Master Native English Similes with “AS…AS” Expressions | Speak Fluent & Advanced English追加:
Assalamu Alaikum everyone. Welcome to Vocab Gram. You Learn English with Easy Lessons.
In today's lesson we will study some spoken English phrases. These are idiomatic expressions that are used very frequently in your spoken English.
Such as as good as any, as sharp as attack, as good as dead, as plain as day, as fit as a fiddle, as rare as hen's teeth. There are more besides this. These are used in our spoken English.
You might be seeing one thing in these.
You might be seeing a rhythm in these.
Ok? These are all idiomatic expressions and in today's lesson we will learn what they mean. Ok? Let's get started. Like the first one is as good as any when do we use it? When we have to say that something is exactly like the rest of the things.
Meaning it is as good as the rest. If you are describing the quality of something and you are saying that it has the same quality as the others.
Ok? When you are comparing and want to say that this is as good as the rest.
There we use As Good As Any.
Like see the sentence. This restaurant is as good as any in the city.
Meaning there is nothing special in it.
This restaurant is also equally good. It is the same as other restaurants within the city. Meaning there is nothing new or different in it. It is as good as the rest. Ok? In this way, look at this phone, it is as good as any expensive brand. Ok?
Sometimes, because of expensive brands, we get a little bit confused and think, what's the big deal?
But whatever else happens, that is, whatever thing happens, it is equally good. So at that time you can say that this can be said about any cloth. Regarding any phone, whatever is good about an expensive brand, whatever is good in it, this one is equally good. Ok? So use 'as good as any' when you are comparing things and saying that this one is as good as the others. Good sir. Next from us is G as good as gold.
Ok? What does this mean? This will be used by the people. Mostly used for children. Ok? But you can use it for any person.
Where you want to say that this person has been very good. He has been very well behaved. This is very obedient. He is very honest. It is trustworthy.
While praising someone, it is mostly used for children that this child is very decent. Ok? He has not bothered me. Ok?
He has been very obedient. He has been well behaved.
It did not behave badly in any way.
But even for adults, there are some situations where you can tell someone. Ok? Like what will be its sentence? The children were as good as good during the trip. Now the teacher can say during the trip that if the children have behaved very well and have been obedient.
He did exactly what the teacher said.
Ok? So he has listened to the teacher. Then the teacher can say that the children have been very good on the trip.
He hasn't bothered me at all. This is its purpose as good as gold.
Similarly, He Promised to Behave and He Was as Good as Gold. Meaning he had promised, promise to behave means that he will behave well. Ok? To behave means that a child says that he means he will behave well.
We tell you to behave politely. Ok? So what it is is that he promised to behave, which means he promised that he will behave decently and then he means that he has been very good. He has been very well behaved. Has been obedient.
He has no meaning of being honest and trustworthy, you can use it for any big person.
Ok sir. Next is G as Good as Dead.
We use 'as good as that' when we want to say that something no longer has any hope of survival or that it no longer has any hope of success.
You can understand it like this, if you have a gadget and it gets damaged.
You repair it again and again. Then put it to use. Then it gets spoiled after some time.
Then you repair it. Use it.
So there comes a point when it is no longer capable of further repair.
This means that there is no longer any hope left that it can be of any use to you. So then it becomes like this, as good as dead. Meaning it becomes like a dead thing.
Understand its meaning in this way that when in any situation you do not see any hope in the future of anything.
This phrase is used there. As good as day. Like its sentence would be if the company loses this deal it is as good as dead. It means that sometimes there is a company which is completely on its downfall and its last hope is some deal. So he's saying if this deal does n't happen, the company is dead. After this comes Company B. After this the company cannot run.
Meaning she will become so much like she is now. Absolute devastation. Ok? Kind of like The Old Car Is As Good As Dead Now. It is an old car. There comes a point after which there is no hope left in him that he will be able to walk. Ok? So what is that now? She's like she's just dead now.
ok sir. Next we have is the G Edge Sharp S At Hack. Edge sharp as a hack we say it will be used for a human.
And for the one you say whose mind is very sharp. For someone who is very intelligent, mentally alert and has a sharp mind, this phrase will be useful as sharp as a tack. Like she solves the puzzle quickly because she is as sharp as a tack. Meaning, whatever puzzle it was, he solved it very quickly because his mind is very sharp. Similarly, even at the age of 80, my grandfather is as sharp as a tack. I mean, even at the age of 80, my grandfather is so intelligent. His mind still works very fast. Ok? Take it this way. Good sir.
Next we have that is GS plane s day. When is it used? Then when you have to say that something is so obvious and clear that everything happens in a day.
Meaning, in some situation you might feel that something is there, it is in front of you. Just like you can see everything clearly in daylight, in the same way, in this situation, whatever is the reality, whatever is the truth, whatever is there, is clearly visible to you.
Whatever is there in it is not meaningful.
Ok? There is no such thing. Well, like, The Mistake in the Report was as plain as day. Ok? That the mistake that has occurred in the report is very serious. It is not that there was such a mistake that you cannot identify it once you read the report. It's not like that.
And whatever mistake there is, that was inside it.
That is obvious. That is clear. You can note that down. Similarly, Haz Fair Was As Plain As Day On Haz Face. Meaning, fear and terror was clearly visible on his face. It was obvious. It was clearly visible that he was scared. Ok? Good sir. Next we have is the GS Fit Edge Fiddle. 'S Fit as a Fiddle' means that a person is physically fit or you can understand it as fit. Ok?
If a person is physically very fit, healthy and active then this phrase will be used for him. Like after months of exercise he feels as fit as a fiddle. This means that after one month of exercise, he is now completely fit, healthy and fit.
Ok? Is active. Meaning, if you want to talk about someone's health. Correct?
My grand mother is 80 years old but still as fit as a fiddle. I mean, my grandmother is 80 years old. But even today he is absolutely fit, healthy and active. Ok? Okay [nasal sound] yes. Next we have that G edge rare edge hands teeth. Now understand this from rare.
What does rare mean?
Something that is very rare and is not easily available.
Ok? For that we will say. But what makes up the entire phrase? What constitutes an expression? Edge Rare Edge Hands Teeth. Like the teeth of a hen are rare, right? He is not a newcomer. Ok? So similarly this thing is also unique. Like see the sentence.
Honest politicians are red as hens chief these does. In today's times, an honest politician is very rare because no one has been honest.
Similarly, good job opportunities in that town are as rare as hen's teeth. Meaning, the good job opportunities in this town have now become very rare.
Meaning, good jobs are not available.
Good sir. Next we have G.S.
Busy as a Bee. Understand this from busy, it is used for a person who is very busy, who is always busy in work, if a person is as busy as a bee.
Like my mother is always as busy as a bee in the kitchen before Eid. Before Eid, all the Amiyas become very busy in the kitchen.
In fact, she is very busy even on the day of Eid.
Ok? So then she becomes busy as a bee.
Similarly, it is as busy as a bee managing his new business. If someone starts a new business, then obviously that person will become very busy.
Setting up a new business is a difficult task.
ok sir. So this is today's phrase. Please tell me how you liked it.
How many of these were new to you that you did n't know before? Do let me know in the comments section. And I see you next session.
Allah Hafiz.
