Maurin effectively argues that art is a vital survival mechanism for preserving human plurality against the pressures of social conformity. This perspective elevates creative expression from a mere luxury to an essential act of personal and political resilience.

Road to Ithaca - Day 5
Added:I think art is necessary for survival.
Right? I think when we stop making art, what are we living for?
>> Hey, my name is Florent Maurin and I'm going to Ithaca. Today, we are leaving Switzerland and we are going to try to answer a complicated question.
Are there any cool indie game studios in southern Germany?
>> [music] >> An absolutely stellar weather day.
>> [music] [music] >> I'm Martin. I make video games.
Surprise, surprise. It's the best job in the world, I keep telling people. I'm working on Crown Breakers, which is I keep describing describing it as a tactical card brawler that lets you beat up capitalist tyrants. I think people always need something positive and something fun and something exciting. I think making games is also making art, right? Or can be, right? That's that's a sort of spectrum between art and commercial product. And games are somewhere on there, right? Some games are more product, some games are more art. I'm trying to make something that can, you know, live somewhere in the middle. I'll let you find the specific point where you think it fits. Um but I think art is necessary for survival. Right? I think when we stop making art, what are we living for? Art is deeply personal and deeply human when it's best, right? It's it's a person communicating what moves them and what they think is important and what they think about and what they what they worry about, right? And communicating things that are hard to communicate or impossible to communicate and like giving that to people and then people taking that and making something else out of it, right? Cuz they never have the same same thoughts as the artist.
Um but it's a way of humans to connect. And I think that's that's necessary.
Art has been like a staple of human activities since, you know, since caveman days and I think it's I don't know why, but I think it's essential. I'm not sure if that answers the question. We just ask some more questions. I mean, maybe he has a different sort of way to look at it.
I think art is an exploration of plurality, right? The the how what people can be everything. And I think if you look at like fascist uh regimes, they often take great pains to make art conform to a smaller ideal, right? To a smaller vision of the world. And it if it shows what humans can be and what society can be and what life can be, right? I think that's a more positive look. And I think that's that's where the the the benefit of art lies, right?
>> We want to make and talk to the games.
>> Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And talk to the speaker, yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah, [ __ ] [ __ ] that term. [ __ ] that [ __ ] right?
