That pause is where change begins but it is also where discomfort is most strongly felt. Avoidant patterns are often reinforced by avoidance itself. When discomfort arises in closeness, stepping back reduces that discomfort quickly. The nervous system learns that distance equals relief. Over time, this reinforces the belief.
