Owner operators can achieve profitability in local trucking by efficiently sequencing multiple loads within a single day, minimizing deadhead miles while maximizing loaded miles. In this example, running three local loads totaling 582 miles in 32 hours generated approximately $3,400 in revenue, with fuel expenses around $550, demonstrating that strategic load planning and route optimization are key factors in owner operator success.

This Is How Much I Made Running 3 Local Loads in 32 Hours | Owner Operator In A Peterbilt 379Added:
Thank you.

YouTube.
Welcome back to the channel, y'all.
Today's video is going to be a little different. So, I'm going to show you guys how I'm able to make money by running local. So, stick around and at the end I'm going show you guys how much money I made in the past 24 hours.
So, this is actually my second load. Our first load I picked up this morning out of South Carolina.
That was a 2:00 pickup. 2:00 in the morning, fresh chicken. That load was delivered to Taylorville, North Carolina.
Believe I got there right around 12:30 and I got out around 3:30. And this pickup right here was for 6:00 p.m.
So, I'm actually on my way up to Witacket, North Carolina right now. And I'mma pick up another load. We going to load it in the wagon. So that load is coming off at midnight tonight in Salsbury.
This load that's on the trailer right now is coming off at 6:00 in the morning in McLeanville. So McLeanville and Witset is about 5 minutes apart, 5 miles apart. It's the next town over.
So once I get loaded with the load from Witset, I'm going have to double back about an hour south. And that load is coming off at Hardies at midnight. So once I drop it off, I got to travel an hour north back to McLeanville. So stick around. I'm going to show you guys how I make this work. And also at the end, I'm going to show you guys how much money I make running these loads.
Got a piece of string hanging out my window.
I don't trust nobody.
I don't know. Somebody put that there.
Get it out of here.
Devil be working, man.
So, I was actually supposed to pick up this load at 9:00, but I'm probably not going to get there till about 10.
Normally, they're pretty quick. We get me out of there. 20 minutes, 30 minutes max.
And once I get loaded, like I said, it's just an hour south.
I know better.
That's the worst lanes to be in right there. The right lane, especially during rush hour.
So, I'm a little behind schedule right now because my first load that I picked up this morning, I checked in a little after 2:30 in the morning and I didn't get out till 8:30. So, kind of set me back. You know, it's fresh chicken, so sometimes it takes a little longer to get loaded with fresh chicken.
But luckily there was no blood in the back of my trailer because most times when you run fresh chicken, got to get a trailer wash out.
I believe it was chicken breast, you know, so it was already packaged.
So, my first load was fresh chicken.
This is some packaged meals, which is 34°.
And the load I'm picking up right now is produce, which is also going to be 34°.
And it should be just a couple pallets.
That's all I got on my trailer right now is a couple pallets. About three pallets.
Heat.
Heat.
So, I got to stop and get some fuel. My reaper is low.
I'm also low on the tractor.
Come on, folks. Let's go.
Got to get over one more.
Heat.

So, the fuel price is going down just a little.
Right now, it's 509. Last week it was 519.
So, we'll take it.
I'm probably going to pay outside at the pump. I'm in a rush right now.
So, I'll probably just pay outside and go inside for my receipt.
Heat.
Heat.
So, with my sheets card, I should save a couple cents. I believe I should save about 3 cents per gallon.
So, instead of 509, should be 506.
Yeah.
Not fun, y'all.
What else? Do I need my gloves?
I believe the pump stops at $400, so that should be enough to get me going.
Heat.
Heat.
Yeah.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
So, that was $320.
And I'm going to put 70 in my reefer.
So, I got to cut the reefer off.
So I'm a little above half attack right now and my reefer is going to be about 3/4.
And like I said, this pump stops at $400. So I'm not trying to swipe twice right now. If I swipe again, I got to go inside.
Heat.
Heat.
So in total that was 79 gallons.
First, let me log this fuel on my FA.
Heat up here.
I'm surprised there's nobody parked on this on-ramp right here.
Still a little early, I guess.
So This worked out perfect.
I'm actually late right now. I was supposed to be here at 9:00.
It's almost 10:30 right now. But, uh, he just met me outside. So, open up your doors and I'll back up on door 20.
