.
He was 48 years old. He stood 5'7.
He always wore a black coat. He rode up to Claraara's claim on a gray geling. He did not dismount.
Miss Voss, Reverend, I have heard about your enterprise.
Yes, sir. He looked at the cut in the hillside. He looked at the Dorner brothers who had paused in their shoveling to watch him.
This, he said, is not a Christian way to live. I am not sure I follow, sir. A young woman of 16 years living alone in a hole in the earth, three miles from town, with no chaperone, with no family, with no community oversight of any kind.
I have a homestead claim. The claim is legal. The claim is not the question.
The question is decency. The question is what kind of woman lives this way. The question is what people will say. The question is whether you understand the position you are placing yourself in and the position you are placing the community in by tolerating it.
Clara stood with the shovel in her hand.
The Dorner brothers had not gone back to work. Reverend Hail, yes, with respect, I am not asking the community to tolerate anything. I am asking the community to leave me alone. That is not how a community works, Miss Voss. It is how this one is going to work, sir, for me.
Because I have nowhere else to go. She did not raise her voice. She did not change her tone. She said it the way a person states a fact about the weather.
Reverend Hail looked at her for a long moment. Then he did something Claraara did not expect. He looked at the cut into the hillside, at the careful grade, at the squared corners, at the sod bricks stacked under the tarp at the bottom of the slope, at the lodgepole timbers already delivered lying in a neat row beside the cut.
For just a moment, something moved behind his eyes that was not judgment.
Then it passed. "You will fail, Miss Voss," he said. and when you do, the church will be here to receive you. We do not turn away the prodigal. He turned the geling and rode back down toward town.
The Dorner brothers went back to shoveling. Eli Dorner said under his breath. I do not think he wanted to be wrong about you, miss.

He had a thin sandy mustache and round wire rim spectacles. and the soft, watchful eyes of a man who had spent more of his life reading than living. He arrived on the 11th day of construction with a leather satchel slung over his shoulder.
He smiled when Claraara looked up from her work. He extended his hand. Miss Voss, Emory Fitch, I teach the school in town. I have heard the name. I have been curious about your project. I hope you do not mind my coming out to take a look. Curiosity is not against the law.
He laughed. It was a kind laugh and an honest one as far as it went. He set down his satchel. He pulled out a notebook and a pencil. Would you mind if I made some notes? Notes for what?
Personal interest mostly. I find construction methods fascinating. and the editor at the Free Press has indicated he might be interested in a piece on settlement practices this season. He smiled again.
Here is what Emory Fitch did not say.
The editor of the Dakota Free Press had assigned him a specific story two weeks earlier. The story had a working title that the editor had written in pencil at the top of the assignment slip. The title was The Dangers of Amateur Construction on the Frontier. He had not thought hard about the ethics of it until he stood at the edge of Claravos's claim on the 11th day of construction and saw what she had built. He saw the depth of cut, the squared corners, the grade of the floor, the double wall construction taking shape, the dead air gap, the carefully positioned chimney path, the large pole timbers already in place, evenly space-sized for the load.
He saw, in other words, a working structure built by a 16-year-old girl according to specifications that he, an educated man with two years of natural philosophy at a college in Wisconsin, could recognize as sound. He stood there with his notebook open and his pencil in his hand. He looked at Clara Voss. He did not say what he had come to say.
Instead, he said, "Miss Voss, where did you learn this? My mother left me drawings. May I see them? No, of course.
Of course not. Forgive me. She watched him for a long moment. Then she said, "You can ask me questions. I will answer the ones I want to." "Thank you." He asked questions. He took notes. He stayed for 2 hours. When he walked back down the hill at the end of that day, he had 31 pages of notes in his satchel.
He did not yet know that he was going to throw out every word of the story he had been assigned to write, but he was beginning to suspect it. Construction took 19 days. Yes. My brother and I did not believe this would work. We took your money because we needed your money. I am telling you now with my hand on the lintil of your door. I would not trade my own father's house for this one in January. He tipped his hat. The brothers walked down the hill. Claravas stood alone at the doorway of her dwelling.
