The Cleveland accent is a regional dialect characterized by a nasal quality and distinctive vowel sounds, particularly a nasal 'A' that makes words like 'cat' sound more nasal and a variant 'O' that transforms 'pop' into 'pap'; this accent is so distinctive that a specific phrase like 'too hot for hockey' can reliably identify whether someone is from the Cleveland area, demonstrating how regional speech patterns serve as markers of geographic identity.

Mike Polk Jr: What exactly is the "Cleveland accent?"Ajouté :
Whether you realize it or not, there is indeed a Cleveland accent, and you probably have one. It's a bit nasal and marked by a distinct A that makes cat sound like cat, and a variant of O that makes pop sound like pap. I'm trying to find a way to put together the perfect sentence to distinguish whether or not someone's from Cleveland. If they just read the sentence, you can tell if they are from Cleveland or not. One of the famous ones actually to detect an Inland North accent is too hot for hockey. I had the perfect phrase. Now, it was just a matter of deceiving the co-workers into thinking I needed them to shoot something else on Zoom so that I could catch them off guard. This is a promo for the YouTube page, and we're they're having everybody me have everybody do lines for it.

>> Because it's too hot for hockey today.

>> Because it's too hot for hockey today.
>> Because it's too hot for hockey today.
>> Like what this was was I'm doing a piece about the Cleveland accent.
Um >> I should have known better.
>> You hid your Cleveland accent pretty well.
>> [laughter] >> Any words in particular stick out for you with a Cleveland accent?
>> Fire.
>> You don't feel like sensitive or or insecure about having a regional dialect?
>> No, when you're bald, Mike, you're not sensitive about many things.
>> You do hear about your Cleveland accent sometimes.
>> I do. When I go to conferences, people make fun of me when I say, "Should we get a cab?"
>> Our accent might not sound particularly elegant or refined.
>> My dad caught the cat eating my mom's lasagna.
>> But it definitely sounds like home. This is Mike Polk for 3 News. Back to you guys.
