Pokémon Learning League - Main Idea (Full Lesson)Añadido:
Piplup, Nurse Joy just gave me information about the local newspaper's writing challenge for up-and-coming coordinators. Piplup!
All I have to do is write about our friendship. The winner gets tickets to a special contest workshop. Piplup!
Should be easy, right? THERE'S A LOT TO say about our friendship. And they've given me an example in the materials.
Hmm, a trainer is talking about his Chimchar. And there's a lot of information here. Piplup!
I'm not sure what the entry's getting at. Maybe Lex knows how to tackle this.
Hey Dawn, what are you up to today? Hi Lex. I want to write something about my friendship with Piplup for a writing challenge. There's a sample entry in the materials, but I'm not sure what it's getting at. Well, let's start by looking at the first few sentences. Sure. Here goes.
Meeting my Chimchar was the best experience of my life. On the morning of my 10th birthday, I went to Professor Rowan's lab to pick out my first Pokémon. Chimchar sat between Piplup and Turtwig, and they were all so different.
Sounds like the start of a great entry.
True, but what is he getting at? I mean, what's the big picture?
You've got the right idea looking for the main idea. That's what a piece of writing is all about. It's the focus, or the big picture. How can I find the main idea? It helps to think of it as a big picture. If you can visualize what's being described, you'll get closer to what it's all about.
What do you see as you read? I see the trainer standing in front of Chimchar.
Chimchar's looking at the trainer. The trainer's looking at Chimchar, and uh is that the main idea? You're on your way. Now, let's look at the small pieces of information that tell more about the main idea.
Or support it by adding to its message.
Details, they can be actions, sounds, sights, whatever adds to the big picture. Like, Chimchar stood out because it was really funny. It teased Turtwig and made goofy faces at me. I can see that happening. Those details make it sound like meeting Chimchar was fun. Exactly. Now, let's look at the facts.
Facts are pieces of information that can be proven true or verified.
They support the main idea by adding more information.
How can I find them? Questions. After you've read the paragraph, ask who is talked about, when does it take place, where does it happen, and why does this happen? These questions will bring you closer to the main idea. The who is the trainer and Chimchar. The where is Professor Rowan's lab. The when is the morning of the trainer's birthday. And the why, that's easy. It would be his starter Pokémon.
Those are all important facts because they support the main idea, the trainer's experience meeting Chimchar.
When you write your own entry, make sure your supporting details and facts apply to your main idea. That means that they're relevant.
So, you wouldn't have details about Turtwig because the paragraph's about the trainer and Chimchar. You got it.
Anything else I should look for? Look for statements that aren't given to you directly. These implied messages are clues that help you find the real meaning behind the writing.
Inspect the details. See if they lead to other thoughts about the main idea. This sentence stuck out cuz it's so mysterious. Chimchar and I looked at each other, and I couldn't help but wonder what we could accomplish together in battles and contests. What do you think those details might lead to? The trainer's already thinking about his future with Chimchar. That says something about the main idea. This was a very special meeting. You're on to something, Dawn.
The main idea is that the trainer's first time meeting Chimchar was one of the greatest experiences he'll ever have. But, how can I check that it's the right main idea?
Look at the order of the sentences.
The main idea should appear at the beginning of the paragraph.
And the sentences after it should be full of supporting details and facts.
The main idea sometimes pops up at the end, too.
Hmm. I can spot the main idea at the beginning. He mentions how important meeting Chimchar was right away. Then, there's lots of supporting details and facts.
And he talks about the meeting at the end, too. Now, we're going to go on a lot of amazing adventures together, but I don't know if any of them will be as exciting as meeting Chimchar for the very first time.
So, the amazing meeting with Chimchar must be the main idea. You did it. Now, I know what the big picture of my entry's going to be all about. Can we practice some more though before I start?
Sure thing. Can you help Dawn? Let's put your eyes to work in finding the main idea and the big picture.
Here are three pictures. Can you click on the sentence that contains the main idea? Let's go.
Right. [bell] All three pictures show that Ash and Pikachu train hard. You got the main idea.
What's a detail you could use to support this main idea?
>> [bell] >> That's it. Pikachu and Ash trying their best is a detail that supports the main idea of Pikachu and Ash improving their skills.