He was outside smoking a cigarette.
He said, "You going to all these?" I said, "Yeah." Like, "Yeah, I'm waiting on you." And uh, by the way, if y'all been keeping up, I got it fixed, y'all.
So, for a couple weeks, I was using a bungee.
Cut these lights off when I'm backing up.
He's ready.
He is ready, y'all.
So, I don't have a lot of room to my right. So, swing it.
lot later than I normally would.
I was going to set up my drone, but I ain't got time right now.
Heat up here.
So, we got I pull forward to my right just a little.
So, the problem there is I couldn't see the door.
That truck was blocking me.
So, I was just guessing Still got to pull to my right just a little.
There we go.
That's more like it.
That's what I want to see back there.
Heat up here.
And it's nice and cool outside right now.
It's probably about 60° right now.
You know, shout out to Hey Dude, man, they've been hooking me up, man. Believe this is the third pair right here.
So dirty right now. It rained a couple days ago.
And also this morning, I picked up that fresh chicken. Man, that place is a mess.
That place is muddy.
Let's see if he started loading me up.
That plane is down. So, should start loading me any minute now.
I got to change my That's why I keep slamming my I got it. I can't find the So, I got to order this.
I used to keep it right here, but I got my interior done.
Famous place. I can't find it. So, got to get me a new bit so I can remove the cycle thing.
I believe it's right here.
If not, it's going to be right here.
This is all a bunch of stuff that I need. fuse.
If you guys are running a truck, man, you ain't got this, you ain't trucking.
Got to have some fuse in the truck, man.
Extra fuse. Matter of fact, I used one yesterday.
These are my lights. These lights right here.
O-rings.
Then I got a bunch of stuff.
actually got to change out the lock on these doors. So, right now, currently, this key right here, this is one of the newer keys. So, this key opens this door. That's it. This one is a old key. So, this opens that one, a side door. And also glove box. What else? And also the little tool box on the other side. But um I've got the locks right here. So I'm going to change them out. I should have enough. I think I bought about five or six.
>> All right. That other stuff's not back here, right?
>> No, no, no.
So, I got a bunch of stuff in here, man.
This is all stuff that I need at some point, but I rather have it.
Extra relay.
Some more relays.
some more fuse.
I got a bunch of stuff, man. So, that's what I keep in my glove box.
Really and truly, there is no way to make this a lot neater.
It is what it is.
So, I'm going to change my striker pin.
Over the weekend, I'm going to go to Harbor Freight. I'm going to get this B.
It's pretty cheap. Less than 10 bucks.
This is my thermometer when I did my AC job.
AC blowing really cold, by the way.
It's so cold. I got to turn it down. If I turn it up past level two, it's way too cold, man.
That trailer is rocking.
Should be out of here shortly.
Should be about 3 or 4 pilots. That's it.
Somebody else pulling up right now.
So, I'mma plug in this address so y'all can see how close it is.
Should be about an hour.
>> 54 minutes. 59 miles. That's it.
I'm getting some good money on it.
Less than 60 miles.
So, right now my ET is 11:31. So, should be right on time, y'all.
So, that was super quick, y'all. Took about 20 minutes.
I just closed the back of my trailer, got my paperwork, and uh right now my ETA is 11:56.
So, right on time.
So, I was late to the pickup, but I'll be good for the delivery.
So, I just woke up from a much needed nap.
So, I checked in right at midnight and I got on the door right away.
So, I got a green light. I just paid my lumper, but I'm about to get off the door cuz my paperwork is go all the way down there. So, I ain't walking.
I got a green light. So, I'm going just drive down, get my paperwork, and get out of here. So, I got about 3 almost 3 and 1/2 hours in.
It's almost 4:45 right now. It's 4:37 in the morning and uh my next drop is for 6:00 or 6:30.
It's an hour away, so we're good. So, this all worked out perfectly.
I almost pressed the wrong button.
That's my horn right there.
That's my start button.
So, I'm going just pull off the dot, check the back of my trailer.
Heat. Heat.
This flashlight is awesome, man.
So, we're looking good.
Three pallets.
That's what's supposed to be on there.
I'mma check and see if she got my paperwork.
She just called me about 5 minutes ago.
