During butterfly metamorphosis, nearly all cells in the chrysalis dissolve into a cellular soup, but tiny clusters of cells called imaginal discs survive and grow from 50 to 50,000 cells to build the butterfly's body parts. Remarkably, some nerve cells also survive this process, and a 2008 Georgetown University study published in PLOS ONE demonstrated that adult moths retained fear memories trained in caterpillar form, showing that simple conditioned responses can cross over through complete cellular dissolution.

A Caterpillar Turns to Liquid Before It Becomes a ButterflyHinzugefügt:
Most cells inside [music] the chrysalis dissolve, but not the blueprints. It digests itself.
Nearly every cell [music] breaks down into soup.
Most people picture wings growing slowly.
No cells move yet.
Turns out it's a total [music] breakdown, cell by cell.
But tiny cell clusters [music] survive.
They're the blueprints.
Each cluster starts with 50 cells. It grows [music] to 50,000.
Those clusters consume the liquid to build wings, legs, eyes.
But here's the strangest part. Some nerve cells [music] survive, too.
In 2008, scientists trained caterpillars [music] to fear a smell.
Electric shocks paired with a scent. The nerve cells logged it. The moths emerged.
Their nerve cells still remembered that smell.
Not all memories transfer. Only the nerve cell fear does. [music] It dissolved. Each cell rebuilt. The chrysalis liquid carried that memory.