The afternoon sun was angling low across the south. The temperature was 19°.
The smoke from her stove was rising in a thin, clean line from the crown of the hill behind her. She stepped inside. She closed the door. She set her mother's Bible on the small table she had built from cottonwood planks. She sat down on the rope bed in the corner. She listened to the wind outside.
The wind was loud. Inside where she was, it was almost completely silent. That night, while Clara Voss slept in her hillside dwelling, the men in the settlement of Yankton placed their bets.
It was not formal bedding. Nobody wrote anything down. But over coffee at the general store and over beer at the tavern on the river road, and over after dinner pipes in front parlors, the men of the settlement compared their predictions. Gunner Hol said she would be dead by the third week of January. He gave her credit for the build, but he did not believe the design would hold against the kind of cold that was still coming.
Wilhelm Kesler said February, maybe early March. He thought the moisture would get her before the cold did.
Reverend Edmund Hail said she would come down off that hill of her own accord by the new year, looking for charity, and that the church would take her in because that was what the church was for. Of the men in town, only one did not place a prediction.
That was Emory Fitch.
He sat at the back of the tavern with a glass of beer he had not touched, and he listened to the other men talk, and he did not say a word.
He had 31 pages of notes in his satchel.
He had a story to write. He did not yet know what the story was going to say, but he knew by the night of December 4th, 1876 that it was not going to say what the editor of the Dakota Free Press had paid him to make it say.
He was going to write the truth. The wind started at 2:00 in the morning on the 29th of December. It did not start the way wind usually starts. It did not build slowly out of the north and grow into something larger. It arrived all at once the way a freight train arrives at a station, complete and full and louder than anything a person had ever heard before.
One minute the prairie was silent. The next minute the prairie was a single howling throat open from the Canadian border to the Missouri bluffs and every dwelling on that prairie was inside the throat. Clarivos came awake in the dark of her dugout. She did not sit up at first. She lay on the rope bed with her eyes open and listened. The lamp on the small table had gone out hours before.
The stove had burned down to coals. The dugout was 62° give or take, and the air was still, and the only sound inside was her own breathing, slow and even. The way a person breathes when they are not yet sure whether to be afraid. above her head beyond 14 in of sod and 8 in of lodgepole pine and 4 feet of hillside earth. The wind was tearing the world apart.
She could not hear it. She could feel it. She could feel the faintest tremor in the air pressure.
A subtle shift the way the inside of a deep cave shifts when something massive moves in the sky outside.
The wind was so loud that it had stopped being sound and become weight. The whole prairie was bending under it. Clara Voss got up. She did not hurry. She crossed the packed earth floor in stocking feet.
She knelt at the stove. She opened the door fed in three split lengths of seasoned oak and watched the coals catch. She closed the stove door. She crossed back to the small table and lit the lamp from a tin matchbox. The lamp flame did not move. There was no draft inside the dugout to move it. She walked to the front door. She set her palm flat against the inside of the cottonwood planks. The wood was cold, not freezing.
Cold the way the inside of a cellar door is cold on a winter morning. She could feel very faintly the vibration of the wind hitting the outside face of the door. She looked at the thermometer she had nailed to the wall beside the door.
The thermometer read 54°. She had let the fire die overnight. The dugout had dropped from 64 to 54 in the hours she slept, not from cold leaking in from the natural cooling of any sealed space when no heat was being added. The math was simple, and Claravos did the math without needing to think about it. The dugout was losing roughly one degree per hour with no fire. The walls were holding their stored heat. The earth around her was holding its stored heat.
The twoft dead air gap was doing its work. Outside, the temperature was 31° below zero and dropping. Inside, with one small fire, she would be warm. She fed the stove again. She set a kettle of water on the iron plate. She sat down at the small table and opened her mother's Bible. She did not read it. She simply sat with it open, the way a person sits with a hand on the shoulder of someone they love.
She listened to the wind that she could feel but could not hear.
She thought about the four families she knew who lived in timber frame houses to the north of her.
She thought about Gunner Hol's ran mare in its open shed.
