In HVAC maintenance, thorough inspection of all components, including small details like contactor coil connections, is essential to prevent callbacks and ensure system reliability; cutting corners during maintenance can lead to overlooked issues that cause system failures later.

We All Hate Having Callbacks...追加:
All right, y'all. To finish off the day today, um >> I'mma show y'all something that I normally don't do. One, >> haven't had one of those be put on my schedule in a while. And two, you try your best as a technician and not have them. But I've got a call back.
Me and Andre did a preventative maintenance downtown at this I don't even necessarily want to say Skyrise, but it's a tall building. I've been there before. Um, >> you guys will probably remember the environment if you've been on the channel for a while, but >> it's a like literally like a year year old or two-year-old system. I remember diagnosing it. Um, we put it was a old five ton Goodman there. It's a 5-tonon Tempar split now. E pump. Um, everything was literally fine when we did the preventive maintenance.
Capacitor was good. Um, >> nothing up with the defrost control board. I didn't see anything obvious like no obvious rubouts or anything on the on the pressure switch wires.
Um, so I have no idea what we're running into, but it worked all fine last week and I guess Monday we got the work order coming in that uh the uh the system's not working anymore.
So, I'm about to drive down there. I got to get gas cuz I'm about on a quarter of a tank. And then we're going to go figure out if this is a real call back.
Um or if something actually broke. So, let's go.
I just got gas and it dawned on me.
I'm I'm I'm going to make two two two guesses, right? Either one, Andre put too many um drain tablets in the train line and they got all hard and calcified and then it just created a blockage. Right.
That's my first one. And I've only I I'm only thinking that cuz I've done it. I threw it in like one of the easy trap. I threw like five or six of them in an easy trap thinking I was like doing the right thing and had to come back like three days later. Uh and it was like a hard solid rock. I had to take a drill bit and like a screwdriver and just just crack that stuff up and let it flow down the drain line. Um that's that's that's my first thing.
The second thing is just somehow the drain backed up. That's that's what that's what doesn't make sense. I'm It's literally the the top apartment um on this building.
I got to believe something legitimately has gone wrong because if we I've got screenshots of the system cooling um when if the unit somehow stopped immediately after we left, I'd have to assume that as a homeowner, you know, you're going to call us right out.
Granted, I believe the daughter who owns it, the lady that owns the apartment built that owns that apartment, um I don't think she's in town right now, but she has a Sensei thermostat that she gets alerts from. Um you know, she controls it via Wi-Fi. She can control it from there. Um it's actually the same Censey I have.
So, I know even if the humidity gets too high in the home, the Sensei thermostat is going to alert you that something is wrong. Um, I'm very very confused. I I really want to know what might be wrong here. I mean, obviously, I'm going figure it out, but I'm like I'm trying to figure out why something just stopped over the weekend, whatever the case may be. Um, but I had Andre working on the air handler. I worked on the condenser. Um, just because I, you know, even though we're trying to get him trained and ready, he's been up on that roof with me before, but I didn't want the service the preventive maintenance to take forever with having to lug stuff up on the roof or, you know, show him how to get up there or not show him how to get up there, but just just waste time doing all that. It's the middle of it's the beginning of summer. We're balls to the wall right now. So, I was like, "You attack the air handler, I'll attack the condenser." And that was that.
>> But, um, I think I'm about 4 minutes away. So, let me try to find somewhere to park cuz they're doing a bunch of construction down here.
These are one of the the nicest apartments downtown that I've had to work at. Um, the only other building I could say comes close is that big pink one over there by the by the keep the doors like the the door coming down the hallway where you're supposed to get your key card to get in. You can just open it and walk right in. That'll keep that stuff working.
>> I know they keep the the the restrooms down there completely locked.
>> Yep. So people can't just come in here and use it.
There's been many of times I've been working in the building. I asked them like, "Hey, can I borrow your bathroom key?" Cuz I got to go.
