Most Americans don't retire at 65 because they choose to stop working, but rather because they are forced to due to unexpected illness, disability, employer downsizing, caregiving responsibilities, or skills becoming outdated; this reality underscores the importance of starting financial planning early in life to build wealth and create options for a secure future.

Good news, if you hate working, most Americans don't actually wait until they're 65 to retire. The bad news is they aren't retiring because they have the money to. According to this article, it is because they are forced to stop working and about 1/3 of them said it was because they had an unexpected illness or disability. Other common reasons were employers were downsizing or reorganizing, which we know is just a fancy way to say there's people here that have been working here too long and have too much vacation time so we need to get rid of them because now we can hire someone younger to do their job and pay them less. Another reason was leaving and care for your spouse or family member because they were also getting older or your skills just not matching the job anymore. And I know people are like kind of joking when they say their retirement plan is to just die at work. But I think it's important for us to understand that even if you want to work when you're old, you might not be able to. And this is why I am always preaching this stuff to you. You need to start thinking about this stuff when you're young. The earlier you start, the easier it is. Do the hard things now for an easy life later.