She thought about Wilhelm Kesler's stone house and how the moisture would be condensing on the inside of those beautiful dressed limestone walls right now, freezing as it formed, drawing the heat out of the air faster than any stove could put it back. She thought about Reverend Edmund Hail's white painted clabbered house. The house that looked like it belonged on a village green in Massachusetts.
The house with the front porch that faced the road the way a proper house was supposed to. She thought, but she did not pray. She had stopped praying somewhere on the road south 3 days after she walked out of her stepfather's lane.
She did not blame God. She had simply realized in those three days that the help she was going to get in this world she was going to give to herself.
The kettle began to whistle. She made coffee. She drank it slowly, watching the lamp flame, listening to the silence inside her walls.
The storm went on for 70 hours in Gunner Hol's house. The first crisis came at 4 in the morning of the first night.
The wind tore three boards loose from the north siding of his timber frame structure. The boards did not blow away.
They tore loose at the top and hung their flapping opening a vertical gap 2 in wide at the seam. Through that gap, the wind came in. It came in steady and hard like water from a broken pipe.
Gunner Hol climbed up into the attic with a hammer and a fistful of nails and his hands already going numb.
He stood on a chair against the inside of the north wall and tried to drive the nails through the boards from inside.
The wood was frozen so hard that the nails bent under his hammer. He bent four nails in a row. He climbed back down and went to the wood pile and pulled out three of his wife's good chairs and broke them apart for kindling because the cordwood was running too fast. And he could already see that he was not going to make it through three nights on what he had stacked. His two children, ages four and seven, were sleeping in the kitchen on a pallet of quilts pulled as close to the stove as he dared. His wife had wrapped them in everything in the house that was not already on a body. Her own coat, his winter coat, the horse blanket from the shed, the good wool throw her mother had sent from Norway 4 years before. By 6:00 in the morning of that first night, the kitchen had dropped to 38°. Gunner Hol stood in the kitchen with his bent nails on the floor at his feet and he looked at his wife and he did not say anything because there was nothing to say. In Wilhelm Kesler's stone house, the moisture problem became something worse than a problem. The dressed limestone walls beautiful in summer were drawing every degree of warmth out of the air inside the house. The condensation that formed on the inside of those walls began to freeze. Long needles of frost grew inward from the stone toward the room. Wilhelm's wife brought their youngest daughter, a six-year-old named Greta, to the parlor stove and unwrapped her wool stockings to inspect her feet.
The two smallest toes on her left foot were white, not the pink white of cold, the hard, chalky white of tissue that had stopped getting blood. Wilhelm Kesler, who had laid every stone of that house with his own hands, stood in his parlor and watched his wife rub his daughter's foot with a piece of warmed flannel. And he understood with the part of his mind that had spent 20 years learning the precise behavior of materials that he had built, the wrong house for this place.
He had built a Hamburg house. He had built it perfectly, and perfectly was not the same thing as correctly. He did not say this out loud. He went into the kitchen and split more wood. In Reverend Edmund Hail's white clabbered house, his wife Elellanar stood up from her chair on the second night of the storm to tend the parlor stove, and her knees folded under her. She went down without warning. Her head struck the corner of the wooden settle as she fell. She did not strike hard, but she did not get up.
Reverend Hail knelt beside her. He spoke her name. He patted her cheek. Her eyelids fluttered. She tried to focus on his face. She did not seem to recognize him. He carried her to the front parlor where the stove still burned. He laid her on the rag rug. He covered her with every quilt in the house. He sat down beside her and took her hand. The hand was cold, not freezing.
Cold the way a hand gets when the body has decided to abandon the extremities in order to keep the heart warm. He thought about the Vos girl. He thought about it for a long time. He had ridden out to her dugout the night before the storm. He had ridden out in the dark and tied his horse to the willow stake at the foot of her hill. He had walked up the slope with a coat collar pulled to his ears and he had knocked on her cottonwood door and she had let him in.
He had sat in a chair by her stove for almost 10 minutes without saying anything.