>> I uh I tried to go in there one day cuz I didn't think I was going to make it upstairs.
>> Yep.
>> When you get my age, you know, you have to you have to make a run for >> Holy camole. It is very stuffy in here.
>> Yeah. It's been on seven. I turned it down to 77. When I first turned it back on, it was on 80 and it run and when it I waited for it to cut off. When it cut off, I put it on 77 and it started up.
Only 65% humidity, though. That is, man. Let's look at this thing.
There's no way we got a clogged drain line. Please did something up in here when he was here the other day. Maybe just check wires because he borrowed the uh >> the step stool.
>> Yeah. Yeah, I know. He's a little uh and I love him to death. He's a good kid. A little bit vertically challenged. Water here.
>> He did anything where he's supposed to do.
>> There's a little bit of slime in there.
But >> are y'all supposed to service a place on the road?
>> Yep. I saw that one.
>> There's nothing.
Don't tell me if I did something on the roof. Don't tell me that it was working fine when I Man, I'm never going to hear the end of it if this is my mess up. I'm never going to hear the end of it. Let me go on the roof and I'll be right back with you, sir.
>> Welcome to my channel.
>> Oh, man. This is crazy.
America.
H I've worked on a bunch of these. Allan told me one of these is a 454B.
I don't I'm getting a little distracted.
That's 410A. That's 454B, ain't it? No.
410 mail room 454B. Okay. So, that was the only one. He tried to tell me there was two of these up here that were 454B, but I remember both of those. So, our unit is right there at the end.
Oh my man, I swear.
Please let it be some legitimate. Don't make me be looking stupid.
I mean, I'm pretty much just talking to myself, but Austin, don't make yourself look stupid out here.
At least let the disconnect be on.
have a have the contact or the Oh, no.
All right. First thing, let's my right hand.
All right. All right. It's on. I left it on. We got something legit here. Let's figure this out.
Had to wait on one of the maintenance guys to come up here um and unlock it.
Allan was here working on the mail room unit, which is kind of funny that he was already here. He was literally leaving here as I was pulling up. Um, we were talking about his mail room call. But what did this wiggle off?
Nah, man. We got delta t's and everything. Some Hold on. Let me take a picture of that for House Call Pro.
I don't get that. Does this just slide on and slide right off?
Oh, it does.
That there's like no real tension on that at all.
Let me see if I can uh use my needlense and kind of tighten that down. I'll pull up the screenshot for you guys so you guys don't think I'm lying.
Uh, I literally I was on the phone with Andre while this was running, asked him. I said, "Hey, what are your delta T's?" He was like, "I got about 19 18ish." I was like, "Okay, cool. We'll call it there. I'm about to clean up."
And I cleaned up. Cleaned up and left.
Came down there and he was ready to go.
So, we we kind of left. And that was it.
It was cool. And we I I don't This is weird.
Please tell me this has happened to somebody else and I don't look stupid on YouTube.
Oh, come on. Get on there. There we go.
That's a little That's a little tougher.
That's not It's a little bit of wiggle, but it's not wiggling backwards towards me. Um, man, that's weird.
I definitely feel dumb. All right. So, uh, very good learning tip for anybody new to the channel or just new to the industry in general. I've never seen this happen on something from like this was installed early 2025. It's a late model 2024 unit. Um, but that brown wire, as you guys could see earlier, was really easy to just get on the conttor uh coil pins and pull off. Sometimes you got to take needls to these things or if you don't have needlense in your bag at the time and all you got is like a pair of channel locks or something, just lightly pinch the ends down. Don't go too crazy with it cuz then you'll end up having to get like your thermostat screwdriver and pry it up a little bit. But you want to make sure that that's a snug fit. Granted, and I just called my mentor, shout out my man Lenny, um, at Dorsy Schools back in Michigan, but, you know, he said kind of the same thing like that. That's very weird. You don't normally see that kind of thing.
