Replacing a road culvert involves excavating the old pipe, installing a new one (typically steel per county code for fire safety), and properly backfilling to ensure structural integrity and proper drainage; the process requires careful alignment, depth considerations, and coordination with property owners to accommodate site-specific needs.

Replacing A Road Culvert At The Beach Well Kinda本站添加:
Good morning everybody and welcome back to the channel. So we're in beautiful Bass Lake, Indiana and we are going to replace this little road culver right here. We've got Micro Richard the 17Z9A Hyundai Mini excavator and we got T870 Bobcat and we got a 12-in culvert we need to replace that runs under the road to the lake. Drains this little stub ditch here along these houses. It's rusted out and it needs replaced. So, we're going to start at the lake and start replacing it.
There's some big roots down there.
There's something.
What is it?
Oh, the lighting is really weird right here.
It's like dark here and bright at the same time from the reflection off the lake and it's bothering my eyes. It's kind of weird. But if I put my glasses on then I can't like see right. It's hard to explain.
Good morning.
Was there a tree here at some points?
>> Yeah. Heat up here.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Shut up.
Heat. Heat.
I need to find the bottom crazy over [ __ ] the guy on the road.
They asked they were like, "Oh, you can't close it. We got a poker run.
It's probably all right.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
That one was definitely jump, that's for sure. It's like a worm up out of the ground right through there. All right, we're going to start digging this out here. We're going to get this uh asphalt out. I don't know how thick it is.
We did cut it.
Get these little better.
We got these little pieces out of the way.
might have to move our cut over a little bit because our pipe steers the wrong direction under the road from what our cut was. We stretched a string to get straight from end to end and uh obviously the ends were not straight with the road.
Well, that's all right.
figure out here.
There we go.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
That's nice.
There we go.
Heat.
Heat.
Yeah.
See, let's see.
Heat.

What they doing today? I have to work every day, right? She goes, see them. I didn't >> probably >> I'll tell you later.
No, just missed it.
He about went for a ride.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.

They must have junk.
>> Well, if that blade wasn't junk before, it is junk now. Good job, George.
Yeah, that blade was junk to start with.
Hey, got the bolt cut in half.
Heat.
Heat.
Well, now that the old pipe's all out, we're just going to go ahead and we're going to push everything back in and start over.
So, because simple fact that was undermined there a little bit and I can't quite straddle some of this because it was a little little wide by the time we got the pipe out. So, I just figured, you know what? We'll shove it all back in. We're going to go a touch deeper. So, we're going to be off of the original bed that the pipe laid on. So, we'll be back in the compacted soil and we'll just back fill it. That way I'll grind up some of that sod as I dig it back out. Also, I was going to use my other bucket, but there's so much debris down here, chunks of asphalt and stuff that it was causing a problem.
Chunks would get on the cutter edge and when I come out of the hole, they get caught on the road and want to peel it up.
I just decided to use the small bucket with the teeth.
Should have brought the mini crusher to run through that dirt back here. Oh, you want that dirt back there?
>> That chunk?
I couldn't see it.
>> The sun's in a funky position.
There's shading the hole. Shadows.
good up to there.
>> Okay.
So, by our our pipe being crooked from what we cut, it's actually okay because the property owner wanted the the pipe to hug his more towards his other property line.
If that makes sense.
cuz these link lots aren't very wide when you get out to the water.
So, we wanted it more to one side than it was.
So, we're going to we're going to steer that away as we trench it in.
We found a manhole cover while we were digging. It was buried in here.
Don't know where it came from. It's just a random manhole cover.
Well, it's laying right there along the road right there.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Well, we're just about to the end here.
We are sitting on the beach.
We can officially say we've had micro Richard to the beach.
We're going to run this culbert out a little farther than it was before in this uh Huh.
>> Oh, okay. Well, I'm tipped. Let's see.
How can I Well, I need a tilty bucket.
Hang on. Let me try something.
So anyways, this customer wants to run this pipe out about 10 more feet than what it was when they started because then they're going to redo their seat.
Is that better?
A chunk of something.
rock.
It must be I have just worked around that a little bit.
That got us what we needed.
All right.
So, we did move the pipe over about a foot and a half by the time we got here where it was before. It's not much, but Pulled a wooden post off something right there.
A chunk of Heat. Heat.
Well, yeah, we we went as far as we can go.
That water looks like it gets pretty deep pretty quick. We better uh better turn and get out of here.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
That's a good profile picture or good thumbnail picture right here.
I'm going to go take it real quick.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Well, we Got our pipe laid in. Got it banded together. And uh we're kind of in a hurry to get this patched back up because there is a golf cart poker run going on around the lake tonight. And several people have stopped and wanted to make sure that this was done before the golf cart poker run.
We're not going to the golf cart poker run. We're not We're just not. I got I got things to do tonight. So, I got I got hay to bail. Oh, what is that? What is that?
Oh, I don't know what that is. It's in the limestone, though. Oo, that's pretty.
It's some sort of crystal.
>> Scooter. We going to have this done by the poker run.
Maybe. I want to go tonight.
We got to >> Well, hammer that tight.
There you go.
You got it.
>> There you go. One more stick and I think we'll have it. We might be too short.
Might need to cut one in half. I don't know yet. I'll have to see when we get down here.
>> Going to get a tape measure.
>> Yeah, probably should get a tape measure instead. Just eyeballing it. I like eyeballing it. It's a surprise then when you do use measuring devices.
All right, this is looking really good.
We'll run up and down this with Bobcat and pack it really good once I get it in there.
The landowner Mike is a super nice guy here. You'll see him walking around in the videos.
He wanted to be on YouTube. Well, he got his chance. He's on YouTube.
I should have got an interview with him.
It's really nice when you have a good land owner to work with.
A lot of people just see this as a very invasive pro uh process on their property. Well, it's a necessary evil.
It's got to be done.
It's always good when you find somebody that understands what's going on and enjoys the process.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Definitely a good amount of top soil here.
This pipe is actually very shallow compared to what we normally put in.
Somebody's going to say, "Well, why didn't you put in plastic?" And I've went through this before in videos. By county code, we have to put steel pipe in. Reason we put steel pipe in is if somebody's burning leaves and it gets in the down in the culbert, they act like chimneys and they'll suck that fire right through the plastic and melt them out underground.
So, the county has just implemented that they all be galvanized steel pipe or they can be aluminum, but you don't really see aluminum culverts hardly anymore. All right. Hope you can get one.
So, we got our our length that we wanted out there.
That turned out real nice. They can rebuild their seaw wall. The pipe's not going to hang way out in the edge of the lake to get caught on by tubers and skiers. And well, they shouldn't be that close to the lake in the the side of the lake anyways.
So, if you're wondering about Bass Lake, Bass Lake is about 1,500 acres of water and it is actually kind of on a hill.
It is a natural lake. It's not man-made.
It's been here for years.
My family's got quite a bit of history on it.
My grandparents used to own a couple cottages out here.
It's a pretty nice lake.
We go out on it. We take Zach's pontoon and we all go out on it sometimes.
It's not far from home, so you know, it's what 8 minute drive.
We like to come out here in the summertime on our side by sides and drive around it.
All right, we get this all worked down, packed in. I use my blade for that. Run it over the Bobcat some and pack it down. Call it good. We got some some uh grass seed in the truck. little spread on it and we'll make it for the poker run.
Well, there we go. It's all in, leveled out, reseated.
Turned out really nice. Really nice.
Now, when they reconstruct their seaw wall, they'll be able to run it across there straight and that'll look really pretty when it's done. So, thank you for watching. Greatly appreciate it. We'll see you all in the next one.