He had felt the warmth on his face. He had looked at the simple, careful arrangement of her dwelling. He had looked at the unpainted shelves cut into the back wall, the rope bed in the corner, the small table where her mother's Bible sat with two pencil marks on the inside cover. He had said to her almost in a whisper that he had been wrong. He had said that he did not yet know how to say so in public, but he wanted her to know. He had ridden home before dawn. Now he sat by his unconscious wife on the rag rug of his beautiful Massachusetts house and he thought about the Voss girl and he thought about pride and about which of those two things had built a place that could keep a person warm. Eleanor Hail survived the night. She survived because Reverend Hail fed every stick of wood he owned into that parlor stove between midnight and dawn. He burned through three days of cordwood in 7 hours.
By sunrise of the third day of the storm, he was breaking down the kitchen table to feed the fire.
He did not regret it. By midnight of the second night of the storm, Gunner Hol made a decision.
It was the hardest decision of his life.
His wife was huddled on the kitchen pallet with both children pressed against her body. His youngest, the four-year-old boy, was crying in long, shallow gasps that the wind outside was loud enough to almost cover. The temperature in the kitchen had dropped to 26°.
He had burned the chairs, the kitchen table, and one of the bed frames. He had perhaps 4 hours of fuel left. The closest dwelling to his own was 2 and 1/2 miles to the southeast. Through the storm, 2 and 1/2 miles was a death march. He knew this. He had buried two men in Dakota who had tried shorter walks than that in better weather. But the dwelling at the end of those 2 and 1/2 miles was the only one he was certain was still standing.
He had stood at his own window that morning and seen the thin gray smoke rising from the south hill, steady and patient. As if nothing at all was happening to the world outside, he put on his coat. He wrapped his face in the wool scarf his wife had knitted him three winters before. He pulled his hat low. He picked up his four-year-old son with his right arm and held the boy against his chest under the coat. He told his wife to wrap the seven-year-old daughter the same way and follow him exactly step for step. Do not stop. Do not let go. His wife did not argue. She had been married to him long enough to know what it cost him to ask. They walked out into the storm. The wind tried to take them off their feet. The wind tried to push them sideways. The cold was so deep that Gunner Hol could feel the moisture inside his nostrils, freezing as he breathed. He kept his head down. He kept his bearings by the line of fence posts. His son had stopped crying.
The four-year-old had gone quiet against his chest in a way that frightened him more than the crying had.
He climbed the slope. He stopped at the Cottonwood door. He stood there for a moment with his free hand raised to knock and he understood that the knock he was about to make was the loudest thing he had ever done in his life.
Louder than any argument, louder than any victory, louder than the day he had buried his first house, louder than his own wedding.
He knocked. The door opened almost at once. Claravas stood in the doorway in a brown wool dress and an apron and a single oil lamp held up at shoulder height. The light from the lamp fell across Gunner Hol's face and across the small bundled shape inside his coat. She did not look surprised. She did not say a word. She stepped back. She opened the door wider. Gunnar Hol's wife came up the slope behind him with their daughter wrapped against her body. The two of them came through the door and Clara closed it behind them and the wind stopped.
Inside the dugout was 63°.
Gunner Hol set his son down carefully on the rope bed. The boy was alive.
The boy's eyes were open. The boy was looking at the lamp and at the warmth of the stove in the corner and at the strange low ceiling of woven timbers and packed earth. The boy said one word. He said, "Warm." Gunner Holst sat down on the floor with his back against the inside wall of the dugout. He was 42 years old. He had not cried since his mother's funeral when he was nine. He did not cry now because he was a Norwegian and because he had been taught at the age of three that crying was for women and small children and not for him.
But something happened in his chest that he did not have a word for.
something that was not quite the same as crying, but lived in the same neighborhood.
A pressure that built up behind his ribs and pushed against the inside of his throat and stayed there with nowhere to go. He did not look at Claravos. He could not. Six people in 192 square ft.
The dugout absorbed them. It did not even feel crowded.
The thermal mass of the walls and the floor and the ceiling drank the cold off their bodies and gave back warmth even in steady and patient. The way the earth itself gives warmth to a planted seed.
Claravos heated a pot of beans and salt pork on the stove. She heated water for coffee. She gave Gunnar Hol's wife a wool blanket from her own bed.