She said if I don't get my paperwork, I got to come back tomorrow.
>> You got the hell you been at?
>> 81.
>> You've been in the cut, >> man. I was knocked out, >> man. You've been in the cut all night.
>> No, I just paid my lump. Go get your paperwork. Get it ready.
>> All right, cool. Thank you.
>> Hold on. You empty?
>> Yeah.
>> Uh, >> well, no. I still got stuff on my trailer, though.
>> You do?
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. You got a pin in there? I know. I should have a damn pen, but I don't.
>> I do. I got another stop right now.
>> Yeah, I know. But usually you'll get the paperwork and stop at the guard shack.
>> Yeah. Okay. Don't stop.
>> Don't stop at the guard shack. Go straight through and through.
>> All right. In front of you, just keep going.
>> All right. Appreciate it. I wasn't trying to put her on camera.
Not everybody likes to be on camera.
Looks like it's about to start raining.
So, so I'm going to run it right here and grab my paperwork.
So, I might stop to get me some hot water so I can make me some tea.
Y'all know I love me some tea.
So, security already checked me out. She told me to keep it pushing once I get to the guard shed.
That's a recipe for disaster right there. All black in the dark with a safety vest on or something, bro.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat up here.
And they got real strict about folks parking right here too.
Give you a big ticket.
Heat. Heat.
All right, y'all. So, I made it to my third and final loading. And notice I said load, not delivery.
These are all separate loads. These are three different loes.
I'm about to get checked in. Offices right there.
I'm pretty sure they're going to put me on one of these doors right here. So, I should have parked on the other side.
All right, let's go get checked up.
So this is three loads almost 24 hours.
Could have backed up some more too.
So that's my door right there between those two trucks.
Heat. Heat.
Hey, go ahead, bro.
Heat. Heat.
So, I'm going to see if I can take you another nap right now.
I was going to go straight, but this dude right here is in my way.
Got to adjust my clutch, too.
This is where I cut the lights off when I'm backing up.
Heat up here.
right here. Set up a little better.
Somebody behind me right now back in there.
Let's go.
Heat up here.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat up here.
Heat. Heat.
All right, y'all.
Load number three is in the books.
But um let's go check out the back of this trailer.
And I finished probably around 7:00 this morning. Y'all see what time it is. It's a little after 1:00 right now.
But you know, your boy was tired, so I had to get me some sleep.
Let me go slide my tandem real quick.
Check out the back of my trailer.
And this actually works out perfect.
So by the time I get back to Charlotte, forgot to apply the brakes back there. But um by the time I get back to Charlotte, it's going to be time to pick up my load that goes to South Carolina tomorrow.
That's more like it.
Back of the trailer looks good.
I closed my door, but I can't close it right here. It's too close.
So, I'mma put it in pinhole number seven. Y'all ready? Watch this.
Pin hole number seven.
5 6 7 Should be right there.
Pinhole number seven. Let's go check it out.
It's looking good.
It's looking good.
Let's see.
Let's count them out. 1 2 3 4 5 6. Bam.
I've been doing this for a while, y'all.
That's experience right there. Let's count them again.
Can't count this one right here. Right.
So, we start right here.
Start right here. One, two, three, four, five, six.
Number seven, y'all. Let's get up out of here.
That's experience right there, man.
I'm still going to close my doors.
They want you to leave the doors open.
But, uh, I'm going to show you guys in a minute why I don't leave my doors open.
You know, when I get to the guard shack, I still got to get out and go close my doors anyways. So, why leave them open?
So, I had to replace this door holdback last week.
I hit a rough spot while I was getting out of here. Well, not this location, but I was at Food Lion down in South Carolina. Hit a rough spot and I lost it. So, yeah. I don't leave my doors open, man. I keep them closed.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat up here.
What's good, bro? What's up, bro?
>> How you doing, man?
>> All right. You, too.
Heat. Heat.
See if I go grab me something to eat real quick. Little truck stop right there.
Grab a muff.
I guess I can wait.
Let's see what's the price of diesel right Yeah, I believe it was 508 or something like that.
I'm going to park on the outside. It's going to be a lot easier to get out.
This car is blocking me. So, that's a dub.
So, let me back up and go with my original plan.
