Muslim students in Chinese universities often experience cultural isolation due to being the only visible minority, yet they are met with tolerance and kindness from local Chinese people who are open to different cultures; however, many Chinese people lack understanding of Islamic culture, leading to misunderstandings where Muslim practices like hijab and prayer are misinterpreted, though cities like Chengdu and Beijing provide access to mosques and halal restaurants to support Muslim students' religious and dietary needs.

As a Muslim student in Chinese universityAjouté :
What's the feeling to be a student in Chinese university as a Muslim?
>> Because I wore hijab at the time, but anyone around me didn't wear the hijab, so I feel a bit alone and isolated, not just mentally but culturally. The people here, they are very tolerant, the local Sichuan people, and they are open to every culture. They won't judge you according to your appearance or your hijab. They are all very kind and nice nice to me. Just in front of the our university, there's many halal restaurant outside just like the one we tried.
>> Did anyone say something bad thing when they saw your hijab or something they know you are Muslim?
>> In the university, only me was wearing hijab at that time.
Actually, many people they don't know what it is. I remember this one people pass by me and said, "Oh, is this girl wearing a hat?
>> [laughter] >> Why is she wearing a hat in a hot day?
That's so weird."
Actually, many Chinese people they don't know much about Islamic culture or Muslim because culture here is a Han Chinese culture.
And then even at school, we don't learn much about Islamic culture or any other religious culture.
>> [snorts] >> So, that's why >> Ah.
>> many students they don't they just don't know what it is.
>> So, can you find the masjid when you in the city?
>> Sure, in city center the Huangcheng Mosque. So, the location is very nice and also nearby the masjid, there are many halal restaurants.
>> So, this is in Chengdu, but then later you went to Beijing to study your master.
>> Actually, in Beijing there's a much more masjid in the city area.
>> So, when you pray, what's their reaction?
>> So, because many people they have never encountered such culture before. So, for them it's like first time and they are very curious.
>> Do they think you are playing kung fu?
>> No.
>> Just like my classmate.
Oh, brother, are you playing kung fu?
>> Oh, some people think maybe I was doing yoga.
>> Ah. know because I was praying on a yoga mat.
>> Uh-huh.