She unwrapped the four-year-old boy's feet and examined his toes by lamplight.
The toes were pink. He had not been outside long enough for damage. She did not say anything about the journey. She did not say anything about the prediction Gunner Hol had made in November. When he had told her she would be a frozen potato in a cellar by Christmas, she fed them. That was all.
She fed them and she banked the stove for the night. And she gave up her own bed to Gunner's wife and the two children. And she pulled a folded canvas tarp off the storage shelf and made herself a place to sleep on the floor by the door. Gunner Hol sat awake against the wall for three more hours, watching the sleeping shapes of his wife and his children, in the steady lamplight, listening to the wind that he could no longer hear.
and he thought about every prediction he had made about her in the last 40 days.
And he understood that he had not been wrong about any of them by accident.
He had been wrong on purpose. He had been wrong because being right would have meant admitting that a 16-year-old girl had seen something that he with his three years of Dakota Winters had not.
He did not sleep that night, but he did not freeze either. And his children did not freeze, and his wife did not freeze.
And in the morning, the storm was still going, and the dugout was still 61°, and Claravas was making cornmeal porridge on the stove, as if nothing about the situation required comment. The wind died at sunrise on the morning of January 1st, 1877.
It did not die gradually.
It died the way it had started all at once with no warning. One moment the prairie was the inside of the throat and the next moment the throat was silent.
The silence after a three-day storm is its own kind of sound.
It is a sound that presses on the ears.
It is the sound of a world that has stopped moving.
Claravas opened the cottonwood door. The snow drift outside the door reached above her shoulder. She and Gunner Hol spent the next two hours digging out.
They cut steps into the drift with the same shovels she had used to build the dugout in November. When they finally cleared a path to the open prairie, the sun was up over the eastern bluffs, and the temperature was 42° below zero, and the surface of the snow was a single smooth crust as far as the eye could see. Gunnar Holst, his wife, and their two children stayed in Claraara's dugout for one more day while the temperature climbed slowly back to a manageable cold.
Then they walked home through the broken country and found that the north wall of their house had buckled inward, but the roof had held, and they were able, after a week of hard work, to make the dwelling weathertight again. Gunner Holse did not speak about what had happened. He did not speak about it to his wife. He did not speak about it to his neighbors. He did not speak about it to Clara Voss. He would not speak about it for the rest of his life. But in the spring of 1877, when the frost came out of the ground, Gunner Hol dug a 4-ft trench around the north and east sides of his timber frame house, and he piled the spoil against the lower courses of his outer walls until those walls were buried to a height of 3 ft on three sides.
He banked his house against the earth.
He cut his winter wood consumption by half. He never told anyone where the idea came from, but everyone in Yankton knew. Everyone in Yankton had seen the smoke rising from the South Hill on January 1st. Everyone in Yankton had counted the dead.
There were four of them. Old Jensen, who had run out of Cordwood on the second night of the storm and had been found sitting upright in his chair with a Bible in his lap.
The Henderson couple, Lars and Annette, who had tried to walk the 50 yards between their house and their barn during a lull in the storm and had been found the next morning 15 ft apart. Both of them face down. Both of them frozen so hard their bodies had to be carried out of the snow on sleds.
and the infant Marcus Brand, nine months old, who had not been able to maintain his own body heat in a claim shack that the wind had emptied of warmth in less than 4 hours. Clara Voss walked into Yankton on the afternoon of January 2nd.
She brought with her a wool sack containing six loaves of cornbread she had baked that morning, eight quarts of dried beans, 2 lbs of salt pork, and a small clay jar of honey that had been one of the last things her mother had ever given her. Kept hidden at the back of the storage shelf in case of true need, she walked first to the Bran family's claim. The shack was empty by then. The baby had been buried in a snowdrift wrapped in his mother's apron.
Because the ground was too hard to dig a real grave, and because nobody could bear to leave him in the open. Clara left the cornbread and the beans on the table, she walked next to the Henderson farm. The bodies had already been moved to the ice house at the back of the livery, where they would wait until April for proper burial. Claraara left food at the house with the Henderson's grown nephew who had ridden in from the next county that morning. She walked next to Wilhelm Kesler's stone house.