This guy's taking up two pumps right here.
All right, YouTube.
Let's talk some numbers.
How much money could I make from running these local loads?
So, I started at midnight. Well, 12:00 in the morning really on Friday.
Today's Saturday, so I started at 12:00 in the morning on Friday.
And um I've got some numbers in front of me right here, my calculator.
So from where I parked my truck to my first pickup, that was 110 miles from my dad head.
So from S to South Carolina, Taylorville, North Carolina, that was 170 mi.
Once I dropped off in Taylorville, my dad head back to Charlotte. That was 73 mi. Pick up load number two.
So once I got loaded with load number two, that was 113 mi from Charlotte to Witset.
Once I picked up in Witset, that was 60 mi from Witset, North Carolina to Salsbury, North Carolina. So that was load number three.
Load number three came off at midnight at Aldi. So once I dropped it off, I had 56 miles from Salsbury back to McLeanville.
So in total, 582 miles.
How much money did I make?
So load number one, that was $1,200.
And I'm also going to get some detention. So, it's probably going to be about 14, maybe 1450.
So, that was load number one.
Load number two, that was $1,000 from Charlotte to Woodset.
So, loaded miles, that would have been 113 loaded miles.
Load number three was also $1,000.
That was only 60 loaded miles.
So all three loads without my detention, I'm at $3,200.
With my detention, it's probably going to be about $3,400.
So 582 mi roughly $3,400.
Now, it took me about roughly, let's see, I started at 12 in the morning. I was done. My paperwork was ready at 8:00 in the morning following day. So, let's see, 12 to 12 midnight, that's 24 hours. And then from midnight to 8:00 in the morning, it's another 8 hours. So, 24 + 8, 32 hours in total, it took me. So, that's how I'm able to make it work by running local. Works for me, might not work for everybody else, but you know, in my expense, uh, when I first started, I had a half a tank of fuel. I got some fuel yesterday.
Uh $400 worth of fuel. And I also got some fuel today. And I bought another 150 um when I left the shipper earlier just to put it back on half a tank so I can know exactly how much fuel I used cuz I started on a half a tank. So that 150 that I added, I was a little above half with that 150. So now that I got back to Charlotte, I'm back to half a tank. So 550, that's my expense right there in fuel.
So the rest is all profit. I'm in the South, so we ain't got to deal with tolls. And by the way, I'm at my pickup right now for my next pickup. Uh this is coming off tomorrow.
I'm probably not going to vlog tomorrow.
And uh let's see.
It's actually looking good back there. I should be able to drive in today. I ain't got to back in. So, I'm going just drive in. Ain't nobody back there right now.
You know, normally I back in if it's packed back there.
So, yes, you know, you can make money running local, but you know, you're going to have to uh find the right loads.
And as y'all saw yesterday, you know, I added two loads together at the same time. you know, both of them, they were the same temperature, 34 degrees. Um, and each load was three pallets each.
So, that's how I'm able to make it work, man. Uh, without my dead head, you know, it's probably closer to $8 a mile, but, you know, we're going to factor in my dead head.
All right, YouTube. I appreciate y'all for watching. Appreciate y'all for tuning in. I'm about to go back up right now and uh about to give my guy a phone call. Let him know I'm outside and I'm going get loaded and uh I'll see y'all on the next one. Until the next one.
Peace out, y'all.
Matter of fact, I'mma put on the other side.
I'm not sure which door he's going to tell me to back up on.
So, y'all see me blindsided in this driveway.
That's because it's packed back there.
You know, if there's a lot of trucks back there, I can't turn around. Or, you know, sometimes if the cars are in the parking lot right here, the employees, I can't turn around.
And I don't mind blindsiding, man.
It don't bother me.
I think I just ran out of storage on my camera outside.
So, y'all going to have to look at my face. Look at my ugly face.
But my kids about to get out of school, man. My kids get out of school about 2 weeks, 2 and 1/2 weeks. I'm going be otr.
We going to make some good content this summer, man.
Back to the Northeast. We go.
New York City, Jersey, Midwest. Let's go, man. I'm looking forward.
I got a meeting coming up uh next Saturday. Stay tuned.
Stay tuned, y'all.
I'm excited.
Deuces.