What's a fact you could use to support this main idea.
>> [bell] >> That was great. The pictures show that Ash is helping Pikachu with its Thunderbolt move.
What's the main idea here?
Good job. All three pictures show that Team Rocket is trying to catch Pikachu together. You've got the main idea.
What's a detail you could use to support this main idea?
>> [bell] >> Great. That small piece of information supports the main idea that Team Rocket is trying to catch Pikachu.
What's a fact you could use to support the main idea?
Right. A fact is a piece of information that can be proven true. And we all know that Team Rocket wants to catch Pikachu.
Using the pictures, what question could you ask to get closer to the main idea?
That was awesome. You can't really tell where this takes place, but there's no question that Team Rocket's involved.
What's the main idea here?
>> [bell] >> All right. The pictures definitely show us three people who spend their time helping Pokémon. That's the main idea.
What's a detail you see in the pictures that you could use to support this main idea?
>> [bell] >> Great work. That's definitely a small piece of information you can see in those pictures.
What are some facts you could use to support this main idea?
>> [bell] >> Right. It can be proven true that Nurse Joy, Professor Oak, and Officer Jenny do all of that work.
Which sentence is an implied message?
Remember, the implied message is like a hint that supports the main idea.
>> [bell] >> Good work. That's an implied message because it's more about the meaning of the main idea than the facts or details.
Wow, now I'm really ready to enter this challenge. Thanks, Lex. Just keep that main idea in mind and you'll do great.
See you, Dawn.
Now, let's put my entry to the test before I send it off. Here's a picture.
You might not be able to tell what it is now, but for every step that you complete, we'll focus in on the main idea.
Piplup and I have an awesome future as a team. When I turned 10 years old, I was excited about becoming a trainer, but I didn't know just how great it would be to have Piplup at my side. I just left Twinleaf Town and went on my way to achieve all the goals I dreamed about for so long. I never knew that I'd find such a great partner at Professor Rowan's lab in Sandgem Town. Sometimes, Piplup is fussy. It refuses food and can be stubborn, but we always work together as partners when it really counts. We've already had so many adventures in our travels and we're both learning from each other along the way. I'm the trainer and Piplup is my Pokémon, but what's most important is that we're a team.
Let's do it. Click on the sentence that best states the main idea of my entry.
>> [bell] >> All right.
Can you click on a detail that describes Piplup's personality?
Good job.
All right. Can you click on a fact that tells when I met Piplup?
>> [bell] >> Good job.
Way to go. Can you click on a fact that tells where I met Piplup?
>> [bell] >> Awesome.
That was amazing. Can you put a star next to the sentence that contains an implied message?
>> [bell] >> Good job.
Great. Can you highlight the part of the entry that has the supporting facts and details in yellow?
Nice work.
Nice work.
Can you highlight the part of the entry that closes by restating the main idea?
Yay!
That was awesome. You really helped me focus on the main idea.
I think we've got a real shot at going to that workshop for upcoming coordinators, Piplup.
We're a great team, Piplup. That'll always be my main idea.
Try again. Look to see what all three pictures have in common. You can do it.
Try again. Look to see what all three pictures have in common. You can do it.
Try again. Which sentence uses a small piece of information that you can see in all three pictures?
Try again.
Just because something's a fact doesn't mean that it's relevant to the main idea.
Think about the main idea while you look at the pictures.
Try again.
What kind of action is taking place in the pictures?
Could that action be the main idea?
>> Try again.
What's a small piece of information that supports the main idea that Team Rocket is trying to catch Pikachu?
Try again. While you might be able to prove that Team Rocket argues a lot, it isn't relevant to the main idea. Look again. You can do it.
Try again.
Think about the main idea. Are people a big part of it?
Try again.
Do the pictures show a connection between the people and the Pokémon that tells us about the main idea?
Try again. Think visually.
What's a small piece of information you see in these pictures?
Try again.
What is it about the jobs of Nurse Joy, Officer Jenny, and Professor Oak that's true and relevant to the main idea?
Try again. The implied message is more about the meaning of the main idea than the facts or details. It's a clue.
Try again.
Try again.