But we also work on machines and the machines are made by man. Man ain't perfect. So, even the even the power wire, the wire giving me my 24 volts to the conttor cuz that's my common. Um, even that's got a little bit more snugness to it. And yes, I have dis I have the disconnect out. Um, I am very very surprised that that was the issue because I mean it was just sitting right here. Thank god it didn't touch high voltage.
But now I'm kind of now I'm kind of paranoid. I might go through here and just like check all my high voltage firing. That one's snug, which I guess, you know, is also another learning experience. Um, I'll have to start double checking that stuff on preventative maintenancees. M I mean checking wire nuts, I do that, but I've never took the time to truly doublech checkck ston fittings. I mean, or whatever these are called. I call them staycon fittings. I don't know.
Yeah. Yeah. Got a little bit of wiggle to it.
Um, that's snug. Contacttor or condenser fan on there. It's pretty snug. I'm going crimp this. No, no, it's just wiggling the whole capacitor. I That's weird.
That one low volt one is the only one that's weird or was was like super loose. Mind you, this is the first time we've been here since we put the unit in. So, I don't know why that was off. I didn't even bother because this was so new. I didn't even bother checking the uh the ohms on the contactctor cuz I was like it's it's like a year old. Um, all I did was just check to double make sure that that was the correct readings that I was getting on the on the top side of the capacitor. So, I just turned it. But, I mean, I I feel stupid. This customer is obviously not paying us a dime today. Um, everything inside. Jeez, if the fan would stop spinning so the camera could focus and it's going to spin backwards. All right, I guess I'm not going to show this part then. All right, y'all.
I hope y'all can see the delta T's cuz where I'm at standing right now, I'm like right above the unit. Um, I got my probes literally right below the return in the return right on top through the supply 20° delta T 19.7.
Let me go ahead hook up the gauges real quick.
Suction line there.
Liquid line there.
So he can get out of this man's hair and he can enjoy the rest of his day.
Put side over here.
Oh man, dropped the cap.
Go ahead. Connect to these on the cap. There you go.
Running a 14° subcool, 17° superheat, slowly decreasing.
The unit calls for on the on the data plate panel 10° of subcooling.
And following the data chart, I said data chart. Pressure chart on here.
At a head pressure of 309, which only reached 308, I should have a suction line temp of 88.
And I've got 84.
That's where it's kind of hovering around at.
Honestly, I'm still not inclined. Let's just see what fuel P says. If I say the target sub cooling is 10°, ah, tells me I'm overcharged. But I'm I'm he hasn't once this is one this is one part where like it I'm still learning. Um I feel like even though now it says 13.6 six. Um, even though the system is probably right below here under two flights of stairs cuz I had to go up and then back up. Um, I got to believe that everything here has been running fine.
I'm not running crazy head pressure. I'm just running slightly lower line temp than what it wants.
Um, so I don't think I'm truly overcharged by that much, if that makes any sense.
Super heats now 18°. I'm dealing with 60% humidity right at the unit. Um, plus the return for that system isn't normal.
And by what I mean with that is is like it's not pulling out from the space directly from the unit where that unit sits in the closet at under the air handler. There's a cutout on the side of the return on the left side of it. Um that's just wide open pulling in that closet air. When the door closes, which it does under like it the door can just get sucked closed by the air handler about 13 feet up in the air. Um, there's like a small return grate. I want to say it's probably like a 20x 25 or 25x 25 opening there.
Um, I I probably have to assume that the air handlers cut out in the return plenum is too small, but I don't I don't think it's going to help too much um doing anything more. The last unit that was here was literally as old as this. And I believe these Goodmans are as are like the last major thing that were installed here. The serial number on this one is gone.
Um, can I get the serial number off any of these real quick?
Serial number 2011.
So, it we replaced it last year. unit lasted 14 years somewhere around there.
Somewhere around there. Um, again, I I don't think we have to do too much here.