Wilhelm Kesler answered the door himself.
He had not slept in 3 days. His eyes were red and small in his face. He looked at Clara on his porch with the wool sack in her hands and his face did something complicated that she did not have a name for. She gave him the sack.
He did not refuse it. He said, "Greta is going to lose the two smallest toes on her left foot." Claraara said, "I am sorry." He said, "Do not be sorry. You did not do it." She said, "If you would like, I can show you how to bank Earth against the north and west walls in the spring. It will not solve the moisture in stone, but it will hold the heat better.
Wilhelm Kesler stood in his doorway with the wool sack in his hands. He nodded once. He looked down at the porch boards. He nodded again. He said, "Come in, Miss Voss. Please, we will have coffee." She did not go in. She did not have to. She had given him the only thing he needed, which was the chance to ask her without being asked. She walked back to her dugout through the broken snow. It compared in a side byside column the cordwood consumption of that structure to the cordwood consumption of an average timber frame dwelling of similar interior volume.
The ratio was approximately 1:6. The article ended with three sentences. The first sentence said that the structure had been designed by a 16-year-old homesteader named Clara Voss based on plans drawn by her late mother. The third sentence said that the design deserved serious study by anyone proposing to settle on the northern plains in the years to come. The editor of the Dakota Free Press did not lose his job over the article, but he stopped giving Emory Fitch assignments. It did not matter. Within 3 weeks of the article's publication, Emry Fitch was receiving letters at the schoolhouse in Yankton, letters from settlers in Nebraska, letters from settlers in Montana, letters from a homestead family in the Black Hills who wanted to know if Miss Voss took on consultations, letters from a German farmer in eastern Dakota who said his wife had read the article aloud to him three times. and that he wanted to come and see the dwelling for himself. The drawings showed a modification to his Hamburg stone house, an interior secondary wall 6 in inside the existing stone with a dead air gap between. A method for banking earth against the north and west walls without compromising the foundation. A revised chimney path that would warm the rear masonry instead of venting straight up.
Wilhelm Kesler sat at Claraara's small table and laid the drawings out one by one. He said, "I would like you to look at these. I would like you to tell me where I am wrong."
Claraara said, "Mr. Kesler, you are not wrong. You have already taught yourself." He said, "I would still like your opinion." She gave it. They worked at the table for 3 hours. Each one was adapted to its own particular ground and family. But all 17 used the same core principles. Double walls, dead air gaps, south-facing entries, claylined chimneys angled into the surrounding earth, floors graded for drainage, roofs sized for snow load. Not one of the 17 families lost a member to exposure during the winter of 1877 to 1878.
Not one of them burned through their winter wood supply. Not one of them required the kind of emergency assistance that had been routine for newer settler families before the article. The winter of 1877 to 1878 was longer than the winter before it. It was colder in stretches.
The river froze solid by the 8th of December and did not break up until the third week of March. Supply lines from Sous City were cut for 6 weeks running.
Families in traditional timber frame houses suffered. Some of them gave up.
Three families abandoned their claims that spring and sold out for pennies on the dollar. To neighbors who had built differently. The families in the earth shelter dugouts had wood to spare.
They had food they had stored in their cool back walls. They had money they had not spent on fuel. They had more than anything else the proof that they could stay.
By the spring of 1880, Claraara Voss had consulted on 43 structures across Dakota, Nebraska, and Montana.
By the summer of 1880, she had proven up on her own homestead and filed for a timber claim adjacent to it. She was 20 years old. That June, she married Emory Fitch. The marriage was not a romance.
It was a partnership between two people who had come to respect each other across a question that mattered to both of them and who had discovered in the process of working on that question together that they liked each other very much.
Emory had quit the schoolhouse the year before to write full-time.
He was working on a book about settlement architecture that would not be published until 1889, but that would still be in print in revised editions well into the 20th century.
