Traditional giant pottery is created through a multi-stage process: raw clay is first transported and prepared using 'bovine wedging,' where a bull treads on the clay to remove air pockets and create a uniform, elastic matrix; the clay is then shaped using a coil-building technique where thick clay ropes are stacked and fused together with a wooden paddle; finally, the vessel is fired in a kiln at temperatures exceeding 1,200ยฐC, causing the glaze to melt into a glass-like coating and the ceramic body to vitrify, transforming soft mud into a durable, waterproof container.

A Bull Helps Build This Giant Pot ๐ณAdded:
The story begins beneath the surface.
The artisan digs down deep into the earth to harvest pure raw clay deposits.
Once loaded, the clay blocks are transported by horseback to the workshop, a traditional method used to move massive quantities of dense earth across rugged terrains. But raw clay cannot be molded directly. To activate its structural properties, it must undergo a process called boine wedging.
The artisan blinds a bull with a red cloth to keep it calm and drives the heavy animal over the mud. The immense physical weight of the animal continuously compacts and kneads the mud, forcefully pushing out internal pockets of air and creating a completely uniform elastic clay matrix.
Next, the prepared clay is hoisted onto a heavy stone wheel. Driven by a wooden lever system, the artisan uses her body weight to spin the table, centering the clay block. To form a massive jar, the artisan relies on a rare coil stacking method. Instead of shaping the entire jar from one piece, the clay is rolled into thick, dense ropes.
These coils are stacked layer by layer on top of each other. The artisan uses a heavy wooden paddle and a counter opposing hand inside to forcefully beat the seams together, mechanically fusing the separate coils into one thick solid wall that won't separate under intense structural weight.
Once the structure is completely smoothed and shaped, the decoration is handcarved. The artisan carves a beautiful lotus flower into the surface, a timeless motif representing pure beauty arising out of the mud. The jar is then left to air dry before the white glaze is poured over it. This mineral slurry will later melt in the furnace, creating a protective, non-reactive, and glassy skin over the porous ceramic. The final phase is the most critical, the kiln firing. The jar is loaded into a traditional brick and mud oven and sealed shut with wet clay to insulate the interior. The completed jar is an absolute masterpiece.