I'm gonna leave it. Guy hasn't complained.
The daughter hasn't noticed anything too much wrong, and we're still getting really good connections here. So, I don't think anything's going to wiggle back off.
Somebody's probably going to not believe the fact that that wiggled off. But I'm that's my story and I'm sticking to it because I again didn't even check contact resistance when I was here which seeing as it is I probably should have.
You know cutting corners you miss a lot of things. So that's my lesson for the day. Stop cutting corners Austin.
>> All right. It's feeling better in here.
>> Yep.
You know what she wants it set at?
>> I guess set it on 78 for now. She'll >> she can control it from her phone.
>> Yep.
>> All right.
>> She'll change it.
>> Man, that thing is there cuz that still has all that static, doesn't it?
>> Yeah. Yeah. Just sucks.
>> I wonder why they didn't put a door. You know, that mind boggles me as well.
Um, even even just like right here low to the door would have been fine. Heck, the door the entire door could have been louvered and that would have been just as good. Um, but she's all set, sir. Everything's all good. We're not charging for today. Some key takeaways from that call. Um, one, don't don't skip over the small stuff. Don't skip over the small stuff. Um, if I would have taken the two seconds to actually like check that contactor coil, I would have found that that term that that fitting was was loose and probably would have caught this issue and not costed the company a service call. Um, I guess that's uh that's one thing we're trying to work on as uh at Grand Deair right now is just now that we have a better like a a more of a foundation of a team. um not having to speed through everything. And me and Chad are trying our best to like slow down because it's not just me and him anymore as being like the two reliable people to just breathe through like 8 to 12 calls. Um, now we're kind of chilling a little bit more around the five or six because Chad's taking some, I'm taking some, Allan's taking some, and in a little while, Andre is going to be in his own truck doing all of the property management um, homeowners. Not Wow, that was stupid. All the property management preventative maintenances. Um, still working showing him how to be a little bit more tedious and things with the homeowners. Um, but that's just because we just we just check different things because of the prices that some of these property management companies just want us to, you know, want us to work around. Um, so certain things we do on the homeowner side, we don't do on the property management side for that reason. But um with all that being said, it's it's a growing thing to not have to to speed through everything like which is which is crazy to sit back and think about it because when I first got with Chad um and it was literally just me and him, we didn't have an office person. Um we didn't have Lindsay. Shout out Lindsay uh and Hannah.
When it was just me and Chad, we were literally just one call to the next.
Don't look too deep into problems. Just solve what's there. Um and now we have to we have to slow that down.
But Chad had to teach me to speed up because, you know, coming fresh out of school.
Um, and then working a little bit under my mentor Lenny, I was, you know, I kind of thought and just seeing at the time like some of the earlier YouTubers like Quality HVACR, um, and I think HVAC guy at the time, I think Kurt was I think Kurt was putting out videos back in 20 uh, back out in 2020, I think. So, um, watching those guys just be a little bit more tedious and things, I thought that's how the industry was, you know, all all the way around, not just, you know, homeowner side. I thought that was just the whole the industry as a whole.
Like, it doesn't have to be going a million miles a minute. And then working with Chad, I realized that's not the case at all.
um that dis that difference though is more than likely just due to the u the kind of the the customer customer base that your that your company has. Um so Chad had to teach me to just not focus on everything and just get systems back running. What can we do to get systems back running? Now as a company we're starting to get to the point of like well how can we get systems to run better?
Um, I'm learning. I'm still learning things.
Chad's learning things. Allan's learning things. I mean, it's it's one of the beauty beautiful things about the trade is you can learn something new every day. So, with that being said, if you guys enjoyed this video, enjoyed laughing at my mistake. Enjoy probably telling me Austin, you did that. You You probably just forgot, you know. Hit smash the like button. Glad you got a kick out of this. I'm headed home. I'll see y'all in the next one. Peace.
