As the air rises, it cools and forms massive storm clouds called cumulonimbus clouds. Inside these clouds, water droplets, ice crystals, and hail crash into each other, creating electrical charges. The top of the cloud becomes positively charged, while the bottom becomes negatively charged. When the charge difference becomes too strong, boom, lightning strikes.