He needed somebody who knew in her hands and her bones what worked and what did not. Clara Voss needed somebody who could write what she could build. They built a larger dugout on her original claim. 24 ft x 16 with three rooms and two skylights and an advanced ventilation system. Emory had adapted from a mining handbook he had ordered from Cincinnati. They lived in that dwelling for 47 years. They raised four children. None of the four ever caught the consumption Wilhelm Kesler had once warned about. None of them lost toes to frostbite. The oldest, a girl named Margaret, would grow up to be a public school teacher in Bismar. The second, a boy named Caleb, named after the man who had once died in a cabin on the same hillside, would grow up to be a county judge. The third, would marry a doctor and move to Minnesota. The fourth, the youngest, a girl named Anna, would never marry. Anna would inherit the dugout when her mother died and she would live in it herself alone and content for another 19 years after that. The structures Claraara Voss helped design across the northern plains in the years between 1877 and 1900 numbered 87. By the time Emory Fitch finished documenting them, the number of lives saved by those structures was harder to count. The most conservative estimate made by a state historical commission in 1962 put the number at 61. The estimate was based on comparable mortality rates in similar climate zones during similar storm events. The estimate counted only the lives saved directly by the temperature stable interior of the dwellings during specific recorded extreme weather events.
It did not count the children who never caught pneumonia. It did not count the elderly who never developed the slow wasting that came from spending a winter at 38° indoors.
It did not count the families who stayed on the land because they could afford to instead of going back east bankrupt.
The real number was larger than 61.
It was much larger than 61.
Clara Vos Fitch died on the 17th of October 1927. She was 67 years old. She died in her sleep in the south bedroom of the larger dugout she had built with Emory in the years after their marriage.
The bedroom was 62° on the night she died. The outside temperature was 8° above zero. Emory had died 4 years before her of pneumonia he had picked up on a research trip to Saskatchewan in the winter of 1923. He had finished his last book in the spring of that same year and had lived just long enough to hold the first printed copy in his hands. Anna, the youngest daughter, was 40 years old when her mother died. She buried Clara next to Emory in the small cemetery on the bluff above the river.
The headstones were plain. Clara's headstone read only her name, the dates of her life, and one phrase that Anna had chosen herself. The phrase read, "She built warmth from earth." The Yankton newspaper, which had picked up the original article in 1877 and never quite let go of the story across the half century that followed, ran an obituary on the front page. The obituary called Claravos Fitch an architect and an engineer, though she had never studied either formally. It said that her work had saved more lives on the northern plains than any single physician in the territo's history. The article was three columns long. It ended with a sentence that Anna kept clipped from the paper in the front cover of her mother's Bible for the rest of her own long life. The sentence read, "She was 16 years old when she began.
She was right from the first day. The original dugout on the south hill stood until 1948.
A spring flood undercut the slope that year and the front wall collapsed. The interior temperature of that dugout recorded one final time by a county surveyor on the day before the collapse was 53°.
The outside temperature was 8° below zero. The dugout was uninhabited at that time with no stove burning and no resident inside.
It had held its temperature on the strength of its thermal mass alone for 72 years. There is a marker on that hillside. Now, the marker is made of bronze. It sits on a small concrete plinth at the foot of the slope where the original Cottonwood door once opened.
It was placed there in 1976 on the 100th anniversary of the original construction by a historical society made up largely of the descendants of the original families. The marker reads in part that on this site in the winter of 1876, a 16-year-old homesteader named Clara Voss reintroduced the principle of thermal mass construction to settlement architecture on the northern plains, combining Swedish, German, Norwegian, and indigenous building traditions into a single coherent design that solved real problems for real families. It says that her work and the work of her husband Emory Fitch influenced the development of energyefficient construction practices in the region for the next century. It does not say that she was thrown out of her stepfather's house at the age of 16 with nothing but the clothes she was wearing and her mother's Bible. It does not say that the men who were supposed to know better than her were wrong, every one of them, and that she was right on her first try with no formal education and no construction experience and nothing to work with except four pages of pencil notes from a dying woman who had loved her enough to prepare her. But the men who are supposed to know better than her are gone now. Gunnar Halt died in 1899.
He had never spoken about the night he carried his son through the storm to Claravas's door, but he had banked his house and he had taught his sons to bank theirs.
